I wonder whether we're into a 'big fish' from another club and what impact that is having on signing our key players.
It could be that Rance is waiting to see what we're gonna throw at Jezza or someone similar.

I wondered something like this myself earlier and thought it might have been silly so I didn't post it. Maybe we think we are a deadset chance for a player or two and can't afford throwing stupid money around just to retain players just yet. Negotiating with any player now if they are "putting talks on hold" but want to stay to get the best deal (fair enough) will only drive up their price if they have all season to negotiate. Might be better to wait mid year and know where we stand landing some other players.

So has Ellis just quietly

Exodus at Punt Road coming up - Eddie's dreamt of repeating the 82-83 trade war and once and for all killing off the biggest threat to Collingwood's status as the biggest club - a successful Richmond - for years.

Players must get a lot of free feeds around contract time.

the replacement for martin would come through a trade rather than FA.

I suppose it would come down to why martin would want to leave.
if it was just purely 4 money and he didnt really care about which club then his camp would hold the whip hand, but if he wanted to go to a specific club higher up the ladder you could push a hard bargain, as the theat of pre season draft dissipates.

while its unlikely to get a player of his quality you may get a quality player and a good draft pick.

in this case id prefer to keep rance and get the trade rather than keep martin and get fa for rance.

the other question is if we have this circus every time martin's contract is up for renewal, what will we face when he becomes a free agent?
in all seriousness though, its only hypotheticals at this stage. im not going to get trolled by the media as easily as some.

The other option is to let rance go and give the money saved to Kingy's ( or WAT's) mates to take out Ralph Carr

Al, I'm flabbergasted  :o....whatever could you mean... ;D

Unlucky for Bulldogs who can only offer players something from the Loose Change Menu at McDonalds

Dan Richardson on Rance's contract negotiations ...

"We'll keep talking to Alex's management. We'll keep talking to the management of our other players we're keen to sign. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to put any time frame on it. But all indications from Alex, similar to Dustin, is that he's very happy at Richmond. He's focused on preparing himself for the season ahead and I'm sure at some stage we'll be standing up here and making similar announcements. At the moment it's certainly not a distraction. Alex, and all the players, are working really hard, so we'll just focus on that for the time being and the rest will take care of itself."

Of course Gossage would say that.  A bit like Kim Wankoff saying it.   ::)
