Why should Ellis come back in? Only had 40 touches in his last game. Make him earn his spot  :wallywink

AFL Barometer - Round 12
Nick Smart and Gilbert Gardiner
From: Herald Sun
June 10, 2013 1:33PM

RICHMOND

INJURIES

Ricky Petterd (calf) test
Shane Tuck (shoulder) 3-5 weeks
Dylan Grimes (foot) 4-6 weeks
Chris Knights (knee) season
Cadeyn Williams (shoulder) season

ON THE BLOCK: After that great win in Perth against the Eagles, they won't change too much. However, the up and about Tigers will have a few returning this week for this week's clash with Adelaide at the MCG. Who will make way? We think it may be Sam Lonergan and Shaun Grigg.

ON THE CUSP: Welcome back to Brandon Ellis and Reece Conca. Ellis will return from a hamstring injury and Conca is back from a foot issue. Conca made his comeback through Coburg last week, where he picked up 24 disposals in little over a half.

NICK SMART'S FORECAST: The win over West Coast in the west was massive. The big question now is can they back it up? There are no excuses - they have had a week off to freshen up and will face an Adelaide side devoid of all confidence after their hammering by Sydney. Consistency is the key for Richmond now.

By the time we play The Crows it will be four weeks since that 40 touches he had against  Melbourne
How many games can a second years player miss before he has to play twos, regardless of his last games stats?
Conca played for Coburg, why would it be any different for Ellis?

No change for mine.
Won't hurt either Conca or Ellis having to re-earn a spot.
If we are to become a good side we need people, even kids knowing their spots are their for the taking and they are not assured a spot.
It also amazes me that people want Dea dropped after just one game, he is still young and should at least get a few games in a row to show he has improved. He has earnt that right IMO.
Plus we had a great win, why would we change that formula??
Great position to be in anyway.

Reckon Conca's VFL display was better than Lonergans past two games so I'd say his earned it but agree Ellis should play VFL. Can't just drop Dea to make room for him
Thought Lonergan did pretty well against WCE. I liked his toughness at the ball and his disposal was ok too. Question for everyone, if Lonergan was a first year player, from the VFL or even a late ND pick, would we want him dropped? Or is it different because he has come from one of the most hated clubs we play against?
I personally think he has done enough in both his games to keep his spot, considering he has been the sub. His tackling and pressure against WCE was what we need as a club week in week out. If that pushes others to do the same to get a game, I'm all for it.

Lonner's commitment was first class but his disposal is clearly below AFL standard. He kicked it out on the full in the exact same spot with two consecutive possessions. He was recruited purely as depth and he will rightly make way when Conca and Ellis return.

You're starting to make some good comments. Ellis will surely come in and rightly so, IMO.

I thought his disposal in the Dreamtime game was very poor and only slightly better against the Eagles. That kick early in the final qtr after he marked 50 odd metres out that went sailing out on the full, highlights the disposal concerns, no real pressure, a shot at goall and he butchered it. Thankfully we were so far ahead it didn't matter. Thinking about it was actually the final play in a 2 minute edition of footy comedy capers  ;D

In answer to your question about if he was a first year player would we want him dropped, I would say outside of wanting him dropped people would most likely be going off their collective heads asking how we could recruit someone with such dreadful kicking when we have been told that we only go after players who can kick

My issue with Lonergan is not with him so much but the fact he got selected ahead of a player that has played consistently well at Coburg over a number of weeks (Arnot) when he (Lonergan) had played 1 really good game for Coburg over a 3 week (think it was 3) period. And then the disposal on top of that....

What sort of message does that send?

We were told there would be no more gifting of games, in this case it appears to me at least a gift was given

Of course its different, not because of where he was recruited but why he was recruited. He was meant for depth and depth alone. We had injuries, he came in but now we have players back it's time for him to go back to the VFL. Plus I don't think any other player even in the under 10's in Tassie would kick a ball out of bounds on the full for the 3rd time in a row  :banghead

Easy job for the selectors this week

In - Conca , Ellis
Out - The two Essendon rejects , Lonergan and Houli
Tanking has put the club where it's at - Paul Roos

Seeing Houli played his best game of the season against the Eagles his chances of getting dropped are "zilch"

Someone who doesn't deserved to get dropped will get the chop, most likely Dea or perhaps Batch

I'd drop Grigg but he is a favourite so he is safe (wrongly)

Dea played his best game, too.

100% disposal rate (or bloody close to it) and tough as an ox.

Houli should be dropped before Dea.
