2014 Rookie Draft, pick 29: Jason Castagna
richmondfc.com.au
December 3, 2014 11:38 AM

Richmond has selected Northern Knights utility Jason Castagna with its second pick (selection 29) in the 2014 Rookie Draft.

A small defender or forward, Castagna represented Vic Metro at the National Championships, where he won the coaches award.

He played nine games for the Knights in the TAC Cup, averaging 17 disposals and three tackles per match.

He also attended the National Combine, where he tested equal fifth for the beep test.

“Jason is a dashing defender who has a great combination of speed and endurance,” said Richmond Recruitment Manager Francis Jackson.

“He takes the game on with run and carry, and is hard to tackle with his excellent lateral movement.

“He also competes well, and can also play as a lock down defender on the dangerous small forwards.”

From the Herald-Sun ...

Castagna was considered unlucky to miss out in last Thursday’s national draft after standing out at the draft combine in October.

The 18-year-old recorded a 15.2 in the beep test, ranking him equal-sixth overall, on the back of a strong AFL Under-18 National Championships for Vic Metro.

“Athletically, he tested well,” Northern Knights talent manager Peter Kennedy said.

“His point of difference is his run and carry, that’s his strength.

“He won the coaches award at Vic Metro, so it was really disappointing that he missed out on the (national) draft.”

In five games for Vic Metro at the championships, the 182cm defender averaged 14 touches at 76 per cent efficiency.

But Kennedy said Castagna, claimed with pick 29, needed to work on his disposal.

“Clubs probably overlooked him more on his decision-making,” Kennedy said.

“His delivery of the football and decision-making needs to keep improving.”

naturally there are reasons all these blokes were overlooked in the draft proper. each and every one will have some big time weakness that needs addressing

Noooooooo, surely not Al. I'd be putting it down to an FJ special.
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

Love the run and carry and how he is prepared to take the game on.

sissed his target on virtually every occasion in the highlights package, will fit like a glove into our backline. :lol Seriously though he is a real dasher, if he can be taught how and when to dispose of the ball then he may develop into a useful player, I suppose that's what the rookie draft is all about.

Yeah but he didn't miss the goal. Agree though, if he can get his decision making and skill levels up he will go ok.
