Salary cap squeeze at Tigerland makes it difficult for club to increase two-year offer to Reece Conca Jon Ralph

August 14, 2013 10:00PMRICHMOND will have to increase its two-year offer to Reece Conca if his contract impasse is to be resolved before the finals.
West Australian Conca wants to stay at Richmond but has been offered a deal far inferior to what he could expect on the open market.
He has been described by former Tigers assistant coach David King as Richmond's best midfielder after Trent Cotchin.
The No.6 draft pick set the MCG alight with three goals and 21 disposals against Brisbane last weekend.
Richmond recently offered to lift some restrictive bonus clauses because of Conca's run of good form, but negotiations are stalled.
The Tigers have an extremely tight salary cap and also are hoping to secure Dustin Martin.
They have denied links to a bid for homesick Greater Western Sydney midfielder Taylor Adams, believing their onball brigade is strong enough.
But the salary cap squeeze means Conca, who has played 48 encouraging games in his three years at Richmond, would have to stay for well below market rates.
For his most recent contract, Martin was able to secure a massive deal of about $500,000 a season as the spectre of Greater Western Sydney loomed.
Conca would be in demand at Fremantle and West Coast, has not used that as a negotiating tactic.
He wants to stay at a side that will play finals this year, but not at any cost.
While conjecture around unsigned players is a mild distraction, Trent Cotchin, Jack Riewoldt, Alex Rance, Daniel Grimes, Daniel Jackson are locked in.
President Gary March said last week he was confident the club would re-sign his former house guest Martin.
"We had quite a number of uncontracted players this year and probably we started with the talks with Dustin after we started with Jack, so Jacks talks were further advanced. So there's no hold up. It's just going through the process at the moment."
