Hardwick rues inefficiency in front of goal

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick believes the Tigers shot themselves in the foot by failing to take their chances in a 20-point loss to Fremantle at the MCG on Saturday.

The Tigers were gallant at the MCG and twice fought back from significant deficits to threaten the Dockers.

Richmond overhauled a 22-point margin in the second term and rallied late to reduce a 40-point gap to just 14 late in the final quarter.

But, damningly, both teams had the same amount of scoring shots – with Richmond booting 12.13 to the Dockers' 16.9.

It was an honourable loss, but that was not good enough for Hardwick as the Tigers slipped to a win-loss record of 3-9.

"The one thing (was) the boys' endeavour was there today. I thought they attacked the ball hard and the man hard. Against a formidable side like Fremantle you always have to play that way," Hardwick said.

"I think it was a pretty even contest throughout the course of the day. The fact is that Fremantle's efficiency off turnover was outstanding. I think they kicked 8.1 to us 3.9.

"Unfortunately if you don't put scoreboard pressure on the opposition, especially a quality side like this mob, you're going to get hurt the other way.

"I think we're seeing improvement, but we're not getting any wins. That's the thing that you measure your improvement on.

"The fact of the matter is we're 3-9, nowhere near where we want to be."

Spearhead Jack Riewoldt symbolised the Tigers' nearly-but-not-quite performance.

Riewoldt took eight marks and had seven shots at goal for only one major.

"It was a funny one, I think he took maybe eight marks inside 50 (but) kicks 1.5. His goalkicking was disappointing," Hardwick said.

"I thought his overall work rate was very good, I thought he beat his opponent. Unfortunately though he's paid to kick goals, 1.5 doesn't cut it.

"He knows that, he's a big game performer. He's just got to make sure he kicks those goals when we require them because that's the scoreboard pressure we speak about."

Young midfielder Anthony Miles again showed his potential in just his second game for the Tigers, amassing a team-high 30 disposals and booting a goal.

"I thought he was terrific. One thing he does, he wins the hard ball. He uses the ball really well also," Hardwick said of the 22-year-old.

"He's going to get better as he gets older. He's a quality kid as well so I'm really pleased he's found his way to our footy club."

Meanwhile, Hardwick disagreed with the umpires' decision to penalise a rushed behind by Dustin Martin in the second quarter.

Martin roved the ball from a pack and handballed on the full over the goal-line from about 15m out.

"My understanding (was) if you've got pressure on you you’re allowed to put it through for a point," Hardwick said.

"It depends how big the pressure is, I suppose. I thought the umpiring was OK today, I just thought they made a mistake with that one.

"My opinion, I'm sure they'll probably think otherwise, but that was my opinion. I thought overall the standard was much better this week."

Richmond faces a monumental task to snap its three-game losing streak when it hosts the Sydney Swans at the MCG on Friday night.

Only one stuffing stat matters and that's the win/loss ratio - care to share that one with us, Dumma?

14 more inside 50s , if we could find a young Royce hart in the next draft, we will be right back in biz, get to work bg and pee off that charlatan fj so we're a chance of getting one...  :clapping

I don't buy into the whole more possession, more inside50s and more shots on goal.

Its all irrelevant when you look at the broader element of the game being won when it counts.

We had 2 or 3, 7 point plays. So 3 behinds were effectively an extra to what should have been a goal. If we kick straighter who is to say that Freo who had Sandilands in the middle wouldn't have been more effective as their would have been more centre bounces. Its just a cop out.

Fact is, we continually fail to put scoreboard pressure on oppositions when we have momentum, we are far to easy to defend against and we have shots from pockets and from long range. Our delivery into 50 is awful. Kicking for goal accuracy can really only be blamed if you miss easy shots in the last qtr when the opposition is shot and you fail to put them away (Carlton in round 2 against us). Not over 4 qtrs where the difference between a kick in and centre bounce result, is so different and would change the course of the game.

Far too simple to say we would have beaten Freo if our goal kicking was more accurate.
Go Tigers!

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick blames silly mistakes and skill errors for 20-point loss to Fremantle at MCG
Warwick Green
Herald-Sun
June 15, 2014

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick suggested his team played at least as well as Fremantle, but silly mistakes and skill errors led to the 20-point loss at the MCG.

“I thought we were the better side for … well, it’s hard to say the better side, but I think it was pretty even contest throughout the course of the day,’’ Hardwick said.

“The fact is that Fremantle’s efficiency off turnover was outstanding. I think they kicked 8.1 to our 3.9 (from turnovers).’’

He said “silly mistakes’’ were especially costly, with eight of the Freo’s 16 goals coming from the Tigers coughing up the ball in their forward half “and five or six of those were just skill errors where we just handed the ball back’’.

Having had his team’s appetite for the contest questioned during the week, Hardwick was pleased that his team won the contested-possession count 130-127 and out-tackled the Dockers 61-51.

“The one thing, I think the boys’ endeavour was there today,’’ he said. “You know they attacked the ball hard and the man hard, and against a formidable like Fremantle you always have to play that way.

“To the guys’ credit they fought it out, unfortunately they just weren’t good enough at the end of the day.’’

Hardwick believed his team may have lost six of its past seven matches, but was nevertheless improving.

“I think we’re seeing improvement but we’re not getting any wins and that’s the thing that you measure your improvement on,’’ he said.

“There are certainly some areas that we’re playing a lot better in. But the fact of the matter is we’re still 3 (wins) and 9 (losses) and nowhere near where we want to be. It’s a performance industry and we’re nowhere near where we thought we’d be.’’

He was pleased that Richmond managed to get the ball inside its forward 50 more often than Fremantle (51-37) but lamented that the Tigers did not take their chances.

Hardwick noted that key forward Jack Riewoldt’s work rate was good, but his conversion of 1.5 from eight marks inside 50 was disappointing.

“Unfortunately he’s paid to kick goals and 1.5 doesn’t cut it. He knows that. He’s a big-game performer and he’s just got to make sure that he kicks those goals when we require them because that’s the scoreboard pressure we speak of.’’

Riewoldt appeared to hurt his right knee taking a mark late in the second quarter, and hobbled off unable to take the shot at goal. But he returned to the field and Hardwick said it was nothing more than ‘’a jarred ankle’’.

The Tigers coach was also bemused by an umpiring decision early in the second term, in which Dustin Martin was penalised for rushing a behind with a 20-mtre handball. The free kick resulted in a goal to Danyle Pearce that put the Dockers 22 points up.

Hardwick said the umpires “made a mistake with that one’’.

“My understanding is that is you’ve got pressure on you, you’re allowed to put it through for a point,’’ he said. “Depends how big the pressure is I suppose.’’

The Tigers will host Sydney at the MCG on Friday night, and will hope to get Daniel Jackson (knee) and Shaun Grigg (hamstring) back from injury.

""It was a funny one, I think he took maybe eight marks inside 50 (but) kicks 1.5. His goalkicking was disappointing," Hardwick said."

They must spend a lot of time laughing at Punt Rd at the moment.

""I thought he was terrific. One thing he does, he wins the hard ball. He uses the ball really well also," Hardwick said of the 22-year-old.
"He's going to get better as he gets older. He's a quality kid as well so I'm really pleased he's found his way to our footy club."

So Dimma, why oh why was Matt Thomas played ahead of him for half a season? What possible benefit was that delivering to the kid and our team?

"“There are certainly some areas that we’re playing a lot better in. But the fact of the matter is we’re still 3 (wins) and 9 (losses) and nowhere near where we want to be. It’s a performance industry and we’re nowhere near where we thought we’d be.’’

So explain where you think it went wrong and now that the season is done what has the club learnt to avoid it happening again?
Would our grandiose predictions in the off season and junket trips to Brazil be a clue that perhaps we got ahead of ourselves?
It's that simple Spud

at least he acknowledged skill errors. what peees me is he sees the errors but continues to play blokes who have made the same sort of errors all of their careers and he expects them the errors to just magically disappear.
the simple truth is there are way too many glass half fulls.

how many goals did we just put on a platter for freo and its not just this week every week against all types of sides we just cough the pill up. talk about lack of polish and system.

we could have had 100 more possesions, we could go inside 50 30 more times  we could have won in most areas and we would still get beaten.

something which is beginning to really pee me off about our game style is why when in the defensive half of the ground ,do we defend by pushing the ball back towards the main corridor.we do this at boundary throw ins and Ellis did it  several times on Saturday by doing ineffective dinky kicks back to the middle of the ground, one possibly 2 of those led to Freo goals.Isnt this just plain dumb football?
