Hardwick's post-match media conference
« on: June 05, 2015, 11:37:02 PM »
Dimma's post-game presser ....

* Impressive win. Stuck to the process. Under Trent and leaders we stuck to the task. Freo were dominant at stages in the 3rd and the guys stuck tough.

* It wasn't just over 4 weeks. We thought we were playing okay at times but 15 min periods killed us (eg: North). Better players are playing better footy; improving players are continuing to improve (eg: Grigg, Titch).

* Pleasantly surprised kicking 8 goals in the 1st qtr. Used the ball well and finished off well kicking 8.1. Reward for effort for our forwards.

* We enjoy travelling away and we have a group that enjoys each other's company. Still some upside and areas to improve.

* Bye comes at a good time. 12 players injured. Rance was incredibly brave as he copped a severe corky just before half-time.

* Ball use inside F50 has been consistent. It's been a long time coming to use the ball well going into F50. We took 14 marks inside F50.

* Pleased with Dusty's output, Cotch played well, Ivan toiled manfully against Sandilands despite us losing the hitouts heavily and in Dimma's opinion Ivan won around the ground.

* Really good game from Tyrone. His second up efforts were important. Kicked a clutch goal in the end to seal the game.

It's amazing how competitive we are when we get selection right.

To think we had a fwd line rotating through of Lloyd, Gordon,  Petterd and Newman. Having 3 talls and Deledio is really dangerous.
Go Tigers!

Hardwick should get credit ... he is actually rebuilding or adding to the ability of the list. McIntosh, Ellis, Menadue and the last couple of weeks McBean. Hardwick has his team but he has added 4 kids to he mix.  :clapping

Forgot about Gordon and Lloyd to be honest. Good depth players at absolute best

What a great idea, to bleed kids over broken hearted hacks and discards.
Genius.

You can really see how important it is to have kids like McIntosh, Ellis and Menadue in the team.

They're so hungry to prove themselves and keep their spot, and the attitude is contagious on the field.

Absolutely 100% CAN NOT afford to let the likes of Newman back into the team. Nor Petterd nor Lloyd nor Gordon. These kids are looking handy indeed and bring spades to the team!

Hardwick thrilled with Tigers' effort against 'monster' Sandi

DAMIEN Hardwick was 'pleasantly surprised' with his Tigers after they defeated top-placed Fremantle in Perth on the back of a phenomenal first quarter.

Hardwick was effusive in his praise of Trent Cotchin, Nick Vlastuin, Shane Edwards, Shaun Grigg, and Ty Vickery after the victory, which catapulted the Tigers into fifth position on the ladder.

But he saved his biggest compliments for midfielder Dustin Martin.

“He (Martin) was trying to match up Nat Fyfe, who was incredible again tonight. Some of those hit-outs from Sandilands, straight to him. I thought our midfield battled really well. It was a tough, hard-fought game.

“I was really pleased with Dustin’s output and Trent (Cotchin), our captain, led well. I thought Ivan (Maric) toiled manfully against a monster, really. I thought Ivan around the ground tried to work him (Sandilands) as hard as he could. We obviously lost the clearance battle easily, but I thought Ivan around the ground held his own if not won that part of the game.”

Sandilands broke the VFL/AFL record for hit-outs to advantage against Richmond, having broken the record for hit-outs in a single match against Adelaide last week.

The Tigers' victory came despite having had only 36 entries into their 50m arc - the smallest number of forward-50 entries by a winning team this season.

Hardwick said Richmond had worked hard to improve its efficiency going forward.

“It's not often we kick eight goals and it's not often you kick eight goals against Fremantle, so we were pleasantly surprised by that one," the coach said.

“We controlled the ball really well at those early stages and credit to our forwards for kicking the goals. We kicked 8.1 and we probably haven’t been the most efficient accuracy side going inside 50, so for us to kick 8.1 was a good reward for effort.

“It's something we've been working on and it's hard to put it down to one game, but it's an area of improvement that we noted from last year that we need to get better at.

“It's probably taken a little while coming and at various stages our ball use inside 50 has been a little bit inconsistent, but I thought for the majority of the night, we used the ball pretty well.”

The victory was the Tigers’ fourth in a row and leaves them in a good position leading into the bye. They then face West Coast, the Sydney Swans and Greater Western Sydney.

Hardwick said the bye had come at a good time for his club, which had 12 players on the injury list. Alex Rance had also received a corked thigh during the game against Fremantle, but had played on through the pain.

Tigers surging but Damien Hardwick says bye comes at the right time

Richmond will hit their round 11 bye with a full head of steam, but Tigers coach Damien Hardwick says the break comes at a good time.

Even though they are enjoying a four-game winning streak, capped with an upset 27-point victory over the previously unbeaten Fremantle at Domain Stadium on Friday night, he says some of his players will enjoy the chance to rest.

"I think from our point of view I think we've got 12 guys on the injury list, so it probably comes at a good time," he said, although Chris Newman is probably the one player ready to return in the next round. "We've got some sore boys as well and Alex Rance was incredibly brave tonight (against the Dockers). He had a massive corkie before half-time and for him to battle though, and play even though, he was obviously hindered at various stages.

"It probably comes at a good time."

Rance was among Richmond's best, keeping Dockers skipper Matthew Pavlich goalless.

After the bye, the Tigers play West Coast at the MCG then travel to the SCG to play the Swans. Being away from Melbourne shouldn't bother them.

They have enjoyed wins in Adelaide, Brisbane and now Perth this season. While they had recorded away wins to Brisbane and Port Adelaide in recent seasons, they had not tasted victory over Fremantle in WA since 2009 when they held off a fast-finishing Dockers to win by three points.

Richmond beat the Swans in Sydney last season, in round 23, but it was at ANZ Stadium, not the SCG. It's been more than a decade – round 7, 2004 – since the Tigers won at the SCG.

But their away record this season and in '14 (winning twice in Sydney and once each in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth) will have them confident of victory.

"We are just selling games interstate," Hardwick joked on Friday night. "We do travel well; we enjoy getting away together. We've got a really strong committed side who enjoy each other's company.

"We enjoy playing away and beating sides away, and there's no harder ground than here as we've seen. We are the first side to win here this year, I think from memory, so it's a really big tick for our boys."

If the Tigers can continue to produce scoreboard pressure like they did against the Dockers on Friday night, there is no reason they can't win a fifth consecutive game.

Richmond had 8.0 on the board after just 20 minutes to Fremantle's 1.0. If they had not been as accurate, the result could have been much different.

In round 5, for example, the Tigers kicked 0.5 in the first term and lost the game to Geelong by nine points.

The following week they booted 3.7 in the second quarter against North Melbourne to trail at half-time by six points.

They haven't lost since – beating Collingwood, Port Adelaide, Essendon and now Fremantle in consecutive weeks.

"It's not often we kick eight goals and it's not often you kick eight goals against Fremantle, so we were pleasantly surprised from that one," he said.

"We probably controlled the ball really well at those early stages and credit to our forwards for kicking the goals. I think we kicked 8.1 and we probably haven't been the most efficient accuracy side going inside-50, so for us to kick 8.1 was a good reward for effort.

"We've been playing some OK footy, but we've had some horrible lapses where we get scored heavily against. The North Melbourne game was probably a case in point, but tonight Freo dominated us for probably a 10 or 15-minute period in the third (quarter), but there was no scoreboard pressure from our point of view.

"I think it was two goals to one in that quarter, whereas previously our offence probably hurt our defence a little bit in games that we did lose."
