The Coburg Tigers came back from 19 points down at the final change to upset the Northern Bullants by six points at Preston City Oval yesterday.

Sam Power was prolific with 33 disposals and two goals. His long goal with the breeze in the final term put the Tigers in the lead. While the Bullants challenged again, Ben Nason finished off the home team with another to lead the charge for its best victory of the season.

Coburg coach Adam Potter was thrilled with the win that showcased the players' self-belief following a 92-point drubbing to North Ballarat last week. ''We just kept fighting and scrapping away and we had a really good third quarter against the breeze. It was lucky that we kicked four goals in the last quarter to win the game,'' Potter said.

It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

Coburg storms home for upset win

Sun 31 Jul, 2011

Coburg has continued its giant-killing season, upsetting the Northern Bullants at Preston City Oval.

The Tigers collected their fourth win of the 2011 season, the third against top-eight opposition, by six points.

It was also the third win in the last six matches for Richmond’s VFL affiliate.

“It’s great to have a win like that today.  I couldn’t be happier with the group,” Coburg coach Adam Potter said.

“We had a really poor week last week against North Ballarat, and we addressed it during the week.  The great thing about footy is that seven days later you get another opportunity to come up against a top-four side.

“It’s a good alignment because the Richmond boys came to training on Wednesday, and they were there Friday, which allows us to train together, which is really important.”

Coburg was on the back foot early, trailing by 33 points at quarter time after the Bullants made the most of the breezy conditions.

From there the Tigers kicked 11 goals to four, hitting the front midway through the last quarter, before Ben Nason sealed the victory with a goal in the final minutes.

The win was set up by a dominant performance from the Coburg midfield, including a two goal, 28-possession game by Sam Power, and 22 touches to Jeromey Webberley.

Andrew Browne was impressive in the ruck with 19 disposals and eight marks, while Jayden Post (22 possessions and eight marks) and Mitch Farmer (18 possessions) held the defence together.

Ist Quarter terrible over handpassing only person kicking it was Webberley. Good win but only Post of the listed players showed anything. Hicks has great speed but is too lightly framed and can't kick long. Webberley although tries hard is not up to Afl standards. Hislop Browne Farmer are just not up to it. Nason was okay but needs to show more

Tigers Stage Comeback Victory
VFL website
August 1, 2011

In a remarkable turn of events, Coburg Tigers came to life in the second half of football on Saturday afternoon to snatch a two-point win following a goal less opening term as Brittany Shanahan reports.

If you had to put your house on a winner at Preston City Oval; no doubt you wouldn’t have looked any further than the Northern Bullants, who were holding onto fourth spot. Think again.

The Bullants held Coburg goal less in the first quarter as Nick Meese was effective off half back, intercepting entries inside 50, while up the other end, Setanta O’hAlipin worked tirelessly to present and provide a dangerous target up forward.

Coburg was running into trouble, rather than out. Over handballing, chip kicks and lowered vision hurt the side. It looked like a potential smacking and the only fight that Coburg would put up is the one going into the quarter time huddles.

Yet out of nowhere, momentum shifted and Coburg was taking the game on as instructed by their coach Adam Potter.

In the last quarter, the Bullants didn’t look like a top four side; constantly chasing the tails of their Coburg counterparts and the frustration was clearly showing.

Coburg kicked four goals in the last quarter and returned the favor to the Bullants as they could only register two points.

Tiger Jayden Post was pivotal for Coburg in defence, halting a resurgent Bullants line-up to score and swing momentum in their favor.

No-one could wipe the smile off Potter’s face after the match as he embraced the players, congratulated them and reflected on the final moments of the game.

“It was a good feeling (when Ben Nason kicked the winning goal) but I still thought there was 5 or 6 minutes to go in the quarter,” he said.

“I didn’t get caught up in it. When the siren went it was a bit of shock, relief, excitement and all those things put together.”

Despite not kicking off the game on the right note, Potter believed his players were able to get over the line if they all put the effort in.

“It was a poor start but at the same time there was signs that our work rate was there where it wasn’t existent last week,” he said.

“I thought our third quarter was the real critical quarter, we outscored them by one point and we had more of the ball and we closed down their contested marks.”

Potter praised the efforts of Sam Power (33 possessions, two goals) and Tom Hislop (24 possession, one goal) but was impressed with Ben Clifton’s tagging role on Carlton young gun, Ed Curnow.

“Curnow was getting pretty frustrated and trying to shake the tag by going forward and going off but I thought Benny was pretty disciplined with Ed Curnow,” he said.

This week Coburg host Box Hill Hawks and will hope to get a second consecutive win. Creating a successful culture is what the club is aiming for and Potter is hoping the young batch of players coming through will remain for the long haul.

“We are starting to get a core group of players together and hopefully we will be around for a few more years to come.”

The Blues are having a sook about the game as well....

CARLTON was left fuming with the tagging tactics applied to out-of-form midfielder Ed Curnow in the VFL on Saturday.

Blues development coach Darren Harris said he was "pretty frustrated" at the constant niggling of the rookie revelation and a lack of support from the umpires.

"He got tagged really heavily, and we were pretty frustrated with the way he was treated," Harris, who also coaches Northern Bullants, said.

"The umpires have the duty to control a lot of that and I don't think they were aware of it as much as we were. I think those days (of illegal tagging) are just about gone."

Curnow was restricted to 16 touches, but he laid five tackles as Coburg stunned the Bullants by six points.

A handful of Coburg midfielders rotated through Curnow, including Richmond's Tom Hislop.

I was walking up Church St. Richmond shortly after the game when I spotted a bloke in a Blues beanie.
As I passed him, I said, "Coburg beat the Bullants today, yyyeeesss". I couldn't help myself ;D
