From the AFL website:

The Tigers had a host of positive talking points to come from the impressive 44-point victory over the Blues, the most notable being Ben Lennon, who recorded three goals and 12 marks in his return from an ankle injury.

Axed midfielder Kane Lambert responded in the perfect manner by bagging three first-half goals and accumulating an impressive 37 disposals (16 contested).

Lambert’s exceptional performance should see him earn an immediate recall to the senior team.

Forward Liam McBean proved a handful and booted four goals, while rebounding defender Nathan Broad (17 disposals, one goal) starred across half-back.

Corey Ellis got through his first match in over six weeks unscathed after returning from a groin injury.

Ive said it multiple times and i'll say it again - Id like to see lambert and marcon given a fair go in the guts in the seniors, not plonked on a flank or in a pocket, reckon theyd both surprise

By the way, we are now only a game outside the top 8  :o. We also have a better % than 8th placed Essendon.

8. Essendon    28     98%
9. Box Hill       24   103%
10. Richmond  24   100%
11. Werribee   24     87%
12. Nth Blues  24     75%

3 rounds to go.

VFL Tigers win first road trip for 2016

richmondfc.com.au
8 August 2016

Kane Lambert was a whisker away from suiting up against Collingwood on Friday night and the early preparation worked wonders in the VFL Tigers clinical 44-point win over Northern Blues.

In an expected first half shootout, which yielded 20 goals collectively, Lambert helped himself to three majors — his third was a stunner.

Friday night’s emergency swooped on a loose ball, and while tracing the boundary line, snapped truly on his left which capped off an eye-catching first-half showcase.

Lambert’s goal in the shadows of half-time handed Richmond a three-point lead, which the Tigers never relinquished as they stifled the Blues to win 19.11 (125) to 13.3 (81).

The Tigers impressively restricted the Blues to just 36 inside 50s in total and banged the ball inside their attacking 50 on 61 occasions.

The first half was played at breakneck speed, as both sides put defending on the backburner.

The opening term alone saw both sides kick six goals apiece with momentum swinging like a pendulum.

Tiger-tall Todd Elton got his day off on the right foot by exuding some early aerial dominance inside his side’s attacking 50, and importantly kicked truly.

The Blues hit back swiftly with back-to-back majors before the returning Ben Lennon answered for the Tigers with class.

Lennon gathered on the paint of the 50-metre arc, dissected a duo of Blues defenders, steadied and slotted his first goal of the day, handing the visitors back the lead.

Tiger swingman Callum Moore should be handed the goal assist on the stats sheet, after chasing down an unsuspecting Blue, which led to Lennon’s major.

Moore’s tackle epitomised Richmond’s relentless and ruthless pressure throughout, be it applied or perceived, which ultimately thwarted and stifled the Blues’ manic, run-and-gun style.

In a theme for the first half, the Blues hit back instantly, as both sides traded goals up to quarter time.

Tiger goals came via Tom Couch, Jake Aarts, Nathan Broad and Lambert as the latter rubbed salt into the hosts’ wound.

Lambert, a former Blue, returned to his old haunt and performed with aplomb, finishing with 37 disposals and three goals in a best-on-ground display.

His goal handed the Tigers a slender two-point lead at the first break as both sides welcomed to the quarter-time siren like boxers battling for the round-one bell.

The Tigers and Blues went to their respective corners, or huddles, and took a much needed breather as Craig McRae installed some calm after a frenetic opening.

How the first term unfolded came as little surprise to McRae, as Richmond’s VFL and Development Coach ensured that if the Tigers maintained their manic pressure, then the Blues would yield.

The second term played out much like the first, as Blues’ key-forward Liam Jones stamped his authority on the game.

Jones nailed a second-term double and was looking ominous, before Lambert and the Tigers diverted the narrative.

Lambert goaled soon after Jones’ first, as the Blues’ hit back instantly with a pair of majors, before Connor Menadue, debutant James Cousins, and Lambert again, grasped back the momentum.

The game was hanging by a thread at half-time, and was set-up for an enthralling second half.

Impressively, Richmond slammed on nine goals to three post half-time as the Blues had little answer for the methodical style of the Tigers.

Budding Tiger tall Liam McBean showcased his nous and forward craft with four second-half majors, in a performance that would have done his AFL aspirations little harm.

McBean kicked a third-quarter double, with the second a superb right foot snap from the boundary.

Lennon also bagged a third-term major, while Mabior Chol capped off the quarter in grand style.

Chol dragged down a towering mark on the stroke of three-quarter time, and kicked the Tigers to a 24-point lead heading into the final term.

McRae reiterated at the final change that “strong defence gets the game done” and the Tigers agreed.

McBean kickstarted the quarter, before skipper Sam Darley made the most of a rare foray forward, finishing with class from the 50-metre arc.

Goals to McBean, Butler and Lennon put the icing on the cake and capped off a clinical and convincing win for the Tigers, displaying once again their evolving maturity and belief.

Lennon will push for a late season call-up at AFL level as he finished with 23 disposals, 12 marks and three goals.

Richmond VFL-listed players Jacob Ballard (27 disposals) and Aarts (23 disposals and one goal) were solid across four quarters, as were Tiger cubs Connor Menadue (23 disposals and a goal) and Jason Castagna (22 disposals).

Corey Ellis returned from 10 weeks on the sidelines and importantly got through unscathed and showed flashes of silky brilliance.

Richmond hosts Geelong next Sunday, August 14 at 5pm in a curtain-closer at Punt Road Oval.

Richmond VFL and development coach Craig McRae's summary:

AFL-listed

Kane Lambert

37 disposals, three goals, five clearances, seven marks

Returned from playing AFL footy and showed all his class. He had 37 disposals, including 16 contested (possessions), kicked three goals, along with five clearances. It was an outstanding performance — he really played above the level. He was instrumental in the result.

Ben Lennon

23 disposals, three goals, 12 marks

Returned from injury and we were pleased to see him get a full game under his belt. He’s had a lack of continuity in his footy this year. Taking 12 marks for a medium size is a great achievement. He also ended up with three goals himself.

Connor Menadue

23 disposals, six marks, one goal, five clearances

Played mainly wing and inside (mid) and showed some great class and finished with a goal in the second quarter. He had a good balance of inside and outside and was an important player for us.

Jason Castagna

22 disposals, four clearances, five tackles

Played midfield, forward and back and showed his versatility which is important at this level to learn that. His pressure around the contest early was really important for us.

Jacob Townsend

20 disposals, eight tackles, four clearances

Played as an inside mid and had a job on Wilson (Tom) who’s been important for the Blues this year with six best-on-grounds for the season. It was an important challenge and Jacob contributed with eight tackles, which is what we really expect from him.

Dan Butler

18 disposals, seven marks, one goal

Showed his consistency of effort has really spiked in the last four weeks. He had 18 disposals as a small forward and it was great for our small forwards to have a big impact on the game. He kicked one goal and gave off a couple of others. He didn’t register a tackle but his pressure around the contest was really high.

Nathan Broad

16 disposals, seven marks, one goal

He’s in great form. His last two weeks have been really, really strong and he’s pushing hard for AFL selection. He’s winning his one-on-ones in the air and on the ground.

Todd Elton

15 disposals, eight marks, one goal

Again another who’s playing his best footy for the year. His eight marks really standout, with most of those contested. He kicked 1.4, so he could have had a really big day out, but he’s certainly showing all of his strengths.

Corey Ellis

13 disposals, three clearances, four tackles

Returned after a 10-week absence. He only played three quarters of the game and it was really pleasing to see him get through. Another who showed class around the contest.

Liam McBean

Four goals, 13 disposals, eight marks

Had a big second half — kicked four goals, but it was his leading at the ball that stood-out. He took eight marks. He was on the end of a lot of chains (of possession) due to his hard running.

Callum Moore

11 disposals, three marks, two tackles

Same story, he lost a lot of one-on-ones early as a key-back after playing forward for most of the season. He got better as the game wore on.

Mabior Chol

Nine disposals, six contested possessions, two clearances

Had a really slow start. Him, Ryan (Gale) and Callum (Moore) were all beaten which was a reason why the scores were 10 goals apiece at half time. In the second half he went into the ruck and went forward and contributed a solid performance after half-time.

Ivan Soldo

27 hit-outs, seven disposals, two clearances

With Ivan Maric out he had to step-up and take the ruck duties and he did a great job up against Cam Wood and beat him in parts of the day. His aerial contest was a strength.

VFL-listed

Jacob Ballard

27 disposals, seven marks, six clearances

Continued his impressive form. His last quarters have been phenomenal really. His last three or four games have been outstanding. He had 27 disposals — 10 (disposals) in the last quarter again, that’s three weeks in-a-row. He’s been playing really well for us.

Jake Aarts

23 disposals, seven marks, seven tackles, one goal

As a forward he had 23 disposals, which again is a high number and he’s really playing great footy for us. He’s playing good roles, impacting the scoreboard and laid seven tackles. It was a standout game from a small-forward.

Tom Silvestro

21 disposals, six marks, five inside 50s

Had his most possessions for the year. A hard runner and an elite runner. He plays wing and gets up and back to defend. It was a great day for him.

Sam Darley

17 disposals, one goal, five marks

Led from the front. Strong rebound as we expect from him. His handball receives (eight) were really high, which is important in his game.

Nick Mellington

15 disposals, six marks, four tackles

Playing some good footy himself and playing multiple roles. He’s really running hard, his GPS (numbers) are really high at the moment. He’s an important role player for us.

James Cousins

11 disposals, one goal, four marks, four tackles

He was our 23rd player and it was his first game for us. He really looked capable of playing at the level.

Ryan Gale

11 disposals, five marks, eight uncontested possessions

His first half was pretty poor from our key-backs, he lost a few contests and Liam Jones was playing really well. As we got our balance right in the second half he began going for his marks and defended better.

Ash Morris

11 disposals, three tackles, five handball receives

An important role player — shut down the small forwards. He was really important on the day with his contribution and he’s really starting to look rock solid in the back six.

Dan Coffield

10 disposals, two clearances, two tackles

Played one of his better games. He was as strong in his one-on-one contests than anyone in our backline. He rarely got beaten and was involved in our ball movement too.

Tom Couch

One goal, six disposals

Unfortunately injured himself in the second quarter.
