Tiger Ty Vickery plans to shine in return to forward line

WITH the new challenge of playing as a permanent forward, key Richmond tall Ty Vickery says he needs to eliminate inconsistency from his game to help the Tigers grow in 2014.

Vickery, who was used as a second ruckman last season, is poised to be a full-time goalkicker this year after the recruitment of former Carlton big man Shaun Hampson.

The 23-year-old, who is entering his sixth season, kicked 27 goals in 21 games last year - nine goals shy of his best haul in 2011 - but his output could increase significantly after a strong pre-season and with more time in attack.

Vickery said the key to becoming the imposing forward the Tigers need alongside Jack Riewoldt was eliminating form lapses within games and across the season.

"I need to play consistent footy and I need to [provide] the strong contest that we need in the forward line," Vickery told AFL.com.au.

"That's going to be my role, to take marks and provide a really good contest to the smaller guys to crumb the ball.

"I've probably been a little bit inconsistent, like most of my game, but I think that's what the best power forwards are able to do, they're able to turn 50-50 opportunities into marks.

"For us to be a better team we've all got to play more consistent footy … trying to always be in the game is a big focus for myself."

Vickery entered the pre-season with lingering groin soreness and was managed early, but he has since joined the main group and made strong fitness gains.

Working alongside Riewoldt and Hampson to build chemistry in the forward line has been a key focus.

"They're looking to slot Shaun into playing as a relief ruckman … and that presents me with a new challenge to play permanent forward," Vickery said.

"Everyone knows he (Hampson) has got a really good contested mark, he's a big body and he's able to guide the ball really well with his tap-work.

"For me to develop the relationship with Jack where we know we're going to work with each other for the whole game is going to be a really good thing for us.

"Jack's got a lot better at changing his game to suit playing alongside other people over the last few years and the team's got a lot better through that … I've just got to keep learning off Jack."

Vickery has kept a low profile since he was recruited with pick No.8 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft, but he has always drawn attention and high expectations from a Tiger army desperate to see the 200cm forward deliver.

"With the Tigers rising and a pretty big fan base there's a lot of excitement building about the future and I guess there's added expectation," he said.

"But as players, we place as much expectation on ourselves as external (people) do. It's just all part and parcel of our job.

"At the end of the day we're playing the biggest sport in the country in a city that's got 10 teams, so it's just pressure that comes with the job."

Richmond finished 15th in each of Vickery's first two seasons, but he said his period at the club had been exciting after the Tigers emerged to play finals in 2013.

He said Richmond's chances of returning to September and improving on their seventh place finish would hinge on winning close games in 2014.

"It's going to be about taking those opportunities when they present themselves," he said.

"We've been through the hard times that some clubs are going through now and it's just good to come through with the core group of young guys we have.

"It's hard to perform and improve to the level you want to when you're getting pumped every week, but the season goes a lot quicker when you're winning."

the great shame for me is there is no real pressure on vickery to perform.
he can talk the talk and fail to walk the walk but still get games.
theres 3 tall options and thats it at richmond. riewoldt vickery and hampson plays ruck/for. what kid is going to step up and push any of em out? elton griffiths, certainly not, mcbean nope we arent all really expecting the beaner to play kp at his current size are we.
what mature recruit did we take as cover i dont see any.
keep on saying it we are very thin on the ground when it comes to proven key forwards. we may have okay numbers but the numbers lie sometimes.

and whats this nonsense about returning to the forward line. he was so poo in the ruck he virtually played as a permanent forward anyway hence we went and got hampson.

now your being precious.
try some plain old pragmatism judge.
what has griffiths done to suggest he can even get a game as a forward at afl level. bloody hell we havent even developed him as a forward in recent yrs.  hes damn lucky to even be on the list.
elton is two yrs in entering #3 and based on last yr is still a long way away from getting a game. what development or gradual improvement did he display to suggest hes going to hold down a key forward spot.
mcbean as  i said, hes miles away size wise. he  hasnt shown a lot as an aerialist because of it. he got most of his goals crumbing last yr and took few contested marks. he may be an answer but hes not the answer this yr. theres plenty of development needed for him to hold down a kpf role.

geez judge you think otherwise but fail to say what that something different is. mate like last yr vickery still has no real competition for his spot and we did little to change this situation now or in the future.

I agree with Claw on this one. Vicks could use some competition for his spot and he probably has had an easy ride over the last few years in this respect.
Hopefully Griff and Elton can make big strides and provide this pressure. I think Griff has the best chance of doing this. He has been training as a ruck/forward. I suspect that the ruck training is intended to bring out some mongrel.

While I agree that Griffiths and Elton have not shown much thus far, things can change very quickly.
FFS, we were saying the same things about Schultz before he got traded and look at him now!  He had one good game at Richmond when he kicked a bag against Brisbane at the Gabba.  We were all saying he was a one game wonder.....
These guys need to be given ample chance. With our own VFL side their development will hopefully be fast tracked.  I think we all can see talent in both these big men so give them a little more time.....Big guys do take time to mature unless they're freaks.
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

If there is a zero percent chance of Elton/griff comming good as insinuated why not put a bullet in them?

Waste of resources keeping them at the club If Santa is correct

pretty long bow comparing schulz to griffiths and elton. as inconsistent as schilzy was early on he certainly played some good footy as a key forward. griffiths by comparison has shown nothing.
on elton i dont have huge expectations atm he needs time to develop. hes not ready and may not be for two yrs.   im certainly not calling for his head as i havent  with griffiths.
botth have struggled to get a kick at coburg yet alone afl.  with elton he has plenty of time and its crazy to expect him to be able to take such a giant step yet alone hold down a kp.  even the most one eyed supporter would acknowledge hes a fair way of putting pressure on anyone.

in the scheme of things its usually incremental improvement over several yrs that allows players to step up to afl level.
neither has showed any real improvement to date.  griffiths has had 4 yrs and lets be honest there hasnt even been incremental improvement. why is it so wrong to suggest atm hes not offering any competition to vickery or to any other tall for that matter.
i have said it a lot. we have ADEQUATE NUMBERS but we dont have THE players capable of holding down important positions.yet we are in finals mode.

the very obvious observation made was,  based on their form to date there is little likelyhood THIS YR  they will provide real competition and pressure to vickerys spot. they have too much development to go to even put pressure on a very ordinary vickery.

its funny we could go out and get a ruckman as insurance and depth  but we couldnt even attempt to do the same with our tall forwards.  we go out and get a shedload of sml/med forwards but ignore the greater need.

they keep on telliong us we have taken so many mature players to add depth and cover for injury because we dont want to drop away too much when injuries hit and miss finals.

what really annoys is reading the clap trap from them.they either ignored the immediate  tall forward problems and talked up what we do have  or they dont see a problem at all.

who here thinks we have adequate kpf cover if one of riewoldt and vickery goes down or both. what we are going to expect griffiths and elton to fil;l the void. thats laughable.

no ones writing anyone off. but ffs where those two are currently in development there should be little expectation of either currently stepping in and ADEQUATELY FILLING THE VOID  if injury hits our tall forwards.
i can say though if griffiths shows no improvement by the end of the yr i will be yelling for his head. 5 yrs of almost nothing with little or no gradual improvement will be  one yr too many.

elton like mcbean should be expected to mainly develop in the twos.

I actually think that Griffiths would be a more than adequate cover for Ty.  I have watched Ty closely and although he has kicked a few goals he has made many clangers in general play.  He has had a number of bad games but they persisted with him. If Griff was given the same opportunities I think he would have grasped them too (and maybe even better).  He played one game last year as a backman and was poor.  Instead of being given one more chance he was banished to the magoos never to return.  There guy lost a lot of confidence after that.  Ty never has had the same treatment.  I actually think that there is room for both in the team and maybe even all three if Elton comes good too as I think we consistently play a team that is far to undersized against the better teams in the competition.
