I would have thought based on free agency qualifications that he was quite young and therefore that should weigh in our favour when allocating a compo pick.

THE AFLPA will probably never let it happen but there's a pretty simple & obvious way for the AFL to ensure a fairer system and more equalisation - take the players' total contracts and average them out regardless of front loading or back ending when calculating club's annual tpp .. :shh

Why Tigers received pick 39 for Ellis

Jon Ralph
Herald-Sun
7 October 2019

Richmond was told a rapid escalation in the kind of lucrative contracts above $500,000 for players over 25 saw them miss out on end-of-first-round compensation for Brandon Ellis.

The Tigers were so upset to receive only pick 39 as compensation for the departing Ellis that they clarified the free agency situation with the AFL.

The league does not disclose exactly how it comes up with free agency compensation, but a player has to fit into the top few per cent of players over 25 on pay alone to secure first-round compensation.

End-of-first-round compensation is the second band, with second-round compensation the third band.

The Tigers were told since West Coast received end-of-first-round compensation for Scott Lycett and Geelong for Steve Motlop, players in that pay scale had increased.

Both those players were offered less guaranteed money than Ellis, but the Tigers received less compensation. But while Richmond lost Ellis to a five-year deal worth $3 million, he isn’t in the top handful of paid players over 25.

The league’s wages continue to grow, with free agency and long-term deals meaning clubs are now paying more for elite players and having to squeeze many on their list into the remaining cap space left over.

AFL's response:

"Well, if you ask us for a straight answer, then we shall say that, as far as we can see, looking at it by and large, taking one thing with another in terms of the average of departments, then in the final analysis it is probably true to say, that at the end of the day, in general terms, you would probably find that, not to put too fine a point on it, there probably wasn't very much in it one way or the other. As far as one can see, at this stage."

More likely to do with the sudden explosion of cups heading to Punt Rd. I bet if we were a bottom club we'd be getting an end of first round pick at least. The AFL making things up as they go along ::).

So Tomlinson is equal value to Ellis according to the AFL. I'd doubt Melbourne has given Tomlinson anywhere near $3m over 5 years  ::).

Ellis' career so far has been superior to Tomlinson's too.

We need to either challenge it or move on, I can’t see the AFL admitting they are wrong
The AFL is alway going to discriminate based on their affiliations
