Maybe that's the thing. Maybe he didn't even try to understand the game plan and just went out and played pure footy with a clear head....

In the end we are making a simple game too complex for the players....
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

Hopefully Hardwick took note. It does my head in when all our forwards are defending in our defensive half giving the opposition backs 50m of space to organise their assault downfield. It means that we can't score on the rebound very easily. It's just so obvious at the ground, it's not funny.

Wasn't it you that said that you couldn't do that in today's footy when referring about comments on Jack staying at home more?
Agree that we are trying to make this game harder than it is. We need a new game plan for 2017 and I hope Dimma realises it or we will lose another year.

Yes it was me
Only telling you what they are doing at AFL level and playing the game in a 60 metre bubble
Don't agree with it either

You seemed to agree on it at the time...
When you have someone of Jacks talents you have to use them. And playing him up on the wings doesn't help us. He needs to be play inside 50 at all times including when other side push up on us.
We need to score more and the easiest way to do that is play your best forward close to goal and isolate him as much as possible. Stuff what other sides do!

  • All up inside ya.
I had to leave at half time and TBH it was hard to see all of the play from my vantage point, but here is what I noticed in the first half:
Chol still gets pushed off the ball easily in marking contests but he is super agile and has good skills. Definitely an exciting prospect. Just needs some bulk.
Drummond had a good half - quick and clean
Bean worked hard and marked strongly but missed some set shots.
Ty worked pretty hard and nailed his shots.
Lennon looked alright and kicked a classy goal.
C Ellis mixed bad with good. Looks good in traffic but dropped a sitter in the center square that nearly cost a goal. Still looks like a boy.
Castagna was fumbly and so was Broad.
Townsend: didn't really notice but maybe I missed some of his work in close.
Miles ditto.
Conca laid a few good tackles and did some good things in traffic. He did muff one kick inside 50 that probs should have been a goal. I thought he was pretty good in the first half though.
Ivy solid in the ruck.
That young indigenous dude Kirby looked very dangrous and chased hard.  Be interesting to see where he goes at year's end. Would love for us to pick him up. All class.

Here's an article and pic of Kirby.

Kirby's coming home
Australian Community Media - Fairfax Media

FORMER Tyntynder footballer Kayle Kirby is positive he can overcome a strained hip and return to his old home ground when the Bendigo Pioneers host a TAC Cup match at Alan Garden Reserve this weekend.

Kirby needs to pass a fitness test tomorrow to make the side to play the Calder Cannons, but he was confident he'd make the cut to play on his former club's stomping ground on Sunday.

"Yeah, I'll be playing," he said.

"It'll be great, I can't wait. It'll be a good pitch and it'll be good to play in front of everyone again."

Kirby strained his hip flexor a fortnight ago during the Pioneers' round 10 clash against the Murray Bushrangers.

The injury caused the ex-Bulldog to be ineligible for Victoria Country in its NAB AFL Under 18 Championships match against South Australia at Etihad Stadium last Friday.

The full forward said he was devastated about the missed opportunity.

"It was a bit unfortunate because I was supposed to play in the Friday game," Kirby said.

"If I played a good game then, I would've been a chance to play the next one, which would've been a really good game at Geelong."

However, Kirby's focus now was to be fit and ready for Sunday.

Pioneers coach Brett Henderson said Kirby was one of four local players in strong contention to play against the Cannons.

"Kayle's just fantastic to watch when he's up and about so hopefully he can get out there on Sunday and really take the game on," Henderson said.

Midfielder Anthony Miles responded in the best way possible after being axed from the Tigers' squad, picking up a team-high 28 touches in the nine-point win.

Richmond VFL operations manager Daniel Hull told AFL.com.au Miles was a solid performer and "won his fair share of contested possessions".

Midfielder Reece Conca (22 touches, two goals) was also a notable standout courtesy of his ability to alternate between midfield and half-back during the match.

Omitted restricted free agent Ty Vickery presented well and booted two goals, while Mabior Chol continued his promising patch of form in the backline.

Don't know who picked the best but Kirby was clearly BOG
Think he actually kicked 3 points as well so could of ended up with 8 goals
Maric played very well
As did Butler

Kayle Kirby ignites VFL Tigers

richmondfc.com.au
22 August 2016

It isn’t too often that a VFL coach isolates their 23rd player inside 50 with their season hanging in the balance.

However, that’s exactly what Craig McRae did with youngster Kayle Kirby in the tense final term of Richmond’s nine-point win over Sandringham.

Kirby’s game-high, five-goal haul sparked the Tigers and led them to a meritorious win over the formerly fourth-placed Zebras, finishing 14.14 (98) to 12.17 (89).

As the rain set in at Trevor Barker Oval, and with the game slipping from their grasp, the Tigers turned to the Bendigo Pioneers dynamo, who ignited his side with a trio of third-term majors.

It was fitting that the sole goalkicker in the see-sawing final term was Kirby.

As the Zebras peppered the goals in the last quarter, they could only scrounge together seven behinds, as Kirby’s moment arrived.

With the ball dribbling over the line deep in Richmond’s attacking 50, Dan Butler’s quick thinking soccer kept the ball alive and Kirby found himself in the right place at the right time.

Kirby tracked the ball back with the flight, dropped the mark, but gathered the ball at ground level, sprung to his feet, and with a shrug of the hips, saw off a would-be-tackler and snapped truly.

Richmond kept its season alive as it pressured, scrapped, willed and clawed its way back from a 21-point deficit midway through the third quarter.

As the rain moved from a nagging shower to a soaking downpour, the Tigers made their move.

With the Zebras looking dominant, Kirby pounced on a loose ball inside-50 and kicked the first of a three-goal burst in the third term.

Reece Conca slotted his first of the third term moments later, before Kirby crumbed and goaled to tie things up at 70 points apiece.

Kirby’s soccer attempt was barely touched on the goalline and handed Richmond a slender one-point lead — which it wouldn’t relinquish for the remainder of the game.

Next, Conca weaved his way through congestion and snapped his second major for the term, with Liam McBean slotting his sole major moments later.

Kirby completed the final leg of his third quarter trifecta by snapping his fourth of the game — pushing the Tigers lead to 19 points.

The Tigers turned the 21-point deficit into a 19-point lead in the blink of an eye, before Sandringham made a late surge in the shadows of three-quarter time.

The Zebras slotted back-to-back goals and sliced the margin to eight points heading into the critical final term.

The final term was a battle of wills and territory.

Sandy peppered the goals and the Tigers struggled to hit targets going inside 50.

Kirby snatched his moment and found himself kicking the final two goals of the game to keep Richmond’s slim finals hopes alive.

The game started at breakneck speed as the Zebras got off to a flyer with the opening two goals.

Sandy looked sharp and the Tigers needed a kickstart — in stepped Butler.

The zippy and tenacious small forward gobbled up a defensive 50 turnover from the Zebras and coolly opened Richmond’s account.

Richmond slotted the next three majors through Kirby, Ty Vickery and Nathan Drummond before a late spoil by Ryan Gale handed Sandy the easiest of goals.

Sandy went on to kick back-to-back goals and snatched a three-point lead.

Soon after, Vickery cashed in on a 50-metre penalty and helped himself to a pair of opening term majors.

Lennon highlighted his class with a right-foot snap on goal with the quarter-time siren beckoning, which handed the Tigers a seven-point lead at the first change.

The Tigers could only managed a solitary goal in the second term and it came via Ivan Maric as Sandringham upped the pressure with four goals of their own.

The Tigers trailed by 15 points at the main break before Kirby’s second-half heroics netted them a nine-point win, their fifth-win-on-the-trot and eighth for the year.

Tenacious on-baller Anthony Miles put up his hand for reinstatement to AFL duties with a team-high 29 disposals, while Conca racked up 21 disposals and slotted two goals.

Next week the equation is simple - if Richmond beats Coburg and Essendon loses to the Northern Blues then the VFL Tigers will feature in finals action.

They welcome Coburg to Punt Road Oval next Saturday, August 27 at 12pm.
