Sportsfan's guide to the 2014 AFL season

On the eve of the 2014 AFL season, we run the rule over all 18 clubs and predict the premiers, Brownlow Medallist and ladder after 22 rounds.

RICHMOND

Champion Data ranks Richmond's list as fourth-best in the league for quality and their draw as the second-easiest. There's really no conceivable way the Tigers can screw this up. We've got Richmond starting the year on a 5-0 streak. If they top the Hawks in round six the lid won't just be off, it will be blown sky high. We're talking parades down Punt Rd, thousands turning up to training, a surge in members, and yellow-and-black on every street corner in Melbourne. It will be hell.

Win-loss prediction: 17-5

SportsFan's 2014 AFL ladder

1. Sydney
2. Hawthorn
3. Fremantle
4. Richmond
5. North Melbourne
6. West Coast
7. Geelong

Crystal Ball: AFL 2014 Season Preview
By Franc de Borges | March 14, 2014

The big slider?

Richmond. There’s a bizarre sense of inevitability about the Tigers and their unrelenting and overdue march up the ladder that I simply don’t share.

For the side that hasn’t won a final since 2001, it appears as though big crowds and hyperbole are more important ingredients for success than a quality football team. 2013 was their best return in over a decade, finishing the home and away season in fifth spot. While another September appearance is within reach, I don’t think Richmond is any better equipped than the other seven or eight sides in a similar position. Their finals fade-out revealed a soft underbelly that simply can’t be trusted in crunch moments.

That Daniel Jackson won the best and Fairest and Jake King is amongst the best 22 does little to allay concerns surrounding list quality.

The Tigers haven’t made back to back finals series since 1973/74 and will struggle to make the eight.

Final 8:

1. Fremantle
2. Sydney
3. Hawthorn
4. Adelaide
5. Geelong
6. Carlton
7. Collingwood
8. Gold Coast

I don't get the predictions for us to slide. 15 wins last year and this year we double up against teams like Saints, Lions and Giants. Take the Hawks and Freo wins away and we still make the finals. We need to drop games to teams like Bulldogs and Lions. It's not like when n0rf scraped in on an easy draw then didn't make it on a harder one.

That's why Ive whacked some coin on us making finals and also for top 4. Most of the experts have nfi

he actually meant top four of the bottom eight, but forgot an apostrophe.

pretty obvious, really.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."
