---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE TIGERS challenged but could not hold West Coast for the entire game, eventually going down by 57 points at Patersons Stadium on Sunday.

But the Eagles took their time to completely shake Richmond, who fought back from a 45-point deficit in the third quarter to draw within 27 points early in the final term.

But the visitors' ascendency was short-lived, with West Coast kicking five of the last six goals of the game to win 22.15 (147) to 14.6 (90).

It was a significant day for West Coast which was celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The form of ruckman Nic Naitanui and midfielder Daniel Kerr, both returning from lay-offs, would also be a reason for the club to celebrate.

Kerr, who had missed three games with soreness resulting from his hamstring surgery last year, had 34 possessions—including 19 in a brilliant first half to help set up a 34-point lead.

Naitanui was also instrumental in setting up what was effectively the match-winning lead, kicking two goals on the verge of the main break to cap a half full of individual highlights.

Forward Mark Nicoski provided the icing on the cake, booting a career-best six goals to make up for the absence of injured spearhead Josh Kennedy.

The Tigers, who have now lost eight of their past nine matches, folded in the last quarter after entering the final break with a glimmer of hope. They haven't won since round 13 against the Brisbane Lions.

Jack Riewoldt was well-beaten by West Coast skipper Darren Glass in the first half, but he ignited his side late in the third quarter with two quick goals and finished with four for the day.

Brett Deledio (31 possessions and a goal), Dustin Martin (23 and nine clearances) and Shane Tuck (29 and six) were the team's most prolific midfielders.

THE NEXT FOUR
Richmond: The Tigers next four could bring about some wins to give them a better win-loss record than 2010. It begins next Sunday against Sydney (MCG), followed by Melbourne (MCG), Adelaide (AAMI) and North Melbourne (Etihad).

DREAM TEAM HIGHLIGHTS
Richmond: Brett Deledio ($341,400) showed the way in Dream Team scorers for the Tigers with 115 points. Jack Riewoldt ($252,800) had 94 and Shane Tuck ($283,600) 92.

QUARTER BY QUARTER
First quarter

Things began ominously for Richmond when West Coast got the game's opening goal within a minute through Jack Darling, but two to Brad Miller and one to Mitch Morton ensured the Tigers stayed in touch.
Even though the Eagles did sneak out by 14 points, a quick snap by Tyrone Vickery had the Tigers with seven at the first change.

West Coast by seven points.

Second quarter
West Coast threatened to blow Richmond away in the second term with Nic Naitanui coming to life, kicking two goals from eight possessions and taking four marks.

West Coast by 34 points.

Third quarter
The game seemed destined for a rout, especially when Ebert and Nicoski continued their big days and had eight goals between them.

On three separate occasions, West Coast led by 45 points but Richmond would not go away and, with Jack Riewoldt making up for a quiet first half (he had three for the term, including one after the three quarter-time siren), the Tigers were still a chance.

West Coast by 27 points.wn at the last change.

Fourth quarter
The first goal of the last term was always going to be crucial and it came to West Coast courtesy of Shannon Hurn at the eight-minute mark to put the home side back on top by 36 points.

Nicoski then booted his fifth for the first time in his career for the Eagles, Mark LeCras added his first soon after and then Nicoski booted his sixth to kick the 25th year celebrations into overdrive.

Richmond exposed as Naitanui leads West Coast to easy win

    Braden Quartermaine
    From: Herald Sun
    August 07, 2011 9:54PM

WEST Coast was too quick, too big, too good. And very, very exciting. The Eagles showed it all off in one passage of play in the second quarter.

With midfielder Luke Shuey seemingly cornered by Tiger Mitch Morton in the middle of the ground, he burned him off with pure speed.

As Shuey charged to the 50m arc, his eyes lit up at the target on offer - Nic Naitanui, who was enjoying one of the best quarters of his short career.

Naitanui outmarked helpless Richmond defender Alex Rance, played on and kicked the goal.

The devastating play by the two 21-year-olds broke the Tigers' spirit and won't have gone unnoticed by a few other clubs either as West Coast continues to loom as the September X-factor.

They may also note that this was an Eagles side that kicked 22 goals without spearhead Josh Kennedy and with limited input from their second-highest goalkicker, Mark LeCras.

West Coast had Richmond at arm's length all day in the 57-point victory, and the Tigers have now tumbled to 14th after their sixth consecutive loss.

A season that held so much promise two months ago has quickly gone sour, with usual suspects Dustin Martin (23 touches and nine clearances) and Brett Deledio (31 possessions and one goal) the best of too few good performers.

Remodelled forwards Mark Nicoski and Brad Ebert were two of the Eagles' most-maligned players coming into the season.

They kicked 10 goals between them last night, with Nicoski finishing with a career-best bag of six.

Daniel Kerr was also outstanding in his return from injury, gathering 34 touches and eight clearances as he dominated at the stoppages.

But there was only one player people were talking about as they left the stadium.

There was little Naitanui did not do in a breathtaking second quarter as the dreadlocked youngster teamed with Kerr, who had 13 touches for the term, to blow the match apart.

Naitanui set up an 8-1 centre clearance advantage for the quarter with masterful tap work, took towering one-handed marks around the ground and went forward and kicked two goals.

The Eagles' ruck brigade has such an embarrassment of riches that Dean Cox, favourite for the All-Australian ruck spot, started in the forward line each quarter.

West Coast also had too much to play for, with an on-ground celebration already planned after the game to mark the club's 25th anniversary, and a top-four spot on offer.

The Tigers briefly led midway through the opening quarter after two early goals from Brad Miller, but the scoreboard contradicted a strong feeling the Coasters were a class above.

The Eagles powered to a 34-point lead at halftime and held a 45-point advantage at the 30-minute mark of the third quarter before the Tigers kicked three late goals to close the margin to 27 points at the final change.

Jack Riewoldt kicked three goals for the quarter, after being blanketed by Darren Glass in the first half, but any hope of a Richmond comeback was extinguished early in the final term.

Four Talking Points

1.)  100-gamer Daniel Jackson was left sore and sorry last night after having his milestone game curtailed by a hip injury.

Jackson battled on after being hurt in an awkward first-quarter collision with Shannon Hurn, but limped off again in the third term and was substituted out of the game.

2.)  Yesterday's match celebrated West Coast's 25th anniversary, with the WA club's first home and away match being against Richmond at Subiaco in 1987.

The Eagles trailed by 33 points at three-quarter time on that day before winning by 14 points.

The margin was again 33 points on the three-quarter-time siren yesterday, before Jack Riewoldt closed the gap to 27 with a goal after the siren.

3.)  Riewoldt booted ten goals the last time the teams met in Round 12 last season as he monstered young pair Eric Mackenzie and Will Schofield.

He found the going tougher yesterday against All-Australian contender Darren Glass, being thrashed by Glass in the first half before sparking the Tigers with three goals in the third quarter.

4.)  The Eagles have had some fair players in their 25 years, as evidenced by the club's inaugural Hall of Fame inductions on Friday night.

But none have created more excitement than Nic Naitanui, whose aura now equals that surrounding a young Chris Judd.

The third-year ruckman again left an adoring crowd spellbound with some magic moments yesterday.

We did try. The effort was there. Sadly the part of the article that says "West Coast was too quick, too big, too good" is spot on. Especially the "too big" part. We just have too many small and light-weight players that can be pushed aside and restrict our longer options for the ballcarrier.

Eagles prove too classy for Tigers
Simon White
August 8, 2011

TO GET an idea of how the fortunes of West Coast and Richmond have differed in the past year, you need only look at Jack Riewoldt's shot at goal during the third quarter of the Eagles' 57-point win at Patersons Stadium yesterday..

Last season, in round 12 at the MCG, the Coleman medallist kicked 10 goals as a seemingly improving Tigers side gave eventual wooden spooner West Coast a thumping. Yesterday, Riewoldt was starved of opportunities and often beaten by Eagles skipper Darren Glass when half-chances did fall his way.
Advertisement: Story continues below

Midway through the third quarter, Riewoldt went back from 40 metres on a 45-degree angle and, with a shot he might have converted in his half-sleep in 2010, kicked not only well wide but also about five metres short.

To his credit, Riewoldt bounced back to finish with four goals, including the one that put the Tigers within 26 points at the final change.

But the damage had already been done as a rampant Daniel Kerr inspired the Eagles to build a match-winning lead on a day that celebrated the first clash between the two sides in round one of 1987.

Kerr was simply brilliant yesterday.

He had 13 possessions in the second quarter, 10 in the third and 34 for the match. His work in and around the stoppages was sublime.

In Dustin Martin (23 disposals), Richmond has its own clearance machine. But one of the key differences between the two sides was that Kerr had hard-running youngsters Andrew Gaff and Luke Shuey as targets for his 25 handballs.

The Eagles also had Nic Naitanui, who again showed why he is the most raw excitement machine in the competition.

If Richmond had come back to steal victory yesterday - the resistance was effectively snuffed out when Shannon Hurn kicked the first goal of the last quarter - then the Eagles would have wasted a brilliant second quarter from Naitanui.

The 21-year-old ruckman had eight possessions and two goals for the term and thrilled the crowd by taking a towering pack mark on one half-forward flank and then ghosting across the front of the pack to take a spectacular one-hander on the other side of the ground.

Richmond fans had rather less to get excited about, particularly after the reliable Daniel Jackson was substituted out of the game during the third quarter with a hip injury.

Martin never stopped trying and has obvious class. Shane Tuck (29 possessions) was customarily honest and possibly Richmond's best and Bachar Houli and Nathan Foley worked hard throughout.

Brett Deledio (31 possession) saw plenty of the ball as usual and kicked a spectacular goal in the third quarter.

The Tigers were actually very competitive early and, with Brad Miller lively, kicked three of the first five goals.

But there clearly isn't enough depth yet on the Richmond list for the Tigers to challenge the league's best teams - a fact borne out when you look at the scoresheet.

In the absence of spearhead Josh Kennedy, the Eagles got six goals from crumbing forward Mark Nicoski and four apiece from Brad Ebert and Jack Darling.

DOWN BUT NOT QUITE OUT

There were a few nervous faces around Patersons Stadium when Richmond held the lead midway through yesterday's first quarter - not least because star Eagles ruckman Dean Cox had disappeared back into the rooms. Cox, who had made a brilliant start to the game, spent 10 minutes off the ground with what was speculated to be either a rib or elbow problem. He returned to the ground but didn't quite seem his usual self.

THAT'S SOME SNAP

It's hard enough to snap a goal across your body from 40 metres so Brett Deledio's third-quarter major was truly something special. Deledio was outside the 50-metre arc when he hoofed it through and the ball carried the line by 10 metres. A rare highlight for Tigers fans.

BEST
West Coast: Kerr, Shuey, Gaff, Naitanui, Nicoski.
Richmond: Tuck, Martin, Foley, Houli, Deledio.

Hardwick questions umps
7/8/2011 9:29 PM
Paul Barbieri
Sportal

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has taken a swipe at the umpires for a particularly lop-sided free-kick count in his side's 57-point loss to West Coast on Sunday.

Hardwick entered his post-match press conference complaining to another official about the 30-14 free-kick count in West Coast's favour and his mood hadn't particularly improved when asked specifically about it.

"I can't comment on the umps mate," Hardwick initially said, before doing exactly that.

"What was it, 30 to 14? I think they had nine shots on goal from free kicks, there's no doubt some of them were there, we've just got to get better in some of those situations."

"It's amazing, that. You've got to give credit to the West Coast crowd though - they make a big noise at certain stages of the game and there's no doubt the influence they have over the people out there. I suppose it's significant."

"So we've just got to make sure we get our Tiger home crowd to do the same thing next week against Sydney."

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick is urging all Tiger fans to turn up to the MCG in the next two weeks, believing a parochial and vocal home crowd helped West Coast easily win the free-kick count on Sunday.

West Coast was on the receiving end of the majority of the free kicks and, while Hardwick wouldn’t be drawn on some of the contentious decisions, he had no doubt the home crowd had a big impact.

"It was 30 to 14 [the free kicks] and I think they had nine shots on goal from free kicks," Hardwick said after the game.

"There's no doubt that some of them are there and we just have to get better in some of those situations. [But] you have to give credit to the West Coast crowd.

"They make a big noise at certain stages of the game and there's no doubt of the influence that they have over the people out there. I suppose it's significant."

Richmond plays the Sydney Swans and Melbourne at the MCG in the next two weeks and Hardwick said he hoped the fans turned up.

"We just have to make sure that we get our Tiger home crowd to do the same thing next week versus Sydney," he said.

Despite the 57-point margin, Richmond put in a largely competitive effort that was a marked improvement on recent losses to Melbourne, Carlton, Essendon, Gold Coast and Geelong.

Hardwick said he was pleased to see his players show some fight throughout the game.

Brett Deledio led the way across half-back and Will Thursfield kept the dangerous Mark LeCras quiet. Shaun Grigg was also mentioned by the coach for shutting down Matt Priddis in the final three quarters.

"I thought that we competed pretty well to get ourselves back in the game at three quarter-time, but it was just unfortunate that we couldn’t sustain it in the last quarter. That's why West Coast are a top-four or five side and we are where we are," he said.

"We might have broken even in stoppages or just gone down (West Coast had 44 to Richmond's 36), but their effectiveness from stoppages was probably the telling stat especially in the first and third quarters.

"We just have to get better at those areas. Shaun Grigg went onto Priddis after quarter-time and kept him to nine possessions for the rest of the game so that was a reasonable result for us as well."

Riewoldt was well beaten by West Coast captain Darren Glass in the first half, but bounced back with four goals in the second half and Hardwick was pleased to see him show that fight.

"Darren Glass is an outstanding player and Jack finished with four and should have finished with five or six. I was happy for him. His game versus Geelong was a big step forward and this week was another step forward," Hardwick said.

"You've got to remember that guy is an All Australian full-back and could quite easily be in contention for that award this year. To kick four on him is a reasonable achievement."

Poor old Gus lol. 8 disposals and all of them clangers :P.

surely not. dont frees against count as clangers?? His disposal efficiency isn't zero, so every touch being a clanger couldn't be right.
