Hardwick stunned by slump
By Harry Thring
6:45 PM Sat 30 Jun, 2012

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick was lost for words after his side's 52-point fade out against Adelaide on Saturday, after they rocketed out of the blocks in the first term.

The Tigers looked hot early in soggy conditions, smashing the hapless Crows in every key performance indicator, only to watch the home side turn a 33-point deficit at quarter-time into a 19-point victory.

Richmond's quarter-time lead was the result of 39 more possessions, nine more marks, nine more tackles and seven more inside 50s. Yet after the main break the Tigers could only manage three goals to Adelaide's nine and recorded 19 fewer contested possessions.

"To lose the way we did towards the end of the game was really disappointing, we just couldn't win the contests," Hardwick said.

"[There's] not a great deal to say to be honest."

Hardwick said the contest tightened up after quarter time, admitting the Crows were simply harder at the football.

But he conceded the Tigers were left to rue missed opportunities.

"At the end of the day we had more scoring shots than Adelaide," he said.

"We've just got to make sure that when we do have a chance to convert, we convert. We had more inside 50s, more forward-half turnovers; we had a lot of stats going our way.

"In the last quarter there were a number of one-on-one contests in which Adelaide were just harder than us."

While there "wasn't much to say" about the Tigers' drop-off in the second half, Hardwick was just as speechless when asked about Taylor Walker's sling tackle on Steven Morris.

Morris was tackled by Walker deep in Adelaide's attack and clearly dumped into the ground on his head.

But rather than report Walker, the umpire penalised Morris for holding the ball.

Understandably cautious about voicing any criticisms of the umpire's decision, Hardwick took a leaf out of Ronan Keating's book and said all he had to without really saying much at all.

"I can't comment on that …I think we both know the answer to that one," he said when asked of the incident.

Starting to sound like a broken record. He has not taken any personal accountability for any loss thus far.

I wonder if he and the MC actually realize that the questionable players they continue to play each week, consistently let us down in key moments of games.... Dea tries and may be good in a year or 2 but right now he is a liability, Miller nuff said, Connors is a front running douche, Edwards a prince of clangers and jacko the clanger king, and funnily enough when the key moments of matches are upon us it's usually bc lids, cotch and Martin are being held by the opposition so our lesser lights are finding more of the ball, that's where it's clear for all and sundry to see (except our stuffing MC) that these guys just don't have what it takes to take us to finals, yet half of them are being signed up!!

I believe Connors Miller and Houli should never be seen in a tiger guernsey again
They are list cloggers with limited ability
I blame Hardwick for today's loss for playing these types of players :
lumps, alcoholics and turnover kings
If B Gale was on the money he would get  Malthouse and clear out Baby face Dimmer
No other club would ever put Miller or Connors in their team but Dimmer seems to find room for them each week
How does Tabouli get in the team before Reece Lightning Conca?
Tabouli and Newman can't make tackles stick yet they get games.
We're unprofessional and we need to make Chimp Cotchin captain and get rid of all our sad recent history
A Pick 55  is captaining our club He's played 200 games and never played in a final
We are an embarrassment to ourselves let alone the football fraternity
Dimmer get fair dinkum  or get out otherwise you'll be another Spud and Terry saga
I've had enough honorable losses for three decades
These losses are really DIShonourable because you stuff it up in the selection room every time in crunch games
You're dishonest to the tiger fans and stakeholders so wipe that smile of your face and increase your professionalism because enough is enough

Richmond left to rue missed opportunities in loss to Adelaide

    Jesper Fjeldstad
    From: The Advertiser
    July 01, 2012

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick was left to rue missed opportunities as he came to grips with a winnable match that slipped away against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.

While disappointed after the Tigers led by 33 points at quarter-time, Hardwick was quick to point to the quality of the opposition.

"You've got to remember: they're a bloody good side, third on the ladder or whatever they are," he said.

"It's a good footy club, have only lost three games, so to come over here. At least we had a crack.

Walker boots five to crush Tigers

"But to lose the way we did towards the end of the game was really disappointing. We just couldn't win a contest.

"At the end of the day, we had more scoring shots than them. We've just got to make sure that when we do have our chances that we convert.

"We had more inside-50s, more forward-half turnovers ... a lot of stats were going our way."

Hardwick said the game tightened up after the Tigers' flying start.

"We had come in with a plan to match them inside to get it outside (the contest) and we did that OK for the first half," he said. "The second half it just tightened up.

"The last quarter, their contested ball went through the roof and that was the game. We couldn't get the contest on our terms."

He said the Tigers were missing key players.

"Our forward line, we haven't got Ty Vickery at the moment, which is hard for us ... we've just got to keep persevering with those players and they'll get better over the course of time," Hardwick said.

Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson peeled off the "imposter" label he slapped on his side last week after the 19-point win.

Sanderson said it was a win for perseverance and self-belief as the Crows corrected its course towards September.

"No titles," he said with a smile when the "imposter" barb was brought up. "We're obviously very relieved, after what we saw in the first quarter, to get the four points against a good side, and a side that was hungry.

"A lot of it is player-driven: we've got a lot of young kids with tremendous spirit and will to win inside them.

"The thing that turned the game for us was our ability to get back in the game with contested ball. We were minus 19 at halftime today and that's not how we play. It's certainly not the type of style we want to play.

"In the end, we won by one, so we must have won by 20 (contested possessions) in the second half. So a bit better with our method around the contest and once we got it outside we were able to get it forward.

"Richmond certainly jumped us and we turned the ball over in bad spots of the ground today and they hurt us. To get back in the game and win by 19 points, I couldn't be happier. We saw some pretty great individual efforts today, even when we were down.

"It was a really important game for us. As a club and a few of the boys, obviously, were disappointed with how we played last week.

"Richmond's a good side. They were six-six coming in today and it was a really big game for them. They're in a bit of a log-jam where they sit on the ladder and it was really important for them to get a win on the road, as well."

Coach Damien Hardwick said he was disappointed and angry with the loss.

''I thought we had our chances,'' he said. ''The last quarter, there were a number of one-on-one contests, and Adelaide were harder than us. There is still a lot of footy to go. No one has really got the jump on everyone else.

''We certainly had an opportunity today, especially the way we started the game. But Adelaide, to their credit, came back and played some pretty good footy to get over the top of us. We just didn't make the most of our opportunities. We had 10 more inside-50s and just couldn't get the scoreboard result. It has been a common trend over the last couple of weeks.

''In the last quarter, their contested ball numbers went through the roof, and that was the game. We couldn't get the contest on our terms. We kept losing contests and kept going to ground.''

But Hardwick has certainly not lost faith in his much-improved side. ''You have got remember, they're a bloody good side,'' he said. ''They're a good footy club - they have only lost three games.

''To come over here, at least we had a crack. But to lose the way we did towards the end of the game was really disappointing. We just couldn't win any contests.

''We had more inside-50s, more forward half turnovers, a lot of stats were going our way. We realise it's the development area of our structure. We have just got to make sure we keep working on that and get those guys better.''

Either the club is permanently broken or we are still a bit young to handle that kind of pressure consistently well.
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

Me and username agreeing :o
Terrible effort by Hardwick yesterday
Didnt want to change things when the game was slipping away
'The game had to be won in the last quarter not defended,
Griffiths up forward would of been ideal.
BUT, not playing Batchelor made it a risk to swap players during the game
I see Hardwick as a coach who doesnt take risks DURING the game,
Has a long way to go has Dimma
Am all for dropping players eg Miller , Ellis etc, but please dont bring back Vickery unless he can return to form at Coburg, like other players must do.
Matty White would have to be a certain in next week.
Maybe Matty could take a meal around to the Hardwick family next week as the Houlis do

Either the club is permanently broken or we are still a bit young to handle that kind of pressure consistently well.

That's the part of the developmental phase we are in right now HRT.  We transitioned there when Dimma said at the start of the season we were now about winning games.  We were never going to just click and come good in 1 or 2 seasons and Nathan Brown said it all when he observed that the current group resembles nothing like the team he last played in.  Considering almost the entire list are still babies then it was never ever ever going to happen any other way and those who compare our rate of improvement to the likes of Essendon, Hawthorn and West Coast are just kidding themselves - none of these teams came back from a position of utter list devastation like Hardwick & co inherited, with absolutely no senior core to fall back on.

Hardwick said right from the outset the first 2 years were about getting games into young bodies and then starting to learn how to win after that.  Nothing's changed and everything is 100% on track as I see it.  We have had a watershed year so far in that the whole playing group goes out each week expecting to win, not hoping to win.  How many years since the RFC has had a team thinking that way?  We are learning to win and the very large majority of that learning will come from losing games like yesterday, Collingwood, Geelong, West Coast, Fremantle etc.  The rules of learning in football are no different to life - you don't learn from your successes, you learn from your failures - and you need look no further than Geelong's rise from the depths which has a lot of similarities to our current state.  They assembled a list of kids with a lot of potential but it took a few years and some serious road bumps (nearly getting the coach sacked if you believe the press) before they had replaced their loser mentality and club culture with what we see today.

Nothing wrong with the path we are on or the people we have in charge, we only need to keep turning the list over (1 more significant turnover coming this year I think) until we are chock full of quality kids that can represent themselves and the club in a mature and positive way, and that can play good, team oriented and disciplined football.

He has at numerous times over the last 2years plus come out and said that he coached badly and that he accepted responsibility for losses. Yesterday he had a shocker - do you reckon that he doesnt know it?

Spot on Tony :thumbsup If you look forensically at the crucial moments the scenario you depicted is the same in all losses.
