Richmond VFL coach Tim Clarke's summary of how the AFL-listed players performed at VFL level in Saturday’s win over Casey:
Matt McDonough2 goals, 24 disposals, 6 clearances
Played midfield and forward in what was probably his best game for the year. His ability to get to stoppages and contests and spread hard was the most impressive thing about his game.
Aaron Edwards1 goal, 20 disposals, 8 marks
Aaron was very good in a supporting role up forward. He realised quickly that the other forwards had better match-ups so he pulled himself out of position to allow them to kick goals. Also worked hard up the ground and had an impact.
Ben Lennon1 goal, 20 disposals, 6 tackles
Played more forward on the weekend than he has been recently. Still managed to find a lot of the ball and tackle well, which was a focus for him.
Sam Lloyd2 goals, 20 disposals (15 contested)
Probably the most dominant player on the ground of the small men. His involvement as a forward was terrific and was among the best on the ground.
Brad Helbig19 disposals, 5 tackles
Brad played a mixture of half back and through the midfield, his contested work in the second half was terrific when we really needed it. A really solid performance from him.
Nathan Gordon18 disposals, 6 marks
Another solid game on the wing, his work rate is really noticeable. He’s continuing to understand his role at setups and running patterns so he’ll continue to work on that.
Ben Darrou16 disposals, 1 goal
Solid defensive game yet again. There wasn’t an ideal match-up for him but he was able to move around the back six in order to position himself on the best forward at the time. Ben also help set us up offensively.
Todd Banfield14 disposals, 13 tackles
Very good defensive game again with his tackling. Didn’t hit the scoreboard himself but helped set up two or three goals. It was his most active game and he isn’t far off a breakthrough performance.
Orren Stephenson1 goal, 11 disposals, 6 marks, 35 hit outs
Probably the most dominant big guy in regards to hit outs. His work rate was terrific all day and gave our midfielders first use. He was able to get around the ground, take some strong contested marks and hit the scoreboard.
Liam McBean5 goals, 10 possessions
Aside from kicking goals, he worked up and down the ground, which was good to see. He also played a role in a couple of other goals. He’s still working on his marking and clean ball-handling in order to make him into a good senior player.
Todd Elton9 disposals, 5 marks
Played down back last week and was good in his role on Casey’s two key forwards. They had no impact on the game. He was beaten a couple of times but won his position overall.
Shaun Hampson9 disposals, 35 hit outs, 5 tackles
Another big man that played a solid game for us. Worked hard around the contest with some quick releases to our midfielders. He didn’t impact the scoreboard as much we would’ve liked.
Ben Griffiths1 goal, 8 disposals, 6 marks
Led hard all day and provided a good target up forward. He only hit the scoreboard once but had three or four shots that he should’ve converted. The work rate was there we just need him to finish off.
