Odd this doesn't happen 3 weeks ago.
It’s very strange.

He is 26 which is prime age for most players so it’s very odd that he didn’t realise this at the end of last season.  Did he, after this preseason, finally realised that he wasn’t in the plans moving forward? He didn’t already know?

I personally was surprised he or the club didn’t look to find a trade for him at the end of last season or maybe they did and there were no takers.
Who knows?

3 weeks ago he wasn't injured. So perhaps he's tried to get through pre-seaon in the hope he'd get the passion back. You know being back at the Club around his mates. And now injured it's crystallised that the passion is completely gone, so rather than playing for the $ in his contract he's walked away

George and Butler are mates, but it says a lot about our Club these days that Butler despite now being at St Kilda was allowed back into the inner sanctum for George's farewell speech.

But let’s can him Craw.

Who canned him simply dont rate him as a player and never have.
an unskilled player who imo has cost us an opportunity to get games into better younger options.
Thats what i think and have always said it.

He aint dumb either its pretty clear MRJ, Cumberland and Clarke have shot past him not inconcievable that he realised he was playing magoos all year where he belonged.Especially with Bolton Martin Taranto and Sonsie going thru there and all the talk of Cotchin playing fwd as well.

Just my opinion and unlike others just because someone retires it doesnt change, but he should have been delisted and have said so before now. How much better would we have been with out him is the way i look at it.

Yes i dont rate him as a player and am glad he is no longer on the list. That's the truth. Outside of footy i wish him all the best. He is probably a very nice bloke.

Now is absolutely the right time to double down on his deficiencies rather than celebrate his contribution to 3 Richmond premierships and wish him and his family all the best.

I have no problem with one thing Claw said

Find it hard to agree with him, but I do

It’s like when a man dies, he automatically becomes a far better bloke than he ever was

Retiring hasn't made him a better player. But we could say a kind word or two before tossing him onto the scrapheap of history -- if he deserves it, which he does.

I don’t buy into this either

Dimma would be saying positive to all playing

He’s hardly going to say “Jase, you are lucky to be getting a game, you were the 21st selected in the team and some in the match committee wanted to pick xxxxxxx”

What Dimma is doing, is being a good coach .. it doesn’t show up anyone that ever doubted George

Considering I didn't post that and it's besides my point I won't take it further except to say that I tend to agree with your assessment of the exchange.

The question isn't whether he was a fantastic player, it's whether on the days around his retirement you say goodbye and good luck or restate a subjective opinion about what a deficient footballer he was.

Did he always give his best for the Richmond football club? Probably yes. Did he pick himself? No. Did he enhance our culture? Probably yes (and who are we to say otherwise if the 'inner sanctum' say it is so). Has he suffered from online and real-time abuse? Yes.

People can be 'hard-nosed realists' at all times -- the day of his announcement even -- if they wish, but I put it to you that most people don't care and just wish him the best and thank him for his service to the club, which was a net positive, surely.

I only said to you as the convo was with you

If you change “probably yes” to definitely yes in both instances, I would agree with all you said above

He gave his all and was a culture positive , no doubt

Friday night walk in my neighbourhood and I see this pop up! What a brilliant reflection of culture for the @Richmond_FC. A billboard to say thank you to ‘George’!
