Round 16, 1980 - Richmond vs St Kilda
« on: July 12, 2005, 02:20:49 AM »
Wishful thinking for a similar result this week  ;).

Round 16.
20-July-1980.
Att: 14,077.
Venue: S.C.G.

Richmond 5.3 13.7 24.11 34.18-222
St Kilda    7.1  7.1  10.3   11.4-70

Main Goalkickers: Disco Roach 10, KB 6.

A day of Raines, Rowlings and Flea getting the taps from the General in the centre and pumping it down to Roach at the tiny SCG.

Richmond won by 152 pts. Our highest score ever!

Sheesh we kicked big scores that year. By quarter time of the GF we were the first side ever to crack 3000 points for the year. That's from only 25 matches  :o.

just goes to show "modern day" football is no match to efficency from the old school.

if we win by a margin like that this week, pardon the pun, but i would cream me pants!

Footy back them was still positional and one-on-one beat your direct opponent sort of stuff. These days the Saints would have flooded in front of Roach. They still would have been pumped but nowhere near to 25 goals. Plus with shorter quarters the chances of 200+scores are nigh on impossible these days. You wouldn't want games to be like that every week but it's exciting to watch a side especially your own lol on a roll slamming on goal after goal.

The EOTT section has a bit of a summary of that 1980 game against St Kilda. Jezza who was coaching the Saints said after just seeing his side get smashed by 152 points that “the Tigers are not that good” lol. Reminds me of one Grant Thomas  ::).

Yeah we weren't that good when you think about it - fancy letting them kick 11 goals and only winning by 152 points - PATHETIC
