PSD - a waste of time?
« on: December 07, 2005, 06:53:28 PM »
Miller saying that we'll go most likely for a kid in the PSD and not a recycled player, or in fact bypass the PSD altogether, made me think how useful and successful PSD picks really are as we've had a pretty miserable strike-rate. Ignoring last year as it's too recent to judge, from 1999-2003 it seems most clubs selections over that period didn't fare much better in terms of PSD picks no longer being on their lists:

Adelaide      1 (Trent Hentschel) still on their list from 6 PSD picks.
Brisbane     0/2
Carlton        1/2 (Nick Stevens)
Coll'wood     1/7  (Blake Caracella)
Essendon       -
Fremantle    0/3
Geelong       0/2
Hawthorn    0/3
Kangaroos    0/1
Melbourne   1/6   (Simon Godfrey)
Port Adel.     2/4  (Josh Mahoney, Jacob Surjan)
Richmond     0/3
St Kilda        2/6   (Brett Voss, Stephen Powell)
Sydney         1/5   (Craig Bolton)
WCE            0/1
Bulldogs       0/6

Makes you think that unless a 'blind freedy' top player is out of contract you're better off sticking with young rookies as the PSD seems as a waste of time.

What do you guys think?

Adelaide got a good one in 1996 - Simon Goodwin. Lucky Adelaide, he's a gun. Lucky Goodwin too, played in premierships his first 2 years.

Eddie Betts doesn't count Razor. ;)
1999-2003, last year not included. I know my 1996 example doesn't fit in there either but it's one fantastic success amongst mostly miserable failures that I thought I'd point out. (plus he's still there, although he wasn't recycled)

In answer to the thread question, I think it's a waste of time this year given the recyclables available. Might be a good chance to grab the best of the youngsters not drafted though, maybe akin to us having pick 1 in the rookie draft if Carlton, Skunks, Dawks and Bombers pick recycled players.
I don't think it was a waste last year.

I think ive mentioned that i would prefer that we pass on the psd but would rather look at all players for a rookie spot. Players like White, Young, McGuinness, Graham, Campbell etc etc. For the most part, i think the psd and the rookie draft is like when you  go to the casino and your down to your last 10er and you stick on the roulette wheel and hope for the best. For my part...because I think we should only draft players who will serve a particular purpose...and from what i read and have seen...I think Bryce Campbell from Norwood could serve a good purpose, I also think Angus Graham should get a chance, and maybe White.

Whoa hang on there, St Kilda traded something like pick 19 and david sierakowski (sp?) for Gehrig, and also traded Pick 4 and Sam Cranage for Hamill i think!

They got Brett Voss in the PSD!

Doh! I put them in the wrong column I've got scribbled down.

You're correct Razor on Gehrig and Hamill. Pick 18 (Daniel Kerr) + Sierakowski for Gehrig.

I'll edit the above post. The Saints ones should be yep Brett Voss and Stephen Powell.

They should scrap the PSD and have FREE AGENCY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Infact, i'd be a lot more happier if we just copied all the nba draft and trading rules and implemented them, expect the lottery, and the soft caps!
