WP as someone who has southern Europe close to his heart ,a well nurtured and watered driveway is something to behold...it takes many hundreds of litres of water to get a driveway to the point where Better homes and garden would even contemplate having it appear in their mag

Labor rightfully and decisively smashed in the WA Election. Everyones waiting for Gillard and September. Labors going get smashed electorally. Federal Labor destroyed WA Labor in the West. Federal Labor is nothing more than a shamed and dysfunctional pressure group run by a bunch of hillbillys who arent real Labor people.

The great party of Curtain and Chifley, the party who gave us the great reformers in Hawke and Keating and the party who even under Whitlam gave us what we now know as Medicare has been decimated by hacks, no hopers, hangers on and union bludgers who have never had real jobs. The sooner real Labor People get back in charge rather than these Greenie Socialist Ratbags and their Chronies the better. Its going to be a long 20 years in opposition for Labor unfortunately.

What's a "Chronies"?

All these leaders and their successful major reform ideas were bagged by their contemporaries at the time. Chifley, Whitlam (post-dismissal) and Keating had large swings against them when they lost government. Hawke-Keating were only praised well after they were out of government when people could finally see the long-term benefits. As Gigantor said one year is a long time in politics let alone 20. Just ask Rudd and Baillieu.

As for never having a "real" job, Abbott fits that category well. Virtually his whole adult life has been involved in politics in some way. Actually most pollies these days come via the same uni arts/law/politics conveyor belt before moving onto being a party staffer to learn the ropes before eventually gaining preselection for a seat to get into parliament. The days of Chifley (train driver) and Fraser (farmer) becoming PM are long gone.

Interesting point mighty..why are most of our parliamentarians lawyers(it seems that way)?As an eloctorate its in our interests to have as wide a cross section of our community as possible representing us eg architects, social workers, teachers, sportsmen etc etc.

there should be rules in place where someone cannot be allowed to seek a position in any australian parliament without having say 10 years in a real job first.

And what do you classify as a "real job" Ramps?

public sector job, private sector job and people who have given years to voluntary service would suffice. For example someone who has worked in say private industry for 7 years and given 3 years of community service voluteering or helping out community groups would be allowed to run for parliament under the ramps rule for pollies.

So under your criteria Big Ted qualified as being the Baillieu behind what was "Baillieu Knight Frank"  ;D

And both the current PM & Opposition leader qualify seeing they were both IIRC lawyers

Having people involved in the party from a wide range of backgrounds e.g private sector, small and large business managers, public sector, non for profit organisation etc.. would be in a party interest. Even Ferguson when he resigned from Gillards front bench mentioned the need to get people other than a "union hack" into safe seats of parliament on the ALP side.
