-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A KICKING masterclass from South Australian Mitchell Grigg has helped his team to an 18-point win over Western Australia in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

Grigg was precise and penetrating in his delivery and unwavering in his attack on the ball as he accumulated 21 possessions, seven inside 50s and seven tackles.

He stepped up in the absence of highly-rated prospect, Chad Wingard, who did not play due to the after-effects of the concussion he sustained against Vic Metro last Friday.

Although Vic Metro's win in the earlier match made this game a 'dead-rubber', both teams were keen to impress the hoard of AFL coaches and recruiters in attendance.

Earlier, South Australia jumped out of the blocks with four goals to two in the first quarter.

The Sandgropers hit back with four of their own in the second term as they came charging back into contention to trail by just five points at half time.

They were led by Tom Mitchell, who has been signed by Sydney as the son of Barry, who racked up 28 hard-fought possessions.

Dayle Garlett added pace and bounce (20 possessions and seven inside 50s), Stephen Coniglio, who received the Larke Medal as best player in Division One of the championships after the match, gathered 19 possessions in the midfield and Riley Hutchinson provided great run from defence.

For South Australia, Brad McKenzie was damaging and productive in the midfield with 18 disposals and two goals, while Josh Simpson was lively as a small forward with two goals.

The intensity lifted in the third quarter as both teams tried desperately to gain match-changing momentum.

It set up a thrilling final quarter with the teams going goal for goal until a turnover by South Australia in their backline gifted Christopher Yarran an easy goal from the goal square as Western Australia took hold of an eight-point lead.

The Croweaters hit back just minutes later with a goal of their own to cut the margin to two points after forward Sam Mayes was awarded a free kick for holding in the goal-square.

However when the game was there to be won, it was the ever-reliable Grigg who found a way to win the important clearance and deliver the ball to teammate Matthew McDonough, who marked on the 50 metre arc.

McDonough wound up and sank a massive set-shot bomb to deliver the knock-out blow, and in the process snuff out any chance of a Western Australian revival.

When Ben Kennedy added another with a superb snap from the boundary the game was over.

Vic Metro claims U18 title
Wed 06 Jul, 2011

VIC METRO has won the Division One title in the NAB Under-18 AFL Championships after posting a crushing 48-point victory over rivals Vic Country at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

The final-round victory ensured an unblemished campaign for Metro as they stamped themselves as the dominant team of the carnival.

Midfielder Dom Tyson confimed his status as a first-round draft selection with a best-on-ground display, racking up 29 possessions and seven inside 50s.

Tyson demonstrated great endurance, hardness at the ball and an ability to find teammates with pinpoint disposal.

Metro took charge early with goals to Hayden Crozier and Michael Bussey from inside 20 metres, as they worked to free space inside their attacking zone.

Metro spearhead Jonathon Patton, the early tip to go at selection No.1 in the October draft, was wayward in front of goal for much of the game, despite again being a dominant force in the air. He finished the match with 17 possessions, eight marks and kicked 2.3

Teammates Toby Greene (29 possessions and six clearances) and Will Hoskin-Elliott (17 disposals and seven inside 50s) were also prominent.

Michael Talia (22 possesions) and Brandon Ellis (17) were resolute in defence as well as engineering multiple forward forays.

It took Country until the 19th minute mark in the second term to finally break through and kick their first goal through Taylor Adams. .

Metro, who should have led by more than 14 points half-time, reappeared after the long break with renewed confidence and kicked the first goal of the third quarter when Jackson Paine took a tremendous outstretched mark inside 50.

Paine, a 193cm key forward, kicked another just minutes later after a costly Country turnover in their forward half.

When Patton took a mark on the goal-line and curled the ball home from the tightest of angles, Metro well and truly seized control of the match.

They dominated the possession count (301-248) and inside 50 entries (49-27), as they continually rushed the ball forward against a busy Country defence.

For Country, Lachie Whitfield, who isn't eligible to be drafted until 2012, showed experience beyond his years with his 23 possessions, and was near untouchable in an eye-catching performance.

Defender Matthew Buntine (23 disposals) did his best to stop the Metro onslaught while midfielder Nic O'Brien also tried hard.

Vic Metro      2.2    3.8    7.11    9.16 (70)
Vic Country    0.5    1.6    1.6    2.10 (22)

Goals:
Vic Metro: Patton 2, Paine 2, Crozier, Bussey, Greene, Tyson, Curran
Vic Country: Adams, Valentine

Best:
Vic Metro: Tyson, Longer, Greene, Ellis, Wooffindin, Hoskin-Elliott, Newnes, Talia
Vic Country: Buntine, Boseley, Whitfield, O’Brien, Adams, Docherty

TASMANIA has recorded a comfortable 33-point victory over Queensland at Skilled Stadium on Thursday to win back-to-back Division Two titles in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Tasmania leapt out of the blocks and led by 23 points at quarter-time through great link up play and strong running through the middle of the ground.

They were proactive in the way they moved the ball, and they capitalised on their chances when they were there to be taken.

Key midfielder John McKenzie was again prolific in the midfield, winning 24 possessions to go along with his two goals.

Daniel Joseph was composed and skilful with 16 disposals, while Ben Brown was impressive in the ruck with 17 possessions, five clearances and three goals.

By half-time the game looked to be over as Tasmania extended its lead to 30 points with its players running all over the opposition.

They linked up through the middle of the ground, easily accounting for Queensland in handball receives (92-53) as they ran in droves off half-back to offer options further afield.

To Queensland’s credit it fought back to kick three goals in a row early in the third term to close the margin to 10 points.

Jackson Allen was the catalyst in their mini-revival with his piercing kicking skills, while Clay Cameron worked hard to present up forward.

Tasmania steadied with goals to Joseph and Michael Musicka in the third term, before Queensland came again with a goal to Aaron Laskey, who was the northerners' best player with 14 possessions and two goals.

Tasmania kicked five goals in a row in the last quarter, including two to Brown, before Alan Sexton and Allen kicked two to make the margin respectable.

Ultimately, it was the polish of McKenzie and Joseph and the natural ball winning ability of Bradley Cox-Gooyer (18 possesions and five inside 50s), as well as the rebound of Jarrod Hibberd (15 disposals) that carried the Mariners to victory.

Northern Territory: Kunoth 3, Lawler 2, Anderson, Collinson, Lawton, Miles, Neade

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

A late goal to Northern Territory midfielder Jake Neade has hauled his team to a stunning four-point victory in the final game of the NAB Under-18 AFL Championships at Skilled Stadium on Thursday.

Neade received a 50 metre penalty, after being unfairly dealt with behind the play, which brought him to 30 metres out from goal with only a minimal angle facing him.

He cooly slotted his chance, which gave his team their first victory for the championships.

However, the result could have been different had NSW/ACT's Oliver Tweeddale kicked truly with barely a minute left in the game.

Northern Territory led early in the game thanks largely to Neade who used electrifying pace and creativity to cut a swathe through the Rams’ defensive zone.

Neade finished with 25 possessions, eight inside 50s, six clearances in a dominant display.

His teammate, the hard-working Lindsay Lawler, was again reliable with 26 possessions and Braedon McLean showed glimpses of why he is considered a strong draft prospect with 19 disposals.

The Rams were slow to get going in the match, but were eventually able to exploit the Thunder’s lack of height in defence.

A rotation of 207cm Jarrod Witts who took eight marks (six contested), 194cm Tweeddale (five marks) and 196cm Michael Hartley (four marks) proved a handful for the Territory’s backmen.

In particular, Witts, who has been signed by Collingwood as a scholarship holder, dominated in the ruck with his deft tap-work and he was able to push forward to stretch the Territory’s defence.

Despite being outsized in the back half, the Thunder fought valiantly, led by Damien Williams who read the ball well in flight, gathering 20 possessions and 10 marks.

Yet the Rams kept coming and their chances were boosted when forward Ashley Morris kicked a pressure goal on the three quarter time siren to give his side a seven point lead.

The first goal of the final term went to Toshie Kunoth (three goals) who pegged the margin back to a point and then Anderson kicked a splendid running goal to take the margin to four points in favour of the Territory.

Just minutes later, James Breust was in the right place at the right time, in the Rams’ next foray forward, with a crumbed goal to give his side a two point lead.

When Witts took an unbelievable contested mark against three opponents it looked like curtains for the Territory as their lack of height began to take its toll.

But it was Lawler who bullocked his way to a much needed goal that trimmed the margin to two points with six minutes remaining on the clock.

The game deserved a hero and the Territory’s most consistent and dynamic player in the championships, Neade, was there to deliver them their maiden victory of the carnival.

The game were good to watch, especially the WA v SA game which got exiciting, but otherwise it was from showcasing sterling performances with jaw dropping talent. Emma Quayle put it best in that it will be something like 'light-draft' in that there are good players and the recruiters will have to dig deep to find some gems after the first couple of rounds.
