Rate a Tiger's year - Toby Nankervis?
« on: October 02, 2023, 02:22:34 AM »
Next up is Big Nank.

The co-captain in his ninth year of AFL and 7th with the Tiges played 15 out of a possible 23 games in 2023 to take his career total to 136 (124 with Richmond). He sustained a syndesmosis injury to his left ankle against the Bulldogs in Round 4 and missed the next 5 weeks. Nank then copped a 3-week suspension from the AFL Tribunal for a high bump on Swan Jake Lloyd which saw him also miss Rounds 18-20 (Eagles, Hawks & Dees).

As poor a year as you can get from a so called leader.

I will forever be grateful for what he produced in our dynasty, but facts are facts. Since that elimination final against the lions he has been crap.

Gave a 3 and that's generous

Has had one full year in his past 5 seasons. That’s my worry, he’s a player that needs continuity to get going.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Gave him a 4.

Had some great games but I think the stats flatter him.

For every good act he’s does on the footy field- you know his next brain fart is only moments away .

He always seems to stall momentum by giving away silly free kicks.

And he’s our captain.

The way Toby plays is the way I wish I played .
He’s hard and tuff and yes there’s brain fades .
Wish every Richmond player had his heart and endeavour
I reckon every Richmond player grows a metre taller , is faster and stronger when Toby is lurking nearby
I gave him an 8

Gave him a 4. Disappointing on a number fronts IMHO

When we really needed him to lead, start dragging his team-mates over the line in games he got himself suspended. It was stupid wasn't leadership and it cost us

Can I add he used to be a really reliable shot at goal, not this season

I think he is burdened by the Captaincy.

I gave him a 2

In 2023 in my view is as follows:

Ruck craft

= Poor as he was beaten by his opponent most weeks. Hit outs to advantage just were just terrible. His hit outs were always under real pressure and often went to the opposition.

Around the ground

= He had little impact in too many games. In his better years he had enormous impact Around the ground taking marks down back and forward. More importantly in his good years he crashed packs and made his presence felt. Now he is just Meh..
One really disappointing aspect to his year was he was trailing behind his opponent far too often.

Discipline

= very Poor in 2023 much like 2022..

For this reason I hope he steps down from the Captaincy to concentrate on his game, get fitter and with more focus. I am nervous we may have seen the best of him which is why I worry about losing Soldo.

Just my opinion.
