Richmond almost ended up moving to Oakleigh
« on: January 03, 2011, 04:44:05 AM »
When Saints president Graham Huggins announced on March 24, 1964, that St Kilda was moving from its traditional home at the Junction Oval to Linton St, Moorabbin, the club became the first in the then-Victorian Football League to jump ship and move to the suburbs in search of a bigger supporter base and increased income.

Richmond moving to Oakleigh had been mentioned in dispatches and Fitzroy had explored the possibility of vacating its Brunswick St home, but St Kilda took the leap of faith in a scheme that involved the Moorabbin council putting up the cash to create a state-of-the-art home for the club.

Do any of the older OERites here (FNM  ;D ) remember us being linked to a move to Oakleigh in the 60s?

Even though I am one of the older OERites and at that time I lived in Oakleigh I was only 4 so sorry I don't recall.

Might ask my dad later in week see if he remembers any of it.

Oakleigh was in our old metro zone so that's probably why it was considered at one time. Tony Jewell plus David and Peter Cloke were recruited from there.

As long as Oakleigh stays Greek it will stay Richmond. Once again the wogs make a great contribution to the great sporting enterprise known as the RFC.
