Nice burst out of the contest by Peucker and Burton. Gets to Alger who finds Lowther on the lead just inside 50 by the boundary. Great kick and it gets in. Goal!

Comedy of errors. Howler kick in defence by Casey but Philip misses a sitter running into open goal.

We get it back on the wing. Collier free and 50. Set shot from 30 out. Goal!

Street on HB to Johnson on the wing to Retschko who hits up Lowther just inside 50. Misses.

Can this team play round 1?
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

Won by 50 pts.

Final Score

Richmond   3.0    4.4    8.6   12.12-84
Casey        2.1    4.3    4.4      5.4-34

Goals: Alger 3, Fawcett, Roberts-Thomson, Peucker, Burton, Toner, Ferguson, Greenham, Collier, Lowther.

Finally something positive to talk about. Pressure and intensity resulted in the second half being played mostly in our forward half. Our link, spread and transitional play via the wings stood out. Credit to Peucker, Burton, Retschko and NRT.

Alger - still for me was our best over 4 quarters from the AFL-listed Tigers. Just looks above this level. Our most effective forward kicking 3 goals (should have been 4).

Peucker - was the one who stood out for mine after being moved more into the middle after half-time. Just had a presence to influence the match and knew how to find the ball. Mostly clean skills too. Can see why we recruited him.

NRT - not sure how many disposals he ended up with, but I just liked his game today. Solid to good.

Smith - one again solid across HB.

Trainor - improved in the 3rd quarter playing as the spare man behind the play. Looked like he was rested during the last as El Nour played that role.

Fawcett - a 'nearly' game from him. Useful but not impactful in that he brought the ball down to ground as a tall forward for our smalls, but didn't clunk too many marks himself that he got his hands to.

Retschko - another one who improved after half-time. More of the wing play we brought him over for.

Burton - as mentioned at half-time, started like a house on fire in the first 10 mins then drifted out for the remainder of the first half. Came back to be one of our best in the second half. Needed a strong showing in his last chance before the SSP cut-off.

Dowling - Had a good battle with Dees' Max Heath in the ruck. Didn't think he did his SSP chances any harm.

I didn't see any of it as I was out.

So watching that and knowing it is only VFL, our team had a distinct game plan/style? That they consistently executed?

Because correct me if im wrong but surely or VFL side would play the same way our AFL should?

My point is people say at AFL level we have nil game plan/style. Clearly we do we just aren't executing it.

The problem at AFL level is it just isn't a failure of execution IMHO. It's not as though we are continually trying to play a certain way with a certain structure but it's not coming off yet due to skills, decision making or inexperience a la Hawthorn 3-5 years ago. We look totally disorganised as a team and bereft of ideas. In the VFL today, you could at least see what we were trying to do even in the first half even when it wasn't coming off due to poor skill errors. We showed purpose and still held our structure. At AFL level where is our structure? Sure, it could be argued that we're not executing any structure either (or the opposition are preventing us from doing so), but then we don't have viable gameplan/style in that case at AFL level.

VFL Tigers down Dees in Casey scorcher

By Anna Pavlou

Richmond VFL recorded an impressive 50-point win in its third practice match of the pre-season, defeating the Casey Demons at Casey Fields in a scorching Saturday outing.

The game started with a bang, as train-on player Tom Burton took no time to make his presence felt, snapping from the boundary after the Tigers won the first clearance of the match.

Only one minute later, Jasper Alger kicked truly, following another clearance from Richmond via Kaleb Smith.

The Tigers took a three-goal lead thanks to the handy work from Alger, who had two of his three goals in the opening 10 minutes of the match.

Patrick Retschko aided Liam George through the middle in the first half, while also laying a scintillating tackle on the wing to finish the opening term.

Alger continued his early first term dominance, delivering the footy to Liam Fawcett in front of goal on numerous occasions.

Taking a one-goal lead at the first break, Jack Madgen's men were able to hit the scoreboard after confident ball movement, via Olli Hotton, who salvaged the ball, handing off to Nick Collier, who found Fawcett 30 metres out.

A goal to the key forward handed Richmond a one-point lead at the main break.

Mutaz El Nour remained calm in defence in the opening half, while Lachlan Street kept calm across the half backline, continuing their dominance into the third, as Richmond restricted Casey to just one point for the quarter.

Sam Toner set the tone in the first minute of the second half, kicking Richmond's fifth major, as the goals began to flow in the third term.

Tom Ferguson, Zane Greenham and Noah Roberts-Thomson all added majors to the board to go with Toner's.

Meantime, Luke Trainor showed his ferocity across the wing, confidently flying for marks and also tackling with prowess in the third term.

Mohammed Yassine left the game in the third quarter with a hamstring injury.

The Tigers took a commanding 26-point lead into the final quarter, and there was no signs of slowing down, as Alger took just 35 seconds to kick Richmond's next goal in the last term.

Goals galore was the motto for the final term, as Daniel Lowther booted beautifully despite the Casey wind, which was followed by draftee Zane Peucker snapping on a sharp angle, as the ball floated through for Richmond's 11th major.

Collier got in on the action late, kicking a super goal from 45 metres out, to stretch the lead to an impressive 52 points.

Alger was prominent with three goals, with support from Lowther (1), Roberts-Thomson (1), Fawcett (1) and Peucker (1).

Hotton was confident in and under the football all afternoon, while Richmond's defence held strong, restricting Casey to just a goal and a point after the main break, while piling on eight goals of the Tigers' own.

I’m on the same page. We need to be able to identify a game style now. It is as though Nothing has changed. I won’t make absolute judgments yet as the season is long by the signs are daunting

Lachlan Street has been named Richmond VFL captain for a fifth consecutive season, as voted by the playing group.

Street will be supported by his vice-captains, Joel Garner and Mutaz El Nour, who were voted in by their peers for the third-straight season.

Rounding out the 2026 VFL leadership group is Liam George, and new addition, Harry Scott.
