VFL Tigers flattened by Werribee

By Catherine Durkin
June 6, 2015 7:15 PM

Richmond’s VFL squad has suffered a crushing 96-point defeat at the hands of Werribee at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers struggled to match Werribee’s intensity early, with the home side piling on six goals to one in the first quarter.

Werribee took a 32-point lead into the first break, and continued their ascendancy for the remainder of the game, keeping Richmond goalless in the third quarter.

VFL coach Tim Clarke attributed the loss to his team’s inability to gain any control of the contest.

“Similar to last week, it started off with the midfield.  Their midfielders really came to play. They beat us in and around the ball. They outnumbered us in every contest,” he said.

“They were terrific with their pressure and they were terrific in their ability to win the footy. Our boys couldn’t run with them, we couldn’t out-hunt them. They were much more efficient going forward than we were.”

Clarke was quick to praise the efforts of his captain Jarryd Cachia, who was a standout for the Tigers.

He finished with 27 touches (15 contested), eight tackles and seven clearances, and provided much-needed intensity around the stoppages.

“Cachia kept fighting all day, he just didn’t have any friends with him. (Matt) Thomas was down in numbers. Matt McDonough was down in numbers. They really got beaten,” Clarke said.

“It was a tough performance. Some of our boys kept trying but they just weren’t good enough on the day.”

Sam Lloyd booted three goals as the only multiple goalkicker for the Tigers, but his efforts were to no avail in the face of Werribee’s dominance.

Chris Newman’s return after three weeks on the sidelines was a positive one. He came on in the second quarter and finished with 16 disposals and four tackles, playing a key role in several passages of play from the backline.

Richmond heads into the bye with two wins and six losses for the season so far.

“Newy was good.  He did what he had to do today.  He got through three quarters of game time,” Richmond VFL coach Tim Clarke said after the match.

“It was a really tough game to play down back.  We had a very inexperienced backline, and Newy wouldn’t be used to playing in that environment.

“He contributed to the team, but it’s really hard on a day like this to play down back and have an impact.”

clearly setting up to bring him back to the seniors ASAP

Newman gets 16 touches in 3/4s of footy and Clarke talks him up and makes  excuses at the same time.

Mcdonuts gets 21 in 4 quarters, which is pretty much on par with newman but gets talked down.

It will be interesting to see his comparative appraisal of these blokes

Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

So are my ways higher than your ways,

What the hell is going on with Lennon??

As I posted the other day I didn't stay for the entire game. Left 10 mins into the 3rd when the margin hit 10 goals, they were abysmal

Lennon is an interesting one. TBBH I have know idea what they are doing with him. Cannot work out exactly what role they want him play

He started in the F50 floating between FF & the HFF, that lasted perhaps 10 minutes. Then they threw him onto the wing, then he went down to the HB line. He looked confused which shouldn't surprise because I know I was.

Might add for a bloke who is supposed to be an elite kick, his kicking was ordinary. He had a set shot from about 45-50 metres and he didn't make the distance.

Honestly, he looked like a kid who is playing with zero confidence because he's not sure what his role is. I would think he should be put in a position and left there (personally I'd play him on the wing as the go to bloke from HB) to one regain his confidence and two use his supposed strength which is supposed to be his kicking

So your saying he has come to Richmond as a first round pick and he has forgot how to play footy?.....not sure what his role is?
Go and get the bloody footy!

Why make excuses for him if he's lazy and not prepared to work his arse off to play senior footy?

No what I am saying is one minute he was playing lead up forward, next thrown to the wing to play outside mid, then 3 minutes n the centre, then 3 minutes later onto the HBF

Not making excuses but watching him it is clear his confidence is shot. How bloody hard on Saturday to get the ball, bloody hard but when he got it he had no confidence to use it.. he is busting his guts and I just don't think this chopping and changing of positions every 3 minutes is helping him

There's a saying hit your head against a wall long enough eventually it will hurt, reckon his head is hurting big time

Richmond’s VFL coach Tim Clarke's summary:

Nathan Gordon
21 disposals, five marks

Followed up his impressive form from the previous match with a solid, capable VFL performance.  Had a bit more time through the midfield, which was good for him.  Ended up having a few inside-50 entries and a couple of shots for goal.  But still need him to show more in the critical contests and apply more defensive pressure, so he can push harder for senior selection.

Matt McDonough
21 disposals, 12 contested possessions, six clearances

Had a good return for an inside midfielder, as his statistics show – six clearances, five tackles and 12 contested possessions.  Our midfield, however, was well beaten by their Werribee counterparts and, unfortunately, we never got going inside.  He needs to play better in order to strengthen his claims for a return to the senior side.

Sam Lloyd
16 disposals, four marks, three goals

Was our best forward on the day, finishing with three goals.  Continues to win one-on-one contests, but would like to see him applying a little bit more forward pressure, to be able to take that up to AFL level.

Chris Newman
16 disposals, five marks

Returned from several weeks on the sidelines with injury and played three quarters.  Used the ball extremely well and helped set up our defenders.  It was really good to have him playing at VFL level to show our younger players how thorough they need to be in their match-day preparation.

Matt Arnot
14 disposals, four inside-50s, four tackles

Was fairly average on the day.  Didn’t fire a shot inside, winning only one contested possession.  He did lay four tackles, and put on some defensive pressure, but we expect better from him in the coming weeks.

Matt Thomas
14 disposals, six contested possessions, five tackles

Had a down day, finishing with quite low numbers for a midfielder.  Was well beaten inside by the Werribee ‘mids’, but we expect him to bounce back strongly from that performance.

Todd Elton
13 disposals, seven contested possessions, seven marks

Had a big game of critical contests, with more than 20 of them.  Competed well in the air, taking five contested marks, but also was beaten in a handful of contests, which resulted in opposition goals.  Being a strong competitor, he’s bound to be fired up to play better footy after the bye.

Jayden Short
11 disposals, six contested possessions, three tackles

Was slightly down on previous weeks, but still had some good energy inside 50, although he didn’t have any shots for goal.  Had a few tackles and applied some forward-half pressure.  Overall, however, we expect more from him.

Ben Lennon
10 disposals, three marks

Was going okay in the first half until he hurt his calf.  Hopefully, it’ll be right in the next couple of weeks, so he can continue his push for a return to senior ranks.  Hit the scoreboard twice and took some good grabs in his time out there.

Reece McKenzie
Eight disposals, four marks

Struggled to get going in the first half, but he did take a couple of strong grabs, which showed what he’s capable of.  Didn’t hit the scoreboard, though, in what was a pretty tough day for forwards.  We expect improvement from him in the second half of the season.

Liam McBean
Eight disposals, nine hit-outs, one goal

Had a tough day.  Was well beaten by his close-checking opponent, who didn’t give him much room to move.  He did kick a nice goal, however, and won a couple of hit-outs when he went into the ruck, but we expect better from him after his return from senior football.

Ivan Soldo
Six disposals, three marks, four hit-outs

Really pleasing to see him playing his first game in the VFL.  Took some good marks, used the ball well, and his ruckwork was good, too.  He just needs to keep learning how to play the game. The second half of the season will provide an opportunity for him to receive some good game-day education.

Clarke's assessments clearly being dictated to him by others....talk down McDonough's 21 disposals because he already has a line through his name and prepare everyone for Newman's call up by talking up his 16 disposals.....

I don't mind the club raising the bar for the youngsters wanting them to earn a promotion to the senior team. Unfortunately gifting games to senior fringe players that aren't performing in the reserves can give the wrong message to those youngsters coming through.
Senior players coming back from injury however should be eased back through the reserves to gain valuable match fitness & touch. Those players that have already earned there stripes from years of quality games and great service to the team.
Its good thst the new generation of youngsters aren't just gifted games but have to show the determination, improvement & consistency the club is looking for to ensure ongoing success.
The club that keeps giving.
