Rate our preseason: pros and cons?
« on: March 18, 2012, 02:14:23 PM »
As the title says - how did you rate our preseason all up?

Pros - including what/who surprised or impressed you so far?

Cons - not the usual such and such is still a dud  ;D but things that we still need to improve?

Pros: Post has shown improvement. Maric will help ease our ruck defeciency. No injuries. Martin has been most impressive for mine yet Ellis has impressed me no end also!
Cons: Skills still need improvement. I know our kicking in general has improved but we turn it over in crucial areas of the ground. Maybe playing GWS in the last round may mask that there is still work to do before round 1 and not to get too cocky.

Pros:

Players:
* Mini Maric a very positive surprise
* Post holding down CHB but he really needs to get some more aggro in his game
* Foley's form

Looking solely at the game style: the biggest positive is our increased defensive pressure across the ground

Cons: some blokes still make shocking decisions when under pressure whether that be actual pressure or "preceived" pressure.

Maric, maric, Ellis, post, foley and miller

Our structures look sounder, there is a lot less deer in headlights moments but it is only nob cup so under sustained pressure who knows...

We collectively look a bigger unit

Bit of worry that we've had a couple of soft hit outs, Geelong had players coming in for their first run of the preseason and gws are noobs

One percenters have increased dramatically.
Tackles, shepherds, smothers, pressure, mongrel.
Defensive structures seem to have improved and so has our disposal.
Hopefully our mental toughness has too but that will be evident in the cauldron of the home and away season.
Forward line is reasonable to good, midfield could be anything our defensive structure is critical to us moving up the ladder and it seems they have emphasised this in the off season which to me is a big tick for the coaching staff and the recruiters finding players who have seemed to addressed these needs.

Oops also forgot we got a ruckman on the cheap who is very competitive and has improved our midfield also.
Kudos.

This is the first preseason since I joined OER that I haven't heard the terms "Chicken little / The sky is falling".
