Clash of the Sash
richmondfc.com.au
Thu 07 Jul, 2011

Two of the AFL’s greatest rivals will go head to head in the inaugural ‘Clash of the Sash’ between Essendon and Richmond at the MCG this Saturday night.

Little separates these two talented, young, developing teams and the latest installment in this proud rivalry promises to be an exciting encounter.

Both teams have plenty on the line, with just one win each since their last meeting in the 2011 Dreamtime game.

It is the perfect recipe for another modern-day blockbuster between two traditional Victorian rivals in front of a packed house at the MCG.

As part of the celebration for this Saturday night’s Clash of the Sash, supporters of both clubs will be encouraged to wear their preferred sash to the game, with prizes for those who don the famous red or yellow sash.

Essendon and Richmond are two of only three AFL/VFL teams to have worn a traditional across-the-chest sash (the other being South Melbourne in its early years).

The Bombers have worn their sash since 1877 (134-year history,) while the Tigers have had theirs since 1914 (97-year history).

In addition to the fight for the precious four premiership points, the two teams will wage a social media battle with the losing team having to change their Facebook and Twitter avatar to the winning team’s logo for two days.

The last time these two teams met, Richmond triumphed in front of nearly 84,000 fans, in the annual Dreamtime at the ‘G blockbuster.

Can the Bombers square the ledger in 2011, or will the Tiger roar prevail again?

Put on your battle armour and join the fight at this Saturday night’s Clash of the Sash.

If there's any positive omen, the Bombers have lost their past 9 games at the 'G. They do play better on the smaller ground at Etihad.

VERDICT

Essendon faces a huge task to replicate some of the manic intensity of its upset win away from its home ground. The Bombers have not won at the MCG in nine attempts, stretching back to their win over the Tigers in round nine, 2010. With a diminished midfield (that was already light-on for class) Essendon faces a challenge against the likes of Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin, Brett Deledio and Nathan Foley. If their heroes from last week can repeat their competitive efforts in the clinches, the Bombers should win, for they have the more capable big men, and fewer battlers on the fringes. However, punters are advised to forget last week's results, refer back to the round nine results and have a second look at the match-ups. A week can be a long time in football.

Coach confident of better Tigers showing
The Age
July 8, 2011 - 11:34AM

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick is confident his players won't be scarred by their massive AFL loss to Carlton last weekend and are ready to bounce back to their best against Essendon on Saturday night.

Hardwick was true to his word following the 103-point defeat, binning the post-match review with his team as promised and encouraging all at the club to put it out of their minds.

He believes his players are ready to respond, describing the mood at training this week as upbeat ahead of Saturday night's MCG clash.

"The one thing I would say about our group is they're very vibrant," Hardwick said.

"You wouldn't know we've come off a resounding loss, and that's something we try to pride ourselves on.

"We try to take away the emotion of the ups and downs of our season.

"We understand where we're at, but we certainly know where we're going. There's going to be bumps along the way, and last week was one of those."

The Tigers have lost ruckman Andrew Browne with a hip injury, with Tyrone Vickery to shoulder the ruck load and key position duo Ben Griffiths and Jayden Post to pinch-hit.

AS HE predicted immediately after his side was mauled by Carlton, Richmond coach Damien Hardwick didn't instigate a full review of the 103-point massacre this week.

The coaches watched the game a few times to find out exactly what went wrong, and to adjust training this week to address those deficiencies.

But the players avoided watching the footage of the ugly defeat, and were instead shown their round-nine 16-point triumph over this week's opponents Essendon as motivation.

"From a coaching perspective, we didn't think there was a great deal we could actually gain from showing the players such a poor performance [against Carlton]," Hardwick said on Friday.

"We played some good football [against the Bombers] that night. It was a good, tough game of footy and that's something we're looking forward to this weekend.

"It's something we probably fell away from last week. We showed the vision of that game and it was very much a finals-type game.

"The body clashes were high and hard, and that's something we look to get back this weekend."

Hardwick said his players' attitude this week had been impressive in the wake of the heavy defeat, and they had responded well to an increase in tough training.

"The one thing I'll say about our group is they're very vibrant. You wouldn't know that we've come off a resounding loss, and that's something we try to pride ourselves on," he said.

"We try to take away the emotion of the ups and downs of the season, which our guys tend to do very, very well.

"In saying that, we've worked on a couple of areas that require a great deal of physicality in our training, and that's something the players have enjoyed this week and will come out versus the Bombers."

Hardwick said this Saturday night's clash at the MCG wasn't primarily about winning back respect, as he believed the club was still in a better place than it was at the start of 2010.

"You've got to remember we're 18 months into a process that we always said was going to take some time," he said.

"You look at where we've come from in the situation at the start of last year where we were a 0-9 start to where we are now - we're a much better side.

"We understand where we're at, but we certainly know where we're going and we've got a hell of a long way to go.

"There's going to be bumps along the way. Last week was one of those bumps, and there's going to more bumps in the future."

Hardwick said the Tigers took heart from the fact the Bombers were able to rebound from a 65-point loss to Hawthorn in round 14 - their fifth in a row - to beat ladder-leaders Geelong by four points last Saturday night.

The Tigers have lost big man Andrew Browne to a hip injury, which leaves them light on for ruckmen against Essendon's dangerous pair of David Hille and Paddy Ryder.

Hardwick didn't rule out bringing in emergency Angus Graham - who hasn't played seniors since round eight - as a late inclusion.

"We’ve got Jayden Post, Ben Griffiths … both are close to 200cm as well as Tyrone Vickery, who can ruck at stages also," he said.

"We'll throw up a few curve balls there and see how it pans out.

"[Graham] is a possibility but we'll see how it turns out."

Richmond players watch replay of win against Essendon

    Michael Horan
    From: Herald Sun
    July 08, 2011 12:43PM

THE Richmond match committee went to the archives this week to quickly remind the players what is required to beat Essendon at the MCG on Saturday night.

So bad was the Tigers' performance in their 103-point humiliation by Carlton last week, that the coaching staff spared the players looking at it again in the weekly review.

''We actually didn't even review it with the players,'' Hardwick admitted today.

''It was very much unlike us for the whole year, so as coaches we sat down and watched it a couple of times to figure out exactly what went wrong.

''From a playing point of view there were a couple of things you could have taken out of it. The one thing about AFL footy is you learn a lesson from every game you play and we probably learned a couple of home truths and we hope to rectify those over the course of the next eight weeks of this season.''

Instead, the playing group was showed the highlights of Richmond's 16-point win over the Bombers in the Dreamtime at the G clash in front of 83,563 fans in Round 9.

''We played some good football that night. It was a good, tough game of football and its something we're looking forward to this weekend,'' Hardwick said.

''It's something we fell away from last week. We showed (the players) the vision of that game, It was very much a finals-type game. The body clashes were high and hard and that's something we're looking to get back to.''

The Tiger coach has put last week's shocker in the out-of-character basket and is eager to move forward positively.

"Our performances up to that stage were a lot more credible than what we showed last week. From a coaching perspective, we didn't think there was a great deal that could be gained from showing the players after such a poor performance,'' he said.

''We went though a few thing we need to improve that have probably been showing their heads over the last two to three weeks anyway, then we put them bed and moved on, just trained them this week and hopefully they come out this week against the Bombers."

Last weekend's comparative efforts couldn't be in greater contrast - the Tigers' humiliation by the Blues and Essendon heroically ending a five-game losing streak by toppling the previously unbeaten Geelong. But Hardwick said the gap between the sides was nowhere near that wide.

"Essendon was probably in our same situation two weeks ago, weren't they?'', he said.

Good ol' Rohan on 3aw - "It's these games Essendon should win". Yeah right Rohan that's why the Bombers have done nothing for 10 years because they are that good :wallywink.
