They've found some goalposts lol ...Primed for first bounceShepparton News
Friday, 4th March 2011All is in readiness for tonight’s NAB Challenge match at Shepparton’s Deakin Reserve now that Greater Shepparton City Council’s goalpost drama is over.
Richmond and Hawthorn will continue their pre-season preparations ahead of this month’s official round-one start.
Kyabram’s Brett Deledio, Echuca’s Daniel Connors and Mansfield’s Andrew Browne will be in action for the Tigers, while Echuca-raised teenager Jordan Williams will play for the Hawks.
Richmond met St Kilda in a practice match at Deakin Reserve in 2009, while Essendon played an intra-club game at the venue last year.
There was some concern for council officers last week when a factory accident damaged new aluminium goalposts scheduled to arrive in time for tonight’s contest.
The council’s recreation and parks manager Brendan Gosstray yesterday said the goalposts arrived safely this week.
‘‘The last time I checked they were there, so I hope no-one steals them,’’ Gosstray said.
‘‘That got us sweating a bit because timing is everything. We put the footings down months ago, but the goalposts are there now so we’re happy.
‘‘Ticket sales are going very well and have really kicked along, so that’s good to see and the AFL inspected the ground today and gave it the all-clear.’’
Gosstray said council officers were anticipating a crowd of about 6000.
‘‘I reckon we’re still around that mark and would be rapt if it’s higher, but the crowd-pulling power of a Collingwood is worth another 30 or 40 per cent,’’ he said.
‘‘It gives people a chance in their own town to get down and see AFL at a local level and get closer to the players.
‘‘You don’t get that at an AFL match. There will be restrictions (on where the crowd can go) because we’re pretty much controlled by the AFL on access to the arena.’’
Gosstray, a Carlton fan, said players from both teams were making the trip to Shepparton today in separate cars rather than team buses.
Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for concession-card holders.
Children under-15 and AFL, Hawthorn and Richmond members gain free entry.
Tickets are available at the council’s Welsford St building or at Deakin Reserve.
Gates open from 5 pm and the match starts at 7 pm.
ONE FM 98.5 is broadcasting at the game from 6.30 pm.
