Some of us disputed his (chaplins) credentials including:-

1) lack of coaching experience
2) lack of qualifications
3) lack of mental conditioning
4) lack of physical conditioning
5) lack of good structures in a potential role (player dev)
6) and that he was a crap player.

A number of posters focused on crap player does not equal crap coach rhetoric in the context of Chaplin being a crap player and going for the job.

Which is as far as context is concerned, somewhat of a defence (or at least indifference) of Chaplin for the job.

Regarding your 6 points, how does one start a career as a coach?

Lack of experience is overcome by....coaching?

Lack of qualification - 200 games as a player strikes me as decent qualification. Most assistant coaches these days start an apprenticeship type situation where they are coaching and studying at the same time.

Lack of mental conditioning - well playing for/being associated with the RFC puts any perspective well behind the eight-ball. Can't deny that

Lack of Physical conditioning? - what the stuff is that for a coaching parameter. He's just come off playing full time as an athlete. How much more conditioning could a candidate possibly need?

We have already clearly established being a crap player has little relevance regarding ones capabilities as a potential coach



I'm indifferent at the idea of Chaplin coaching next year. But our best defender for the last 30 years was brought to tears when Chaplin retired.

He wasn't even that bad of a player, average yes, bad no.

secondly, youll hardly notice him when he is an assistant..its not as though he is our next senior coach.

all footballers have fool momments, doesn't mean they are bad players.  How many Alex Rance moments have we seen over the years (just to clarify I am NOT comparing chaplin to Rance)

Besides, its Nahas, anyone would have got complacent.

Our forward line functioned better with Chappy in the team, Rance as a general rule played better with Chappy compared to with Astbury (though as Astbury got more games they got better together).

Becuae the bloke making the final decision  (Balme) has been at 2 clubs in the last decade, has worked with some quality coaches, especially in the development area so I reckon he's got a better idea than we do

Collingwood is moving to snatch sacked Brisbane coach Justin Leppitsch out from under Richmond, as the Tigers try to get their former assistant back to Punt Road.

Leppitsch was close to confirming he would re-join Damien Hardwick’s team but the Pies have thrown a spanner in the works, offering a part-time assistant’s job in conjunction with a position at the AFL Academy.

The dual roles would lower the pressure levels on ‘Leppa’, who wants to stay in the game but also intends to avoid the limelight as much as possible.

The challenge is going to be a measure of the regenerated Tigers commitment to improve their football department.

When Leppitsch was its defensive coach, the Richmond backline became one of the tightest in the competition, and Alex Rance changed from a gung-ho turnover merchant to the best defender in the game. 

Getting Leppa back would be a big win for the Tigers, but losing him to the Magpies would be a very early stumble on the road back to respectability.

It sounds to me he needs a break anyway. We need coaches that are 100% committed to the RFC.
