23 June 2011 02:50PM ESTAS Richmond move to secure some of their impressive youngsters, and battle to reduce their massive debt, speculation is growing that they could also be planning to modernise the club’s famous Tiger brand.
Sportsnewsfirst.com.au has discovered trademark applications were made on behalf of the AFL for a new stylised Tiger logo earlier this month.
The restyled Tiger features prominent yellow, black and white stripes, with the roaring head standing outside the shield-shaped background and looking in the opposite direction to the current version.
Speculation has already begun on various internet forums about whether the Tigers could be about to change the current logo, which has been on the famous yellow and black shirt since 1995.
Opinions were decidedly mixed on the new version, with several fans saying the new Tiger appeared ‘softer’ than the current version.
“A tiger is regal, majestic, courageous, fearsome, intelligent, proud, cunning, solitary, calculating,” wrote one poster on Tigers forum ‘one-eyedRichmond.com’.
“This tiger, if it is our new logo, needs a major overhaul. Does not inspire fear at all. Makes me want to get a can of Whiskas and tap a spoon on the lid.”
Some fans were more complimentary however.
“Love it. I can see when the name gets added to it, it will be really exceptional. Strong yet modern. Represents the new Richmond,” another wrote on Big Footy.
“As much as I loved the look of the old logo, it's dated. It represents another era of failure. We are moving forward.”
