Hardwick remains upbeat despite big loss

The Age
16 April 2016

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick was accurate in his summation of Richmond's 68-point loss to West Coast on Friday night.

"We just got beaten tonight by a far superior unit. We played a side tonight that smashed us in contested ball, forward half, turnover, and on the scoreboard," he said.

"That's the game in a nutshell. It's quite easy to see why they won."

But you have to wonder if he has the answers as to how he's going to turn it around.

"We've got to mend the process. Obviously it's broken at the moment," he said.

"We'll take stock, look at some things that we're doing, tinker a few things and try and get a better result.

"So we'll work our way through it. We've got a pretty significant break (nine days), so we'll be able to get some training into the boys and try to rectify a few of the issues we're having at the minute."

There is a fair bit to rectify.

The Tigers are now 1-3 after consecutive losses to Collingwood, Adelaide and now West Coast.

After playing Melbourne in round five and then Port Adelaide in round six (both at the MCG), they have a tough run against Hawthorn, Sydney, and Fremantle (back in Perth). They also have to play North Melbourne and Gold Coast before their bye in round 13.

They look like being without David Astbury due to an ankle injury that resulted in him nearly having to be carried from Domain Stadium. And Shaun Hampson sat in the bench wrapped in ice bags for the second half – and should have been there a quarter earlier.

Ivan Maric and Brett Deledio will both come into contention for the game against the Demons, but both are under-done and in desperate need of a run.

But it is only round four and Hardwick remains confident that finals are still very much achievable this season.

"Very much so," he said. "It seems so far way at the moment. But we've been in this situation before. I'm pretty confident our players and our coaching group will bounce back.

"Prior to tonight we'd averaged 26, 27 shots on goal. We've been giving over the ball a little bit too early through back half transition, which we spoke about over the course of the last two weeks.

"We've been in a similar situation before. We'll modify a few things, and go back to the drawing board on a couple of others.

"The game changes, we've got to change. We tried to go with the change, it didn't work out, so we'll look at a few things to see how it works out from here on end."

Damien Hardwick confident Tigers still in finals mix

AFL.com.au
16 April 2016

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick says his side can still make the finals, despite winning just one of its first four games and being thrashed by West Coast in Perth.

The Tigers managed to send the ball inside their attacking 50m arc on just eight occasions in the first half as West Coast piled on 10.13 to take a nine-goal lead into the half-time break and put the result beyond doubt.

But Hardwick said his side was still capable of playing finals football in 2016.

“It seems so far away at the moment, but as I said previously we have been in this situation before. I’m pretty confident now (of) our players and our coaching group bouncing back,” he said.

In the past two seasons, Richmond has started poorly, only to string together several wins in the back end of the year and storm into the finals.

Last year, the Tigers won 13 of their last 16, while they forced their way into the finals in 2014 with nine consecutive wins to round out the home-and-away season.

And things are looking up with the possibility of joint vice-captains Brett Deledio and Ivan Maric to return to AFL action against Melbourne at the MCG next Sunday.

Maric completed three quarters in the VFL last week and is expected to play again this weekend, though Hardwick said he would have preferred to rest his star ruckman after Shaun Hampson suffered a thigh injury against West Coast.

“He (Maric) needs games. Ideally we wouldn’t (play him), but he’s only played a half in the NAB and then played three quarters last week, so he needs touch,” Hardwick said.

Deledio, meanwhile, will have to come through another week of training before being declared ready to resume.

Hardwick said he had been disappointed with his team’s performance over the past three weeks. The process was “broken” and his side hanballed too often, he said.

“Clearance and contested ball tonight we got belted, which doesn’t help, but when you are trying to attack from the back half all the time. It’s too hard,” he said.

“Sides are too good defensively, so we have got to make sure we get the ball in our front half and then we can start to dictate terms a little bit more. We haven’t probably had that at any stage this year.”

He did reserve some praise for captain Trent Cotchin, who had 29 possessions, star forward Jack Riewoldt, and Alex Rance, who kept star West Coast full-forward Josh Kennedy to two goals.

Hardwick said Hampson had a corked thigh and was in doubt for the match against Melbourne, while David Astbury had suffered a “significant” ankle sprain.

Deledio, Maric..Deledio, Maric..Deledio, Maric..Deledio, Maric..Deledio, Maric..Deledio, Maric..Deledio, Maric..

Where is the depth???? Cream on top?????

I'm done listening to his poo and the continual reliance on Maric and Dededio returning, their absence is not the problem. You don't see the Eagles suffering without Priddis...FFS... :banghead

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

The presser was fairly long and I could be bothered reading it all but was there any mention of the rebuild or are they still keeping it on the down low

None. When asked by a reporter about the "half step" nonsense he just responded by saying that was due to senior players being out.

Knowing how dillusional he is he was probably referring to the ones that retired last year.

Currently a member of the Roupies, and employed by the great man Roup.

* We've just got to back on the horse and keep working through things. Tried some changes but they didn't work tonight. Back to the drawing board.

4 weeks in and we're trying things and have to go back to the drawing board??

What did they do all pre-season??

Delusional with a capital D..... This guy just doesn't have the answers so expect the same spin after every loss and yes based on last night's performance there will be a lot of these.

Still believe the inner sanctum of the RFC saw this coming and extended Hardwick to commence the early rebuild and absorb the initial backlash although they probably weren't expecting injuries/performances to impact so quickly following his mandate to go through the process.

Now waiting for someone at the club to confirm this and come to the defence of Hardwick at some point.

Yep expect a bottom two finish this year and the same next year with a priority pick (if they still have them)

Credit where it's due .. Hardwick is good at turning things around. But 6,7,8 rounds into the season is far too late.

This far into his coaching tenure he should not be in the position of "turning things around", he should be in the position of securing a top 4 berth!
