06 Aug, 2011 AFL player Jake King is being investigated by police for allegedly threatening to kill a Melbourne man and his family.
Police applied to the Bendigo Magistrates Court this week for an interim intervention order against the Richmond Football Club player after the alleged victim raised safety concerns.
Senior Constable Tim Elliot told the court a report had been made to police regarding the alleged threats and the matter would be investigated.
Any person charged and found guilty of making a threat to kill could face a maximum 10 years in jail.
King and the alleged victim were not present at the Bendigo hearing.
The matter was adjourned to Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on August 24.
King must appear in court on that date to contest any intervention order.
The Bendigo Advertiser believes King has not yet been served with the interim order.
He yesterday travelled to Perth with the Richmond Football Club for tomorrow’s clash with the West Coast Eagles at Patersons Stadium.
A club spokesman said Richmond was not aware of the court case and would not comment.
King, 27, made his AFL debut with the Tigers in 2007 after being selected at No.24 in that year’s rookie draft.
He has since gained prominence in a defensive-forward role and enjoyed his best season of league football in 2010, finishing ninth in the club’s best and fairest award.
King has played 71 games with the Tigers.
