29 June 2018Former Chief Football Writer at the Herald Sun Mike Sheahan says Richmond defender Nick Vlastuin can now be categorised as an elite player.
Vlastuin was one of the Tigers’ best in their top-of-the-table win over Sydney last night, collecting 21 possessions, taking 10 marks, laying six tackles and booting a goal.
Sheahan believes the 25-year-old is now more than just a dogged shut down defender.
“I’m interested in Nick Vlastuin,” he told SEN Breakfast.
“I thought he was a journeyman until probably Grand Final day last year.
“He’s an elite player Vlastuin. He reads it well and his hands are great.”
Melbourne great Garry Lyon was also impressed by the Richmond premiership player, saying he comprehensively beat his Swans opponent Gary Rohan.
“He played in a manner against Geelong on his own terms, and when I say on his own terms, he was left to his own devices,” Lyon said.
“I thought he almost single handily almost turned that game.
“I’m surprised that any team would let him play on his own. They didn’t last night Sydney, but he was far too good for Gary Rohan, he out bodied Rohan on a couple of occasions.
Herald Sun sports journalist Sam Edmund believes Vlastuin’s ability to run and carry the football was crucial in being able to regularly propel Richmond forward.
“He’s not just a stopper – 525 meters gained,” Edmund said.
“That is a darn good output for a games work, so he drives them forward too.”
Vlastuin could face a stint on the sidelines after elbowing Sydney midfielder Luke Parker in the face during last night's win.
