Looks a good size
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Don't care if he misses the early rounds. Rather we be cautious and make sure he is 100% right when he does return to the senior side.

Good news indeed. How much has he missed then about 4 weeks?

At least he can on his right foot. It was his left that was injured.  :shh

As long as he can run and kick on his right he'll be ok and we will still have a great player.

Bloke could play on his middle leg and still kick goals

Premiership forward Rioli has used the camp to start his running program as he continues rehabilitation from an ankle injury sustained in the Grand Final.

"He's started running out on the grass, and really we're re-educating him on how to run again, because he hasn't run for so long, he's been in a boot," Burge said.

"We're teaching him how to move again, posture, all this sort of stuff with running before we start to do any longer running.

"We want to get that right first. If we don't get that right first it could lead to other types of injuries, like over-use injuries.

"He's doing really, really well. From what I saw today, his second session back out here, I was really impressed."

Hardwick said young star Daniel Rioli had had a medical plate removed as he continued to recover from his serious AFL grand final injury.

Rioli had the operation on his foot last week and coach Damien Hardwick said the small forward continued to make good progress.

While there has been speculation about Rioli being available for round one, the Tigers will take no risks with his comeback.

"He'll be a little way away - you've got to remember, he's had a pretty signifcant injury," Hardwick told the AFL website.

"He's a very important player for us ... so we'll take it pretty slowly with Daniel."

Rioli returned to running last month for the first time since the grand final.

Memories of previous pre seasons and Lids ongoing injury concerns. Wouldn't expect to see young Daniel until at least after the first couple of months of the season proper. Gives some other guys a chance to cement a spot which is only a good thing.

Timing of Rioli return remains a mystery

THERE is still no clarity on Daniel Rioli's return from injury, with the premiership Tiger yet to join in main training as the long and cautious recovery from his broken ankle continues.

Rioli, 20, needed surgery on his foot the week after Richmond's Grand Final triumph, having injured his ankle in the final quarter of the win over Adelaide.

AFL.com.au understands he underwent a second operation earlier this year to remove plates that were inserted into the joint back in October.

While he started running in late January, he has only recently ramped up his fitness program.

Coach Damien Hardwick said on Wednesday there was no set return date for Rioli as he continued to work through his rehabilitation.

"He's going OK, he's running, he's starting to do some speed work," Hardwick said.

"Where he plays or where he falls into our calculations, we're not too sure at this stage, we don't want to put a timeframe on it.

"He's progressing, which is a positive for us."

The Tigers maintain Rioli's recovery hasn't hit any hurdles and isn't taking longer than they planned.

He was off his feet for a large part of the off-season and essentially needed to learn how to run again when he finally shed his moon boot.

The Tigers are being cautious with not overloading the 43-game forward to ensure the rest of his body remains intact and avoids injuries caused by sudden over-use.

Rioli is expected to need at least a month of serious training before being considered for a return to the field, which will almost certainly be in the VFL.

Dan said pre-game that he'll be back by around rounds 4-5.
