Tigers scrap their way past valiant Giants

RICHMOND has overcome kicking and disciplinary woes to snatch a nine-point win over Greater Western Sydney at the MCG.

In a low-scoring but high tension clash, time and again the Tigers looked to have kicked themselves out of the contest, only to triumph with a fourth-quarter surge.

Trailing by 15 points at three-quarter time, Shane Edwards' two goals were priceless as the Tigers won 10.18 (78) to 10.9 (69).

Impressive forward Jack Riewoldt started the fourth quarter comeback with a 50 metre bomb.

Midfield warrior Edwards sealed it with a mark and finish inside the final minute.

In between were moments of high drama as both the Tigers and Giants threatened to win it.

Jeremy Cameron momentarily stopped the GWS dam from bursting, responding with a fine snap goal.

But Edwards' stunning solo clearance and goal from the restart followed by a nice captain's effort from Trent Cotchin tied the scores and allowed Richmond to run over the top of the gallant Giants.

Heavily favoured to beat GWS on a wet MCG, the Tigers were a shadow of the side that stunned the Sydney Swans at the SCG last weekend.

Worse still, Cotchin and influential ruckman Ivan Maric could face match review panel scrutiny for high hits.

With Richmond barely threatening the scorers early, Cotchin's late attempted spoil caught the head of Zac Williams and sparked a mass melee.

More than 20 players were drawn in to remonstrate the Tiger skipper's reckless act, which saw him reported and also drew a 50 metre penalty.

Williams missed his shot for goal in front of the Richmond cheer squad, letting the Tigers off the hook.

Leon Cameron's side laid an astonishing 29 first-quarter tackles but couldn't kick clear in the weather.

GWS took a five-point lead into the main break after Cameron and Adam Treloar kicked their first goals.

In the third term, the Giants broke clear of the weather and through Rhys Palmer (3.0), raced to the game's biggest lead of 15 points.

Maric lashed out at young midfielder Jack Steele at a rucking contest to find his name in the umpire's book.

But in the final term, Richmond were able to break free of the GWS shackles and continue their mid-season surge.

Richmond has come from behind to secure a crucial four points against Greater Western Sydney at the MCG.

In a scrappy affair in greasy conditions in front of 35,968 fans, the Tigers came from 15 points behind at three-quarter-time to win by nine points, 10.18.78 to 10.9.69.

Richmond kicked five goals in a dominant final term, from 11 scoring shots.

Trent Cotchin was brilliant for the Tigers, collecting a game-high 33 disposals, kicking two goals and laying seven tackles, including a crucial snap to level the scores in the last term.

Jack Riewoldt and Shane Edwards (24 disposals) each booted two goals, while Rhys Palmer kicked three for the Giants.

Bachar Houli was resolute in defence, winning 32 disposals, and Dustin Martin was prolific throughout, with 28 possessions and 10 tackles.

GWS dominated the game’s early exchanges, and its territorial advantage resulted in an opportunist goal from Palmer after seven minutes.

The Tigers responded, but could only manage one goal for the quarter - a set shot from Jack Riewoldt after he was found inside 50 by Kane Lambert.

The Giants struck late in the term with a goal from Callum Ward from the boundary, giving the visitors a six-point lead at quarter time.

Cotchin, who had 16 disposals and five tackles in the first half, put Richmond in front early in the second after an off-the-ball free kick.

Brett Deledio then kicked truly after some individual brilliance from Riewoldt to extend the margin.

As the scrap continued, GWS bounced back with the last two goals of the quarter to wrest back the momentum at the main break.

Richmond emerged from half time full or energy, with two set shot misses followed by a goal on the run to Martin as the lead changed hands yet again.

However, the Giants hit back again with goals to Palmer and Tom Scully, before Nathan Gordon steadied things for the Tigers.

With the game on the line, GWS booted two crucial goals in time-on to take a 15-point buffer into the final change.

After a rev-up from coach Damien Hardwick, Riewoldt started the Tiger fightback with a long bomb from outside 50, which was immediately matched by a clever snap from Jeremy Cameron.

Edwards then pounced on a centre clearance with a classy running goal, before Cotchin’s snap levelled the scores after 14 minutes.

Anthony Miles missed a chance to ice the contest with a couple of minutes remaining, but Edwards finished the job with a set shot with less than a minute left.

The win lifts the Tigers to a record of eight wins and five losses ahead of this Friday night’s blockbuster against Carlton.
