Monitoring is not targeting. Coaches would monitor every player's form in the lead up to a match. If he said "Look yeah nah, we'll focus on completely shutting White down with regular rotations and close checking" then I would have a problem with Hardwick's comment.
Read the article again and see how it really played out...
