It doesn't look like a free or 50m penalty was paid either  ::).

Apparently, Dusty was penalised under the "spirit and intention of awarding free kicks" clause in the AFL rules.

15.1.1 Spirit and Intention of Awarding Free Kicks
It is the spirit and intention of these Laws that a Free Kick shall
be awarded to:
(a) ensure that a Match is played in a fair manner;

15.10.1 When Awarded
A Free Kick shall be awarded against a Player or a Team where the field
Umpire is of the opinion that:
(f) a Player has engaged in misconduct.

16.7 FURTHER BREACH OF LAWS BEFORE DISPOSAL
(b) Where a Field Umpire has awarded a Free Kick or a Mark to a Player
and before disposing of the football a Player from the opposition Team
engages in conduct for which a Free Kick would ordinarily be awarded,
then the resultant Free Kick shall be taken where the offence occurred, or
a Fifty-Metre Penalty shall be awarded
to the Player with the original Free
Kick or Mark, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending Team.

Nah, it's alright to play "unsocial football" where you punch an unaware young opponent in the guts off the ball (Josh Gisbon) or stick a raised knee into an opponent's thigh that leaves them injured with a corky (Sam Mitchell twice). However, squirt an opponent with a bit a water and the ump does this --> :scared

all part of the script, Freo are allowed to play 'tough finals like footy'  to prepare them for their home final.  FIFA doesn't like it when we rough up their chosen team for the year.
It's a damn shame that when Cotchin got a soft as butter free kick in the last that he had to kick it out of bounds on the full. He must of been told we weren't allowed to win this and following the script too.  ::) ::) ::)
You found one dodgy free for us against the run of them against us?  mug.

My point is that we lost it.
The umpiring was substandard but so was our kicks at goal. Using bad umpiring as an excuse for losing is not taking responsibility for mediocrity.

Yep, and compare that to some of the other free kicks for holding the ball and you're left scratching your head. Pretty sure that is THE perfect example of where they wanted to have a stricter interpretation of holding the ball

Umpires boss admits to free kick 'hiccup'

Callum Twomey
afl.com.au
July 27, 2015 1:09 PM

AFL UMPIRES boss Wayne Campbell was surprised at the "spike" in free kicks on the weekend and admits the League's officials went overboard on advice to look for more infringements.

There was an average of 46.2 free kicks paid in the nine games in round 17, up by 10 from the previous round.

The umpires had been coached last week to look for infringements in marking contests, pushes in the back and 50m penalties, but Campbell said some miscommunication had seen the umpires take things further in what he called "a hiccup".

"We've been coaching the last couple of weeks to try to find two or three missed free kicks," he said on Monday.

"We certainly didn't expect the spike that occurred on the weekend. We didn't want it to go from the number it was to the number it got to in the end."

Clubs have already complained to the umpires' department about the over-officiating across the round, and Campbell said the AFL would have informed the clubs of a change in umpiring mentality had it been aware it would be so significant.

"We'd like to think that since [umpires coach] Hayden (Kennedy) and I started we've been very transparent with clubs, and any time we've made any sort of adjustment no matter how subtle it was, we've actually told them," Campbell said.

"On the weekend we saw it umpired a little differently to what it was the previous week and we weren't expecting that spike.

"It was a little surprise to us as well, and so therefore we weren't able to tell the clubs because we didn't see the spike coming."

Free kicks are slightly up on last year overall, with an average of 36 paid each game in 2015 compared to 33.4 last season.

The significant jump across round 17 attracted criticism and brought confusion, but Campbell said there had been no instruction to pay more free kicks to encourage a more free-flowing game style.

"Clearly if you pay more free kicks it opens the game up, but there's been no direction from anywhere that we have to pay a certain amount of free kicks or we have to pay more free kicks," he said.

"We as an umpiring department thought that we were missing two or three free kicks and we want to be consistent and get to that level where the public know what is a free kick and what's not."

Campbell supported the decision to award a free kick against Richmond star Dustin Martin for spraying water on a Fremantle opponent, but acknowledged the uncertainty around the rules for ruck contests after several puzzling frees were paid over the weekend.

"In general the philosophy is that we want both rucks to be able to get an even chance at the ball. And secondly, it's not an easy area to adjudicate especially around the ground with third-man up and things like that," Campbell said.

Sorry mate if you couldn't see something was wrong in that game you should play barbie dolls with the kids instead of watching or playing football, because it was crooked and that is what this thread is about.  No one disputes the missed kicks, we are discussing the maggots :cheers
