Richmond chief Brendon Gale won't talk about coach Damien Hardwick's contract

Caroline Wilson

April 28, 2015

Richmond chief Brendon Gale has refused to elaborate on coach Damien Hardwick's contractual status after the club's dismal start to 2015 which sees the Tigers at break-even after the round four loss to Melbourne, described by the coach as "as poor an effort as I've seen from our footy club in a long time".

Working to convince all-Australian defender Alex Rance to remain in the game, Gale said he planned to become involved in the Rance issue soon but would not comment on the Hardwick deal.

When asked whether Hardwick's most recent two-year contract extension had performance clauses which could trigger the final season, Gale responded: "My answer to that is no comment. It's an inappropriate subject to discuss in public and I don't as a rule discuss contracts."

While it is generally accepted that the popular Richmond coach, who has taken the club to successive finals for the first time in more than four decades, has a non-conditional deal with the Tigers until the end of 2016, the realities of football now place him under pressure to improve his team.

Club president Peggy O'Neal said before the loss to Melbourne that Hardwick's benchmark was to improve the team. O'Neal said extenuating circumstances such as injuries would be part of a post-season review but added the expectation was for Richmond to make the eight in 2015.

"We'll just wait and see what happens," she told 3AW.

Hardwick is coaching his sixth season at Richmond and appeared shattered during his frank assessment of the Friday night performance — the first of seven showcase games for the club in that time slot.

"We didn't come to play," he said. "We weren't tough enough, the opposition outhunted us, outmuscled us."

Gale said he planned to talk to Rance who has been in talks with Tigers football boss Daniel Richardson following the revelation he was considering walking away from the game.

Scoffing at suggestions Richmond had bungled its player payments, allowing Rance to fall out of the club's top 10 money-earners, Gale pointed out that the star defender's existing contract had been signed with the club three seasons ago before he had cemented his current standing in the game.

Despite the sensitivity around Rance's current thought process the club remains confident he has no intention of moving to another club and Gale said he also believed the Tigers could successfully work to persuade the player to remain at Richmond.

Richmond captain Trent Cotchin believes it is up to him to get the best out of his teammates as the Tigers look to redress their stuttering start to the year.

"You never want to disappoint your coach, especially on behaviours that we respect really highly within our club," he said on Monday. "We'll challenge each other as a playing group, whether that be on track or in game next week."

The Tigers were uncharacteristically beaten in the contested ball stakes, and managed to kick just one goal after half time as the Demons ran away with the game in slippery conditions. Cochin said the team was well aware of the issues.

"We'd fumble, or let it spill outside the contest and then Melbourne were really clean in comparison to us and then got the ball in their forward half which gave them scoring opportunities. Again, they capitalised on their scoring opportunities where we didn't."

"You look back at the game and there'll be examples where guys either weren't clean enough, [and] didn't play exactly how we wanted to. It's just about reviewing them, working out how to do it better next time, and making sure that when you do get your opportunity that you do grab it, because the game's becoming harder and harder." The captain had 24 disposals to be a solid if not spectacular contributor, but said  the team's performance as a whole was one of his responsibilities. "I need to get the best out of my teammates, and that's also me performing my role."

The next assignment comes in the form of a Geelong side who themselves are struggling.

Actually have no issue with that comment to be honest

Certainly not giving total unequivocal support, which makes a change. If she did give the unequivocal support like Gale has in this morning's papers then people would be up in arms about

Personal take is that at board level things are being monitored (rightly) and they wont' be played out in the media (again rightly)

it seems anything that comes out of peggy sue's mouth you have no issue with. Am i right WP?

I like you WP as i think you bring a lot of character to this site, but your bias toward this american lass is starting to show

Is she even angry? How about discuss the fact that 3 coaches have walked and instead of recruiting another 2 she and the rest of the board/admin have pocketed the funds.

I dont know who is worse gale or herself. After last night i think gale is leading that department. I mean to say we have improved is mind boggling.

No your are incorrect. Have issues with alot of things that are being said by alot of people at the RFC including the president.

Really? could say the same thing about you Angus.

I cannot remember you haven't had one positive thing to say about the current president since she was appointed. Why?

Also, you seem to always bring up the gender issue. And to be honest with you I don't think gender has or should have anything to do with it.

It was reported a couple of weeks back that she and the board had demanded the reasons from the Footy Dept & Admin why Rance wasn't in our top 25% paid players... but as is the norm, that seems to have been missed in discussions. Don't even think it was posted in any thread on this site but I certainly read about it on one of the news sites

I am missing something here?

3 coaches gone?

Who Leppa & Daly?

You can't say Campbell because for the last 2 years at Richmond he wasn't actually coaching, he was setting up the VFL side of things.
So who is the 3rd?

Last time I checked in the last 2 seasons we have appointed 2 full time development coaches (McQualter & Bailey), a new defensive coach in Rutten and 1 part development coach in Ferguson. So that's 3 new full timers & 1 part timer. Now I am not going to get into a discussion about whether they are decent appointments because that's not what you have mentioned, you simply questioned numbers

As for is she angry? I have no idea, just like you don't. Just because the place isn't leaking like the Titantic like it used too doesn't mean behnd closed doors paint isn't getting peeled off the walls. Simply fact is we don't know, none of do.

Me and I have said this many times under the current president and previously under March, I am glad that things are not being played out in the public arena. It's about one of the only things we seem to be able to consistently get right

Agree. I've been of the Benny bandwagon for over 12 months now.

Fair enough just keeping you honest WP.

Maybe it is a gender issue but i personally dont think it is. I mean i look at G Kelly and Bishop and i think they have done a wonderful job in their respective posts but this one i'm not too sure.
The fact she is american didnt help either with all the illumunati discussion going on with bents around the time of her appointment.

If you actually listen to gale and sue do mention our aim is to "win a final" and if not we need to look at why and in some cases there may be extenuating circumstances (i.e injuries) Dimwit mentioned it friday and now gale has also.

Never once has the club admitted their depth/recruiting is just not good enough, which is why we seem to see the same faces week in week out.

Regarding the 3 coaches, I stand by comments. From my understanding there were 3, and now there is only 1 addition and that is Hudson. They would rather pocket our money, go to brazil, than spend it on the footy department.

Taking your view re: campo then who replaced him 2/3 years ago? if someone did replace him then i apologize in advance.

Bailey and Mcqualter were development coaches and what a fine job those 2 have done since they arrived in 2013

Winning a final is acceptance of mediocrity at a board level.
I would prefer a GRAND final.
Is that's wrong?

So their big plan is to win a final, not to win a Grand Final but to WIN a final in......six years ?

Since when did we all agree that would be what we want/need?
