Richmond defender Luke McGuane may have to wait until the trade period ends before moving to the Brisbane Lions as a delisted free agent, rather than signing with the club by the end of the initial free-agency period on Friday. While McGuane quit the Tigers two weeks ago saying he would like to play for the Lions, he did not have an offer from the club and Brisbane is unsure how many spots it will have available on its list until it works through a number of trades.
The club has five youngsters looking for new homes - Billy Longer, Jared Polec, Elliot Yeo, Patrick Karnezis and Sam Docherty - but is hopeful it can convince Longer to stay and is looking to trade in players as well as draft picks, meaning McGuane might have to wait.
The free agency period finishes on Friday, but clubs will have further opportunities to sign players as delisted free agents. If not signed this week, McGuane could ultimately delist himself from Richmond.
