Tigers turn ruthless at selection table

    Matt Windley
    From: Herald Sun
    July 02, 2011

RICHMOND captain Chris Newman says there are no free games at Punt Rd any more.

Coach Damien Hardwick was ruthless at the selection table on Thursday night, axing five players for today's game against Carlton at the MCG.

Brad Miller, Luke McGuane, David Gourdis, Reece Conca and Jeromey Webberley all got the chop after the disappointing loss to Melbourne last week.

Will Thursfield, Jayden Post, Ben Griffiths and Brad Helbig have been recalled, while Jake King returns from suspension.

Newman said yesterday the selection statement showed the Tigers mean business for what could be a season-defining clash against the Blues.

"We don't really take this lightly. You've got to earn your spot," Newman said.

"Then there's no doubt that if there are changes made, then the player who comes in deserves a game.

"I don't think we're doing it to keep rotating players through.

"It's probably the circumstances at the moment where those players coming in are just in better form."

Newman said the side could develop and be competitive at the same time. "We are still a very young group, so there probably are still elements of trying to get players to get some games in to them," he said.

Carlton's Jordan Russell said the Blues had been "off 5 to 10 per cent" in their loss to West Coast last week, and could not afford the same laxness today.

"We need to get our press better and our intensity around the ball needs to pick up another couple of notches as well," Russell said yesterday.

Carlton beat Richmond by 20 points in Round 1 and is seven places higher on the ladder (fourth versus 11th).

Wurrtt?

So Helbig deserves a game in front of Tuck and even Nason who were both Coburgs best last week?

And Farmer deserved a game when he was doing nothing at Coburg?

With most of the changes made it looks like Dimma is finally fed up with too many passengers who have too many brainfades and who can't execute under game pressure. Sure it can be argued some of the ins have been brought in sooner than expected but it seems Dimma is looking more to the 2012 and beyond once more.

Look forward to another clean out next year.

Our top 2 picks from this year have fitted into our 22 easily. We picked up Houli for free who has fitted in our best 22, Grigg replaced Collins.. Grigg is in our best 22 Collins was fringe/ best 25. (Although Grigg has lost a bit of form)

So with next year's draft if we can replicate this year and find 4 players to fit into our best 22 again it lessens the number of players being somewhat carried.

Our bottom 5 goes from:
Hislop
Farmer
Browne
McGuane
Miller

to

Browne
Edwards
Grigg
Jackson
White

or whoever, you get the idea.

This is the way it must be from now on, when you put that jumper on boys you had better be ready to give your all or don't bother.
DIMMA - You will be held ACCOUNTABLE...

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

I like that popelord, If we can get into a position where jackson, white etc are our bottom players,  the it will show we are serious about our playing team.

He's kidding himself with those comments. If he believes that crap, he'll end up playing no finals - ever.
MT - I hope that is what Dimma is thinking, I really do
Popey - that is exactly what we should aim for but we need to de- list at leat 12 at the end of the year
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

3 tall forwards Reiwoldt, Vickery, Griffiths is the future
3 tall defenders Rance, Post, Grimes is the future
1 spare tall on the bench Astbury is the future
3 small forwards Morton, King, Nahas is the future
3 small defenders Batchelor, Newman, Houli is the future
1st ruck and 2nd ruck Browne and Post is the future
A midfield of Cotchin, Martin, Foley, Deledio, Conca, Jackson is the future

Thursfield is a handy 3rd tall defender and a good player to come in with injuries to Grimes and Astbury

This weeks young team is the best team we've had in for years. Let them grow together  8)
Apart from Hislop and Grigg, I'm very happy with the other 20 out there today.
Hopefully next week Morton and Conca are back in for Hislop and Grigg.
So often when there is a loose 50-50 ball, Grigg will not go in. He'll jog when he has to sprint
I'm still not sold on Nahas and Jackson either being in the 22 in the future though

We'll need to focus on a small forward, midfielder and ruckman in the draft. I think we'll have to offload Graham in a trade maybe. Focus on Browne, Post, Derickx and Vickery plus a draft
Helbig and McDonald are our hopes for a small forward but we'll need to target a specialist small forward with our first or second pick imo
A solidly built ready made midfielder would be perfect too
We will get all this in the draft later this year and we'll trim the list nicely. 2012 will be the year we rise  8)

If that was truly the case there would have been more than 5 changes based on last weeks effort alone.

Can't agree with the comments by Newman either - a club refuses to play blokes who have been consistent at the next level down for weeks and give games to those who haven't then your cannot say "there are no free games"

A very very poor article by the Club - here's a tip shut up and concentrate on actions on the field

Club is great with the big words and the big phrases but is nowhere when you need them to perform on the field. Theres to much garbage coming out of punt road IMHO.
