Chaplin just what we need: Hardwick

Former Port Adelaide defender Troy Chaplin will play his first game for the Tigers this weekend

TROY Chaplin will play a half for Richmond this week at a time where the value of his off-season recruitment is becoming even more apparent.

The former Port Adelaide defender, along with ex-Essendon midfielder Sam Lonergan, will play their first games in the yellow and black when the Tigers take on Hawthorn in Tasmania on Saturday.

With defender David Astbury in doubt for the season opener against Carlton with a foot stress fracture and queries over whether Dylan Grimes will come up, the experienced backman's first game of the season is timely.

"We're certainly looking forward to Troy coming in," coach Damien Hardwick said on Thursday.

"He's a very good player but he's also got outstanding leadership qualities and will further help guys such as Alex Rance, Ben Griffiths, Jake Batchelor, all these types of players around him.

"We're looking forward to solidifying our back six with his presence.

"We'll look to get three quarters into him the following week."

Chaplin became a Tiger via free agency last year after nine seasons at Port Adelaide.

There were concerns over the knee he had operated on at the end of the season but he has come through his rehabilitation and been training strongly.

Chaplin came second in Port's best and fairest in 2010 and was a member of the club's leadership group.

Based on a half today, it's looks a smart free agency decision to have gone after Chappy. He slotted into our backline nicely and it was noticable that we missed him after half-time as our defence seemed disorganised once he had gone off. I doubt Roughead would've kicked anywhere near 5 had Chappy played a full game.

For a first hit out, I thought he was exceptional.
Hardly made a mistake.

He's already impressed me and it was only a half of Nab footy.
He demonstrated a lot of leadership down there which is important as Newman isn't playing down there anymore and Rance has had to do it alone.
Good choice Tigers.   :thumbsup

Rance-grimes-Chaplin

Is there room for griffs? You would think Griffs forward.

Griffs looked much better this week.
I like it when the ball is in his hands. His got elite kicking accuracy for a man of his size. We all know he can roost it but he is just as good with the 20 to 45m passes.
My only criticism is he should be looking at more 50 to 60m passes to really create a counter attack.  Team mates have to learn to run to those spaces and give him the option.
