Tigers massacre Blues

Exclusive to afl.com.au

Richmond has recorded the biggest victory of the 2005 home-and-away season thus far in annihilating its greatest AFL rival Carlton by 85 points at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers 23.13 (151) defeated the Blues 10.6 (66) to notch up their fifth win of the season, while they eclipsed their previous best win over Carlton, which was 77 points in round one, 1978. Interestingly, that was the same margin the Tigers led by at half-time.

Richmond also achieved its first win over Carlton since the first semi-final clash in 2001, after it piled on the opening 12 goals of the match to set up the win in an extraordinary first half.

The Tigers had a number of outstanding players, including Jack Dyer Medallist Mark Coughlan, who had an incredible 38 disposals, which is his best individual effort in his 56 matches.

Other Richmond ball-winners to shine included Joel Bowden (33 touches) and Wayne Campbell (26 possessions).

Up forward, Andrew Krakouer snagged five goals to have his best match thus far in 2005, while Matthew Richardson and Nathan Brown booted four goals each. Richardson also notched up his 600th career goal and now has 603 goals from 201 matches.

Richmond's defence was also terrific with Andrew Kellaway and Darren Gaspar continuing their fine starts to the season.

For Carlton, Matthew Lappin finished with five goals, while Nick Stevens (30 possessions) and Scott Camporeale (32 touches) were its best.

The match also marked a significant AFL debut with Irishman Setanta O'hAilpin joining the likes of past contemporaries Jimmy Stynes, Sean Wight, Tadhg Kennelly, Brian Stynes, Paul Earley and Dermott McNichol to be recruited from Ireland to play at the highest level in the AFL.

Richmond had a scintillating opening term when it slammed on seven goals to zip to lead by 46 points at the 23-minute mark and 44 points at the first break.

Richardson and Brown had four goals between, Coughlan amassed 11 touches and the work and rebounding of Ray Hall, Andrew Kellaway and Darren Gaspar down back was proving a handful for the Blues.

The Blues had to wait until Jarrad Waite posted his side's first score, a behind, at the 27-minute mark. Carlton had two further opportunities, just moments later to record its first major, yet fluffed both of them.

A soccer attempt in the goalsquare from livewire forward Eddie Betts smashed into the foot of teammate Lance Whitnall and rebounded out of the Blues' attacking zone. This was followed up by Waite having a shot at goal which resulted in the ball hitting the behind post.

And just to add further salt into the Carlton wound, Whitnall's set-shot on the quarter-time siren sailed through for the Blues' second behind.

The Tigers continued the onslaught in the second term when they added another five in succession - and six for the quarter - to lead by a whopping 77 points at half-time. It was also Carlton's lowest half-time score against Richmond since they clashed in round eight, 1908 - the first of their 195 clashes.

Carlton finally managed its first goal of the match via Matthew Lappin, who kicked truly at the 24-minute mark after he led and marked in front of Tiger Mark Chaffey, who was playing his 150th AFL match.

Coughlan had a mighty first half with 24 possessions, while Bowden, Kellaway, Brown and Tivendale were other stand outs for the Tigers. Overall, Richmond had 79 more disposals than Carlton before the main break in a stunning period.

The second half was purely for the record books. Although the Blues finally managed to add some goals to the scoreboard - four in the third term - it still wasn't enough to win the quarter, as Richmond managed another six majors to lead by 92 point heading into the final stanza.

Carlton managed to outscore Richmond in the last quarter, booting five goals to four, yet it mattered little in the overall result. But the sight of O'hAilpin registering a goal from his first kick in the AFL gave the Blues' fans at least something to smile about.

Richmond coach Terry Wallace agreed the Tigers' performance was better than last week's when they came from behind and kicked 13 unanswered goals to defeat reigning premier Port Adelaide.

"I thought we met a side today that we hadn't beaten since the 2001 semi-final - a side that we've got a huge history against, a side that our supporters and past players would love to beat more than any other side in the competition. We met them head-long and handled it very well," Wallace said.

"It was just really pleasing that… we’ve been promising our supporters that we had an improved style of play. I think the guys now are believing it more as it's going along.

"A hell of a lot of effort (has been) put in over a six-month period by everyone at the club, the assistant coaches, players. There's been a little bit of reward for that effort now."

Carlton coach Denis Pagan said he was bewildered by his side's performance.

"Our young players were very negative in their approach and perhaps our senior group was too attacking," Pagan said after the match.

"We fumbled badly and couldn't supply any pressure and we couldn't make them defend.

"They got their confidence up and we were stunned and it was just a chain reaction from that."

What a fantastic day  :thumbsup

I thought we win today but not by 85 points  :o. That first half was the most dominate performance IMO a Richmond side has been in over 20 years. We haven't annihilated a team like that since the early 80's. We just had winners everywhere and just smashed them all over the park with sensational electrifying modern footy  :bow.

Hard to find a poor Tiger. Our midfielders did as they wished. Great to see Cogs back to his best after all his groin problems. Tuck kicked them as well in the clearances. Tivs, Bowden, Deledio, Newman and second gamer Meyer streamed through the centre. Simmonds presented well at CHF although he's still not quite there yet IMO. Richo was again too big, too strong and too good. Krakouer, Browny and Pettifer were just great around the goals. The Blues just had no forwards and Gas, Razor and Kellaway (best game he's ever played IMO) cleaned up. Only downers were Staff's injury (hopefully not too bad), probably Chaffey on Lappin although the game was all over as a contest by then and our last quarter where we switched off and became very sloppy in our skills.

Bring on the Pies  :cheers

great performance by the club these last few weeks, you have to give credit where its due and they deserve acknowledgement for how they are playing, 5  wins now so my priority picks this year are now down the drain lol so lets hope they keep it up. Deledio was good today, in 30 games he will be an absolute sensation, I thought Tambling was quiet today but I thought  Meyer was pretty good. With staff out pattison should come in, one disappointment was the crowd, i know it was 52k but sheesh, you have to wonder what amount of damage frawley has actually done to the club. Wasnt so long ago, that 65-70,000 was the norm for these clashes.  Anyways atleast well have a good weekend now!

Wallace keeping the lid on

After recording its biggest-ever victory over arch-rival Carlton and advancing to a 5-2 record, Richmond coach Terry Wallace has implored his players to maintain a professional approach and stay humble.

Wallace said the Richmond Football Club had a tendency to build 'bandwagon' support and the players had an obligation to keep their feet on the ground.

"Our football club is very quick from the bandwagon point of view to get up and going and feeling pretty good about ourselves," Wallace said after the 23.13 (151) to 10.6 (66) victory at the MCG.

"I just spoke to the players directly after the game and said, 'look, we've got to keep humble and understand what we can control'."

However, he said the club's long-suffering supporters were entitled to enjoy the Tigers' current position.

"There's two different groups of people that are involved in footy, those who pay their money to come in - they're allowed to be very, very emotive because that's why they pay to come and be part of it.

"There's the other group that gets paid to do what they do and they've got to take a professional approach to it and that's what we need our guys to do."

Wallace said the 85-point win over the Blues - Richmond's previous biggest victory over Carlton was 77 points in 1978 - was a better performance than last week's when the Tigers came from behind and kicked 13 unanswered goals to defeat reigning premier Port Adelaide.

"It was just really pleasing that some of the stuff that we've been working on that, that we've been promising our supporters that we had an improved style of play - I think the guys now are believing it more as it's going along," Wallace said.

"They're getting reward for the effort that's been put in. But a hell of a lot of effort's been put in over a six-month period by everyone at the club, the assistant coaches, players. There's been a little bit of reward for that effort now."

The first-year Richmond coach was particularly pleased that the Tigers played so well against a long-time rival.

"I thought we met a side today that we hadn't beaten since the 2001 semi-final, a side that we've got a huge history against, a side that our supporters and past players would love to beat more than any other side in the competition. We met them head-long and handled it very well."

I shook hands with the Messiah  :bow today – but more of that later.

I thought the Port game couldn’t be topped after such a long drought of misery, but today was so special, with only a couple of downers for me which is Hartigan and Staff going down injured.

Pre-game, in the Player and Coaching Link we had Steve Alessio, Rodan and Miller give interviews which was really good stuff, especially when Nathan Bower called Alessio an behindhole when he left the room lol.  He was kidding.  Miller made the comment that the club did the wrong thing by Gas by bringing him back too early from his injury and virtually said his reputation suffered as a result.  And while I’m scoffing down my lunch, unbeknown to me I’m sitting next to Justin Pickering chatting to him and didn’t even realise it was him until Bower welcomed him to the room.  I’m not the most observant and was pretty embarrassed with my faux pas lol.

And then that game – WOW!  Even in my most horniest dreams have I ever had an experience like that hahaha!  Just so proud of all of them, especially our much maligned backline sticking it up the doubters.  GO GAS lol

And then see the fight through my binoculars down in the Carlton cheer squad after some ferals must have come down to say hi and upset a few of them was just orgasmic  :thumbsup

At the after match, we had Chaff, Tivvas, Newman and Krak come back to have a few words and all spoke pretty good, especially Chaff who was on such a high after his 150th and the great win.

Then, as I was walking down the stairs to go home, Tezza  :bow was coming up.  I said, are you going to make a speech, and he said he was, so back upstairs I went to watch everyone go absolutely wild when the Messiah  :bow entered the room lol.  Got to shake his hand and I’m a pretty happy girl at the moment  ;D

Tezza was really proud of the effort, but didn’t hesitate to put everything in perspective.  Was a wonderful game, but there will be bumps in the road before we get to where we want to be.  Good to see he’s keeping a lid on it while everyone else is totally beside themselves.  I luv him more than Miller now lol.  To get players like Tuck and Pettifer playing the way they are, who would have believed it.

Gonna sleep  :sleep like a baby tonight lol – GO TIGES !!!!!  :cheers

LOL Ox

We're back in the top 4, our percentage has gone up by 13% and we have the bye this week  :rollin.

Sheesh there's alot of mediocre teams in the AFL this year lol.

And while I’m scoffing down my lunch, unbeknown to me I’m sitting next to Justin Pickering chatting to him and didn’t even realise it was him until Bower welcomed him to the room.  I’m not the most observant and was pretty embarrassed with my faux pas lol.

Pickers was a pretty good junior footballer (captain of our U19s at one stage in the late 80's IIRC) but leg injuries finished his senior career before it even began. I don't think I would recognise him now either lol.

Don't blame you Ox.

To let the Blues win that last quarter was a disgrace :rollin ;D

And to think I was nervous about this game.

one disappointment was the crowd, i know it was 52k but sheesh, you have to wonder what amount of damage frawley has actually done to the club. Wasnt so long ago, that 65-70,000 was the norm for these clashes.

No I thought 50-55k was what we'd get.

Next week there probably be 65K with the majority Tiger fans - only bummer with that is it is a Pies home game so they get the gate :help

The Southern stand and the new members area were chockers (well to half time at least lol). The top deck of the new stand (general admittance) however was sparce. Wonder how many Blues supporters turned up.

What bye?

Pies = bye lol ;)

Well hopefully after thrashing both Port and Carlton 2 weeks running will get some of the cupboard supporters out in the open.
