Shame, New Idea - Shame, Trisha Broadbridge

Some people may not like what I am going to say but I have a strong distaste for crass checkbook journalism and I feel this needs to be said.

I can't belive that New idea is running an interview with Trisha Broadbridge titled "AFL widow's Honeymoon heartbreak". This story comes only a couple of weeks after Troy was found dead. We were all told by the MFC and other spokespeople representing the Broadbridge family that they would like to be "left alone to grieve Troy's passing." Now we know the real reason why they weren't taking to the media....A Bloody exclusivity contract!! 
 These stories usually take a week or two to put together with all the legal and financial matters to sort out which would mean that New Idea must have approached Trisha only a day or two after Troy had been confirmed dead. What's just as bad is that Trisha agreed to it! This is an absolute Dog Act from New Idea although they've done it in the past with people like Stuart Diver after he lost his Wife in the Thredbo tradgedy I am still amazed at how low this so called magazine can go. 
For me Troy's death brought a very real human aspect to this surreal tragedy as I had seen him play and I was deeply saddened by his passing and to see this crap printed only 2 weeks after his passing leaves me utterly disgusted!

They all live in the gutter these publications - i wouldn't bother buying or reading any of them.  Good only if you're whiling your time away waiting for your fish'n'chips order or sitting in a doctor's surgery, but nothing else.  And then i just look at the pics lol.

As for Trisha, maybe if she had only one exclusive interview, she wouldn't be hounded by the rest of them.  Have to give her the benefit of the doubt on the reason why she would agree to something like this.  People deal differently from each other in any situation - although i can't understand how she could so close to the event, even before Troy's body comes home, which is today, i believe.

unfortunately the pay anywhere fbetween 40k to 100k a story and as such would be hard to deny.They would have given her a deadline to respond as they only care about units per edition.

The wife is probably just trying to make ends meet now that her life has been turned around.

I would wait until she showed signs of being  a CONTINUING media whoren before I lay the boots in.

I agree Tiga, I would hate to think I would do the same. I think if you had a tragic story that served as a warning to others, that would be different, this didnt serve any purpose except to make some quick dollars. What ends meet Ox, she was newly married, noone to support but herself. New Idea is not called a trash mag for nothing

A bit callous to play judge and jury on the poor girl, Missy, IMO.
I agree, her actions are strange, but she may have valid reasons.  Prefer to hear her first.

It's quite possible she could have donated the money she earned to tsunami charities - i would applaud her courage then!

I'm not judging her Moi, and I can't even begin to understand what shes been through. If she donates the money to the victims, then she is indeed courageous. I'm looking at it purely through my eyes, I dont think I could bear to face it, especially publicly, for a very long time.
My anger was more directed at the mags that feed off this stuff, because, unfortunately, its" what the public want"

Was watching the 7.30 Report the other night, Missy, and they had the mother who lost her two kids and mother in the SA bushfires.  I was watching her speak quite lucidly and it was as though she was talking about the next door neighbour's kids - very matter of fact.  You would have to wonder how she could come on national TV and talk for about 10 mins about something as horrible as that, but each of us is different.  I couldn't do it - would be a blithering mess.  It's either she's a very strong person, but i'm probably thinking she was still in shock.  I'm predicting Trisha was in a bit of shock, and probably still is.  As Ox says, if she becomes a media whore, criticise her then - or at least wait and see why she did it, if she says.

A very good friend of ours died in a plane crash a year ago and his widow was able to speak to the media at the time and indeed gave a stirring eulogy at the memorial service, whereas I was a blubbering idiot not game to say anything.  She spent the next 6 month agonising over business deals left unfinished and to this day is still agonising over selling the home they built together.  I agree with Ox and think everyone should cut Trisha Broadbridge a break - media and public.

I understand where you are all coming from but just associating with a trashy publication like New Idea that is renowned for massaging the facts in the name of selling more copy makes me sick.
Personally I find it distasteful to have Trisha's story on Troy in a publication where on the following page have some story about Brad and Jen or Wacko Jacko goes for another facelift or Britney seen on another binge drinking jaunt. It just makes me so angry. I probably would have been more understanding if She were to tell her story to a more reputable publication like Time magazine....but they wouldn't be knocking on her door the day after her husband's body was found.
Whether she donates the money or not makes no difference to me. It's all about maintaining respect and dignity for Troy's passing and when you associate your name with the new idea, you lose the lot. He deserved better than that in my opinion. For me there is no price you can put on loss of respect and dignity.

Just out of curiosity, is it a full on "exclusive" interview or is it just big pictures and a couple of quotes that have been quoted elsewhere?

However, the more I think about it, the more I think you are right. What you didn't say is that New Idea articles never run to more than about 400 words. Other than the perfunctory, nothing can be said in such an article.

However, the more I think about it, the more I think you are right. What you didn't say is that New Idea articles never run to more than about 400 words. Other than the perfunctory, nothing can be said in such an article.

Barx, we already have Moi as our offical spell / Grammar check Nazi. We really don't need another. But if you are determined to see it through then post your resume to her as she may require the need for an underling.

On the subject of Troy Broadbridge's funeral, the following was taken from the AFL site:-

"The funeral was attended by numerous football officials, including AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou, and various players and coaches from rival clubs. Among them was Richmond coach Terry Wallace, Tiger Matthew Richardson, Western Bulldogs Chris Grant and Luke Darcy, ex-Demon and current Collingwood player Shane Woewodin, Adelaide's Ben Hart and Hawks Richard Vandenberg and Joel Smith."

Good to see Terry and Richo flying the Richmond flag.

I was visitng my Ma's this evening and she is serial subscriber to New Idea and Womans Day

Anyway she had this weeks New Idea (or should that be No Idea) and I checked out this story - I didn't read it just looked for any footnote about payment etc.

There was one and it said that:

"New Idea had made a donation to Care Australia on behalf of Trisha Broadbridge and readers wished to donate to Care Australia....

Going by this I don't think she was paid directly - she got them to donate to a Tsunami Charity
