Where will our improvement come from this year?
« on: January 12, 2011, 07:18:25 PM »
Tony Shaw asked this question to Dwayne Russell on 3aw tonight.

Dwayne's response was...

* 4 to 5 of the younger players are now up to 70 games. He didn't mention names.

* Hardwick is into his second year.

Thoughts?

Vickery, Post, Cotchin, Grigg, Houli and Foley amongst others that could help us climb a few place on the ladder. The imports and the 3rd and 4th year players need to start putting in some good and consistent performances.

A few surprise packets would help. For example:

Contin comes in and makes an impact.
Taylor kicks a bag or two of 3 or 4 goals.
Morton becomes a permanent and important goal-kicking mid.
We find help for Jack, whether it be Post, Vickery or Miller.
One of the ruckmen we have becomes at least a B grader.
And you may not think I care for you
When you know down inside that I really do

I see these players as really important

Cotchin: A full pre season should see him cherry ripe to take the comp by storm.

Edwards: Bit of a surprise but if he can take the next step and become an extra mid it will strengthen us considerably. I think he can.

Morton: Fantastically skilled player. If he can transform his game from specialist forward to midfielder he will make us a better side.

Foley: Goes without saying if this guy is up and about we are a far better outfit.

Houli: Would love to see this guy release Deledio into the midfield from half back. His disposal is fantastic but can he deliver it for a whole season?

Martin: Gotta break through the 2nd year blues. Continue working on his fitness and defensive game and we have a ripper.

Astbury: Big ask for a 2nd year kid to hold down a KPP role. Can he do it? Will make a big difference if he can.

Taylor: Shows oodles of talent. If he can harness it becomes a real weapon up forward and the X Factor we have been missing.

Where do we start  8)

Forward line should be alot better having 3 tall options as opposed to 1 tall option during most of the first 11 Rounds last year. When Griffiths played we suddenly had more structure with 2 talls and Reiwoldt had 1 less tall defender to deal with. Post wasn't ready early last season with his extra bulk but came back alot better later in the season. With Reiwoldt, Griffiths and Post all playing together, the oppositions tall defenders will have alot more to worry about and have much less time to double/triple team Reiwoldt. As for small forwards we have Houli who should be pretty capable on a flank and Taylor who should be more of a regular. I think Morton should play Round 1 at half forward to cover for King who's suspended. I have a fair bit of faith with this forward line in Round 1

HF houli post morton
FF taylor reiwoldt griffiths

We can rotate smaller players into the forward line if it's too tall

The midfield will be better with Cotchin and Martin improving fitness over last year. With the return of Foley and the additon of Grigg we have more fire power than last season. I like this midfield for Round 1

C edwards cotchin conca
FOLL browne martin foley

INT graham grigg gourdis rance
EMER vickery thursfield farmer nason

The defence has alot more height and size about it now with Astbury and Gourdis in the mix. Astbury and Mcguane have bulked up too. I'd like to see Webberley get a run. Here's my defence

HB webberley astbury deledio

Our young players have some confidence now and showed that after a few games when we started to play well about Round 9 last season. They tired out about Round 18, but should be fitter come Round 18 this coming season

I believe we will achieve improvement through three avenues this year -

1. General increase in experience, maturity, confidence and understanding of individual roles and team game plan
2. Trades/Recruits
3. Established Players improvement

1. This year all of our young list are a year older. After a year of working to understand what Dimma's wants them to do they are far more comfortable in what the new coach is directing them to be and far more instinctual in their actions and understanding of how their eam mates will play and react. The base has been established and now the list will build from it. Familarilarity breeds confidence.

2. The recruitment of the established players Houli, Grigg and Miller will give us far more depth and immediate experience into our growing list. Houli and Grigg brings in size, strength and polish around the contest and extra delievery into the F50. Miller will at the very least add experience and competition to the F50. I think Miller could easily be our second tall in week one. The best part about these players is that 2 of the 3 we gained for absolutely nothing!  :cheers

Adding to this is our new draft recruits. Conca and Batchelor look ready to line up excepting injury. A noticable exciting reality coming into this year though is that it finally appears that we have enough depth that we don't have to play these future gems immediately but rather have the luxury of giving them time to get experience at Coburg and earn their place in the 22. I think this speaks volumes of the lists improvement and potential to jump up the ladder this year.

In my opinion I would like to see Conca gain a game around week 6 starting on the bench or substitution place to rotate through the midfield. With an injury such as he has and potential that we all can see, take it easy with this kid.

3. A fit Foley would add to our midfield strength immeasurably as would a fully fit Cotchin. Astbury gaining considerable size to go with his already wise head will make our backline far more secure. Vickery and Post fighting for the 3rd tall forward/2nd ruck can only be good and players such as Contin bursting through the banner after earning his place through sheer hard work also will help lift the list and will highlight the increased competition for spots in the team additionally.

So barring injury to key players, all of this points to a significant improvement in the list imho.

MADTIGER - I agree with most of what you said but I have a few differences to my round one team.

The only problem is miller and contin have to rely on 2 long term injuries before round 1  ;D

Nope as we can have two nominated rookies as we have no veterans

Oh, well I hope we elevate contin and jakobi. Would prefer to get games into post and griffiths than to elevate miller straight away

I don't necessarily agree with playing Miller over Post or Griffiths but I think (especially against the old foe in game one) they may reward Millers exceptional preseason training and additional experience in the first game. I think the club are very protective of Griffiths shoulders and want to ensure wherever possible that he has a long term future at the club which may mean additional time before they bring him back in. Similarly Post, will need to fight for his spot in the team rather than expect it which hasn't been a strong suit of his early on in his career to date.

So, with all these things in mind, rightly or wrongly, Miller may be rewarded with a game in the first round...
