Throw-in in North's F50 barely went 15m into play and the field ump allowed it  ::). Almost gifted North a goal.

Another butchered kick trying to go inside F50 and Norf rebound a goal from the turnover.

No goals for a while. Frangalas almost nailed a tough shot into the breeze from the pocket. Just clipped the inside of the post.

Final Score

Richmond     2.3      2.4     4.7      7.9-51
North Melb    5.1     9.1     9.2     10.3-63

Goals: Olden 3, Frangalas, White, Bravo, Davidson

Second half was better workrate as a team with late goals trimming the margin to 12 pts (with more scoring shots), but the damage was done in the woeful first half where we were a rabble. The second half doesn't hide either that a number of these VFL-listed players can't kick a footy to save themselves  :P. On the positive side, Frangalas showed enough to earn his spot in our VFL team when the real stuff starts (only blemish was that too casual 15m out set shot that was paid touched).

VFL Tigers defeated by Roos in second practice match

By Zakariya El-Houli
Richmond Media
3 March 2024

In their second practice match that exclusively featured VFL-listed players (with the exception of AFL-listed Category B Rookie Oliver Hayes-Brown), the Tigers would fall to the Kangaroos by 12 points on Saturday morning at the Swinburne Centre.

Déjà vu struck Punt Road, as the Tigers’ slow start in the first half would leave them with a mountain to climb in the second, like the previous practice match against the Magpies.

The Tigers would surge in the second half to try and overcome a 39-point half-time deficit, however, they would fall short, with the full-time score reading 51 to 63.

In a competitive first quarter, Harrison White and Sam Frangalas would hit the scoreboard for the Tigers. But it was North Melbourne’s ball movement and pinpoint accuracy towards goal that would give them a 16-point lead going into quarter-time.

This theme continued in the second quarter, as the Kangaroos’ accuracy would result in four straight majors. Conversely, the lack of entries for the Tigers would see them score just the solitary point in the term.

It was the Kangaroo’s cleanliness of ball movement and ability to repel the Tigers’ inside 50s that would separate the two sides in the second term.

A positive in the second quarter was the performance of Oliver Hayes-Brown. Strong in his ruck contests standing at 208cm, he was serviceable at VFL level and is one to look out for.

The Tigers would face an uphill battle as they entered the second half down 39 points, however, Will Bravo would try to light the spark with a goal early in the third quarter.

Displaying a willingness to take the game on and move the ball with speed, the Tigers had grown into the contest and were matching the Kangaroos.

Performances from Will Bravo, Sam Davidson and skipper Lachlan Street set the tone In the third term, as the Tigers lifted their intensity around the contest.

A lack of scoreboard pressure would be put on the Kangaroos, however, a bit of brilliance from Cam Olden to cleverly keep the ball alive on the boundary line would assist Sam Davidson on the stroke of three-quarter-time to soccer in the Tigers’ second goal of the quarter.

The Tigers had flipped the script, and it was now the Kangaroos who had only one point to show for their third quarter.

Cam Olden would start right where he had left off in the third, kicking the first goal of the fourth quarter for the Tigers.

North’s final goal of the match – and their only for the second half - would come at the mid-way point of the final quarter and would extend the lead to 26 points.

A highlight for the Tigers’ was the outstanding effort from father-son player Tom Bower to intercept the football on centre wing and set up Cam Olden for the Tigers’ second goal of the quarter.

Olden would instantly make it back-to-back goals and complete his final-quarter hat trick on the breath of the final siren.

Cam Olden’s three-goal final term wasn’t enough to overcome the Tigers’ slow start, and despite a five-goal to-one second half, the Tigers would finish twelve points behind the Kangaroos.

Richmond will return to the Swinburne Centre for their third practice match on Saturday, March 9 to face Box Hill from 11:00am.

Richmond 2.3 2.4 4.7 7.9 (51)

Collingwood 5.1 9.1 9.2 10.3 (63)

Goalkickers: Olden (3), White, Frangalas, Bravo, Davidson

VFL Tigers top Box Hill in third practice match

By Zakariya El-Houli
Richmond Media
10 March 2024

Richmond 1.4   4.7   11.9    14.9 (93)

Box Hill    2.0   6.3     7.5    11.5 (71)

Goalkickers: Clarke (2), Coulthard (2), Mykelti (2), George (2), Yassine, El Nour, Ralphsmith, Olden, May, Hayes-Brown

---------------------------------------

Richmond VFL topped Box Hill by 22 points, 14.9 (93) to 11.5 (71), in its third practice match of the pre-season on Saturday morning.

Under the scorching sun at the Swinburne Centre, the VFL Tigers took to the field, led by vice-captain Mutaz El Nour in skipper Lachlan Street’s absence.

After two consecutive slow starts against the Magpies and the Kangaroos in the two previous practice matches, which saw the Tigers concede a combined total of 10 goals in first quarters, they reversed the script and were up for the contest in the heat.

A classy finish from Judson Clarke on the burst from outside 50 was the Tigers’ only goal for the opening term, and they trailed Box Hill by two points at quarter time.

Scoring was opened up in the second quarter by AFL-listed Category B Rookie, Oliver Hayes-Brown, whose strong mark in the goal square saw him convert his first major in the Yellow and Black.

The remainder of the quarter was an arm-wrestle. The Tigers found two more goals in the quarter, courtesy of a crafty Chad Harris, who set up Mohammed Yassine inside-50.

Yassine then found Archie May later in the quarter, who slotted a beautiful set-shot from the pocket.

After five lead changes and four Box Hill goals in the second quarter, the Tigers trailed by eight points at half-time.

In a tight contest, the third quarter was the separator for the Tigers. Despite Box Hill hitting the scoreboard early that quarter, it was their only major for the term, as the host side kicked seven unanswered.

Within ten minutes of play, the Tigers slotted four goals straight through Cam Olden, Matthew Coulthard, Liam George, and Judson Clarke, who kicked his second after another beautiful finish from outside the arch.

The stand-in skipper then got in on the action. After the Tigers moved the ball quickly from coast-to-coast, El Nour floated forward from defence and made it five in a row for the Tigers after running into a vacant goal square.

Chad Harris created another opportunity for the Tigers, setting up Matthew Coulthard for his second goal.

Coulthardthen  backed up his second major with some strong forward half-pressure, which set up Hugo Ralphsmith to boot the Tigers’ seventh of the quarter on the breath of the three-quarter-time siren.

The Tigers led by 28 points at the final change and were in the driver’s seat to win their first practice match of the pre-season.

George became a multiple goalkicker after a clever finish. His work was quickly followed up by Mykelti Lefau, who kicked truly from a set-shot for his first, extending the Tigers’ lead to 40 points.

Box Hill then had a period of dominance in the quarter, booting four unanswered. After pegging the lead back to 16 from 40, they had given themselves a chance.

However, a downfield free kick awarded to Lefau in front of goal saw him kick his second of the quarter, and the settler for the Tigers.

In a tight and even contest, the Tigers’ third quarter proved to be the difference between the two sides, and they emerged victorious for their opening win of the pre-season.

Richmond VFL will take on Carlton in its final pre-season match next Thursday, March 14 at the Swinburne Centre from 4.00pm, a curtain raiser prior to the Round 1 clash between the two AFL sides.
