Ive heard of NHL teams doing this but not when they are direct opponents as far as i know.
They will use a team from the other conference.

Any time that we are the innovators and not years behind the times its a good sign.

Again Hardwick leaves no stone unturned in his quest to turn this club into something special. The RFC is DEFINITELY becoming more and more professional, and its great to see. This would normally be thought of by the Collingwoods etc, for once its us.

Said that the Tigers & Hawks were doing match practice together twice a week

They got the dude from the Dawks on who said no they weren't doing match practice against one another but just having the newbies of both clubs doing very basic drills (which all clubs would be teaching the draftees) together

If it helps with and speeds up the development of our young blokes then go for it. At the very least it'll give our boys a guide to how their peers at other clubs are progressing. In the past we've always been critical of how slow the development of our young players has been compared to other clubs. Hopefully these times they are a changing.

Only downside is that the Hawks kids get something out of it too

"Anything we can do as a club to be innovative and take our game to the next level we think is beneficial."

"Obviously myself and 'Clarko' are mates as well and we've talked about it for a number of years about how we think it could work and we gave it a trial."

Asked whether he intends to schedule more joint sessions over the pre-season, Hardwick smiled and replied: "Possibly".

"You need to get those guys up, if you get those guys playing to a higher standard it improves your list overall."

RICHMOND and Hawthorn have joined forces during the pre-season in a bid to jump-start the careers of their younger players.

In an unprecedented move, coaches Damien Hardwick and Alastair Clarkson decided to bring their least experienced players together for a couple of training sessions.

Richmond coach Hardwick said the sessions had been very beneficial in giving his young list a chance to test themselves against another side. 

"We obviously had a couple of scrimmage sessions with our young guys just to see how our set-ups went against theirs," Hardwick said on Thursday.

"Anything we can do as a club to be innovative and take our game to the next level I think is beneficial."

"As a coach you need to get those guys up. If you can get those players playing at a higher standard, it improves your list overall. So we thought it was really beneficial for those guys to test where they are at."

Before he scored the top job at Richmond, Hardwick was an assistant coach under Clarkson at Hawthorn for five years and was a key member of their 2008 premiership.

"Obviously myself and Clarko are mates," Hardwick said.

"We've talked about it for a number of years about how we think it could work and we gave it a trial and it actually worked really really well."

"Sides throughout the world do it and it's something we both looked at and thought it'd be worth having a go."

Given the success of the trial, Hardwick did not rule out the possibility of the two clubs joining forces again in the near future.

Hawthorn and Richmond have enjoyed unprecedented co-operation this summer, conducting several joint training/teaching exercises, primarily involving the younger players from both sides.

That was stepped up a notch at Waverley Park last Friday, with a pair of split-squad  "situational matches” between the two clubs.

The folks on the message boards got a bit excited, with one forum for Hawthorn fans speaking excitedly of a six-goal win for the Hawks including a five-goal haul to Buddy Franklin.

But Hawthorn football manager Mark Evans played it all down when contacted on Friday afternoon. "It wasn't a game, more like a series of situational scrimmages," he said.

"There were more passages of play and a lot more senior guys from both sides taking part, but there was no tackling and no physical contests."

Whatever type of footy the Hawks and the Tigers did play last Friday, it was enough to have a few of those in attendance thinking it was a real game. Perhaps the two clubs have been informed they have to 'play' the Giants over the next three weeks and decided they needed another game under their belt to compensate.
