Will we be a better team than North Melbourne in 2014 ?
« on: February 03, 2014, 06:42:05 PM »
North seem to have our measure. Made us look silly last year.
They seem to be able to beat teams we can't . ( Collingwood and Geelong )
They can't beat our bunnies in hawthorn and Brisbane .
Is their best player still the oldest bloke in the comp.

If we're better than them why did they flog us by 10 goals, inflicting on us our worse defeat of the last two seasons?

indeed they flogged us.So are you saying that one game determines whether they are or us had a successful season

I'm saying that it's probably not quite as simple as either of our examples.

I see North and us as being on par for the last 3 or so years. Last year they lost a number of games by a small margin and despite not having a great win loss ratio, had a healthy percentage, much as we did in 2012.

Historically, teams that did this, tend this improve their win loss ratio and ladder position in the following year.

The addition of Dal Santo should also improve the team, but could you imagine the squealing if we had recruited a high profile mid fielder and were considering playing him off half back?

I can only imagine what the response on this forum was, when after beating St Kilda a few years back, Thomas declared they were a better side than us, and how did that pan out over the next few years?

Diocletian is correct in saying it is not so cut and dried as those simplistic examples suggest.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."

I too agree its not a cut and dry argument but if you look at our boogie teams they all have strong inside mids with a tall/athletic ruck. One of the main reasons we traded for Hampson was to try and arrest this problem because as games progress Maric struggle to win the center clearances. Hopefully with assistance from a tall, jumping ruck we will be far better played to beat North this year.

Because they copped the worst draw in the comp. We would've missed finals too if we got their draw

not much between a lot of sides.
in a lot of ways norths 2013 mirrored our 2012 where we had a good percentage and lost a lot of close games..and vice versa. atm we lack depth one bad injury run will probably see us miss finals.
the real key for us is again development. we desperately need a lot of players who have been around for 3 4 or 5 seasons to step up and become decent consistent players.
sometimes the win loss column is misleading.

are  adelaide really as poor as they showed last yr with the injuries they had.wce went from the next big things when just about everything that could go wrong did. essendon actually won 14 games ?? with all the disruptions they had.carlton under malthouse in yr two will be better . you can see the talent in sides like gc wb even melbourne these sides will have real good draws.
if mids win premierships collingwood have more and more quality mids  than anyone. mini rebuild and straight back into contention imo.
p/a couldnt do much more than they did. they have good structure lots of youth that will develop more will they slip how much better or worse are they than other teams in the hunt.

then theres nm they are not an old team. in fact overall one of the younger teams going around.
in rnd 1 against collingwood the ave age was 24y 165d and 77.0 games played.
in rnd 23 against collingwood the ave age was 24y 159d and 90.2 games played. the age games brackets this yr will be where it needs to be to be a real finals side.

so many sides in the hunt not even mentioned the top 4. who would really be surprised if any of carl,nm, ad, wce ,pa, gc, ri, ha, syd, co, ge, fr, and even wb made the 8.

theres lots of things other than the win loss column to look at that helps determine where a side is at.
its dog eat dog and to rise above the pack  you have to be so much better than most in all areas.
