I wish him all the best for the future. The back injury was horrendous. I hope he recovers from it fully in time. It was the right decision to retire. As to whether he should have retired earlier I am leaving it to others to comment on that.  I don't think his recruitment to the club was a wise decision-it was not the type of ruckman we needed at the time. I don't think he ever reached the expectations of the club.

I used to work with a Turkish bloke that allegedly hurt his back at work. No one saw it but he said he hurt it whilst lifting something.

Beauty about back injuries is that even though no expert can see why there is pain no one will question it.  So this bloke could pretty much stay home, go to specialists, get physio and maybe rock up once a month and walk around llike he had a carrot stuck up his arse.

All this free time he was able to build a new deck and redo his landscaping.

But in he’d come once a month in horrendous pain.

Last I heard he’s building his third house now with the workcover payout.  :rollin

I know the surgeon who he sees. He has real changes in his spine so it's not made up. The club is aware of this and so are not being taken for a ride.

Funny you’re one of the first to call out some of players for being soft or gutless or squibs, but that’s a pretty stuffing gutless thing to accuse someone of.

Right off.

Exactly Doc

So why didn't he retire end of last season when the writing was on the wall?

This is about his ability this was a quality of life issue

So for the life of me I simply don't get why he tried to come back

Surprised Workcover haven't sent investigators to catch him doing all that work on camera...especially if everyone apparently knew about it.... :shh

When you are living your dream its not that easy to give it up. So many examples of athletes across many different sports who have gone on longer than they should have because they are clinging onto any little hope of playing again.

Broke his back playing for us or was his back already stuffed before he came? Interesting to know if he had issues before being traded by the Scum Cheats that wouldnt be surprising considering what they (and every man & his dog knew except for us) about the issues Yarran had before was traded to us.

Letter to my younger self — Shaun Hampson

AFLPA
By Shaun Hampson
15 March 2019

Letter to my younger self is back this year, as we honour the 2018 draft class. Former Blue and Tiger Shaun Hampson shares some words of wisdom to his younger self about what it means to be resilient and what to value from his career.

Shaun,

These next 12 years will completely shape your life and the person you will become.

It’s going to challenge you in more ways than you could imagine. You’ve got so much to learn about yourself.

When you start, you will think you know what it means to be resilient, to challenge yourself and to be grateful but trust me, you don’t. You’ll learn what all these things truly mean along the way but unfortunately, much of your early career will be hampered by a lack of being able to properly comprehend these things.

You’ll whinge when you lose games, you’ll get carried away when you win them. You’ll get caught up on the small stuff and won’t look towards the big picture.

You’ll think, “poor me” when you get injured (which will happen a fair bit) and overdo it when you’re not.

You’ll have coaches that like you, ones that don’t and some that just couldn’t care less.

You’ll think you’re a failure when you’re playing VFL instead of AFL and won’t enjoy it for what it is. At times you won’t be grateful to be doing what you’re doing.

Fortunately though, you do get your act together and you’ll also realise the greatest thing about being a footballer… The relationships.

With a lot of help from some key people you will learn to worry about only what you can control. Through trying times, hard work and an improved perspective you will obtain a better understanding of what it means to be resilient.

You’ll learn to be grateful for being able to play football at all, regardless of the level and enjoy every game and every minute you spend with your mates.

You won’t play 100 games, you won’t win a premiership, a best and fairest or a Brownlow but it’s OK because when you do leave the game, they’re not the things you’ll think about or miss.

It’s the deep and unique relationships that football allows you to create that you’ll miss. The camaraderie, care and the pointless locker room chat.

Relish it, enjoy it and don’t get so caught up in all the other poo.

Shaun

Concise version:

Over the next 12 years not only will you be drawing a six figure salary for pretty much doing stuff all while hanging out with a bunch of mates, you'll also be shagging a supermodel.

So just sit back and relax you lucky bastard.
