Riewoldt’s 2017 role up in the air

Star Richmond key forward Jack Riewoldt is covering all bases in his preparations for the 2017 season.

Riewoldt spent much more time further up the ground throughout last season and scored fewer than 50 goals for the first time in a year since 2009 (48 goals).

He was, however, still a productive performer for the Tigers, finishing with his league career-high total disposals average of 14.4 and equal-high marks average of 6.4.

Among the Richmond playing group, he was ranked No. 1 for total goals, No. 1 for goal assists, No. 1 for contested marks, No. 1 for marks inside-50, No. 2 for total marks, No. 5 for inside-50 entries, equal No. 5 for contested possessions and No. 8 for total disposals.

But, despite proving his worth as a floating forward, there’s speculation Riewoldt may return to a more-permanent role closer to goal in season 2017.

“To be honest, I’m not 100 percent sure what role I’m going to be playing,” Riewoldt said on SEN.

“I’m just setting myself up to play as many roles as possible . . .

“You need to continue to be a versatile forward, no matter where you’re playing.

“So I’ve trained at all different roles, as most of our forwards have . . .

“I’m just trying to build a strong training base that, hopefully, leads me into a pretty good season.

“I like to think I’ve put in some pretty well-rounded performances over my career, especially over the last six to seven years.

“It’s just basically off the back of trying to be out there as much as I can through pre-season and doing as much work as possible.”

As if he doesn't know? He knows full well but doesn't want to broadcast it.

Yep.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.
