Hiya all.

I usually post on Y&B and am a long time reader first time poster.

MT, thanks for all your training reports.  I don't know where you find the time but they are always a pleasure to read.

From what you saw today, will any of the emergencies or Tiv or Bowden come into the line up for Whitey or anyone else?
Welcome to OER Con65 and thanks for the kind words :)

From what I saw today we will be unchanged for tomorrow night. Everyone named in the squad including Whitey trained fully and got through.

Training today was at an overcast Punt Rd Oval. Training started around 10am and went for around an hour and a half. Most of the squad were present from what I saw. The only ones absent were Richo who is training with the Dream Team squad today at the 'G while I didn't see Morton and Kingy out there but may have missed them.

In the rehab group were Howat, with his right calf bandaged, who spent a while just running laps along the boundary. Rainesy had a bit of a kick-to-kick with one of the fitness blokes. He's got a bandage on his knee. Moore did some 100m runs on the far side of the ground as did Gus. Foley and Simmo just did some reflex drills for half and hour as they'll be training with Victoria this week.

The session itself was more like a preseason one in terms of the drills they did. First the squad split into 2 groups with one group getting into 3 small circles of about 6 with 2 players in the middle battling for handballs from those on the rim of the circle. Each clean handball receive and give off was given a point. Joel was trailing Polo 3-6 but Joel took the last 4 points and David King gave him a pat on the head. Cotchin was up against Gourdis and made this drill look so easy. While others were over each other wrestling for front position, Cotch was just too nimble and strong in the hips and had plenty of time to receive and then give off. While that was going on, the second group were working on linking up via hand. Running up to Royal in a line of 6 and then competing 3 attackers vs 3 defenders on the way back. After 15 minutes the 2 groups swapped over. Blingers hurt his ankle halfway through it in a tackle and had to head into the rooms for treatment but he returned 10 minutes and completed training.

The next drill focussed on clearing from a stoppage and entering the forward 50 and goaling. 6 vs 6 mini teams with the attackers linking up via handball and then passing to someone inside 50 who in turn would dish off by hand to someone running past and goaling. A few basic skill errors and missed targets to remind us of Saturday night  :P. Cass walked off and went into the rooms midway through but I'm not sure what is wrong. Hopefully he hasn't copped another injury  :-\.

They then finished off with some goalkicking across the body. David Kingy was getting a group near him to do it with someone on their tail. Joel, McGuane, Connors, Edwards, Jack, Gourdis, Thursty, Newy, Blingers, Cotchin, Jordie, Patto, JON, Silvester and Cartledge stayed out longer to work on set shots and let go of torp after torp. Jack tried about 3 times going the torp and none of them connected properly so I can see why he went the drop punt. In fact most of the boys couldn't get the torp to go straight. One off-target torp just missed by a whisker a very expensive silver car parked to the side of the goals. Some very relieved faces  :lol

Any question just fire away.

MT how did Polak train?  Was his ommission from the StK game due to injury or just strategic matchups?

Also does Cotchin look like he is ready for his senior debut against Geelong or more likely the following week?

I didn't notice Polly too much to be honest. What I saw him do was solid and clean but nothing noteworthy or outstanding. I have no idea why he dropped out before the game as he looked to be moving fine today. In that case it could've been strategic with us wanting an extra runner at the Dome but that's just a guess and I wouldn't know any more than your good self Con.

Skill wise Cotch is definitely ready (during the goalkicking with an opponent on his tail he was strong enough in the hips to hold his balance in the tackle and free up his leg enough to chip kick over someone in front of him for a goal  :clapping). However with no preseason he's obviously going to have to be patient and build up his match fitness more at Coburg. He's keen to play that's for sure.

Great report as always MT. You do sound excited about Trent. :thumbsup

Casserly can't take a trick. Hard to believe he's yet to play a senior game yet..

Thanks MT much appreciated.

I agree Polly out sounds like it was strategic to have more pace than the Saints.  Esp as the Saints dropped Blake and were one taller player down.

Cogs looks to be moving confidently as far as the knee goes (touchwood). I guess the next test is whether he can adjust to the extra pace of the game now (he probably won't have to face that issue yet in the VFL given his footy smarts) and also whether his body can hold up given the amount of footy he's missed (ie. not copping anymore soft tissue injuries like hammies). He's only just got back into full training so he's going to be rusty and needed to be rotated on and off the bench until he gains some match fitness.

Training report - Wednesday 14th May

Training today was at a sunny Punt Rd Oval and roughly went for 2 hours. A Geelong spy was watching as he was jotting down things on a piece of paper. Everyone except Hughes were present. Simmo, Richo and Foley were only given light duties after playing in the hall of fame game. Simmo had a stretch bandage around his knee but he was moving fine. Richo and Axel only joined in full training in the last 30 mins. Likewise Kingy with his wrist only joined in towards the end. He was marking the ball okay so he may play this week. Sugar also didn't train. He was out early on then went inside. Rainesy and Cass were popping in and out of the rooms.

As far as actual training went, it was very much match-based.

They had a mini scratch match for starters. Fairly physical too for training and the way they set up at stoppages with huge numbers around the ball seemed to be a deliberate ploy to get them to work on being hard at the footy and the man with the footy as well as work on skills in tight spaces. A Edwards (high-ish) tackle on Petts was no training drill lol. They were all wearing different numbers to what they usually wear so at times it was difficult to pick up who was who but most impressive were Blingers' run through the middle, Sarge's defensive work (spoils, smothers and footskills rebounding out of defence) and Jack leading and presenting from CHF and up to the wing. Reckon he had half a dozen marks. Putt and Hyde kicked a couple of long goals from a 45 degree angle on the run which received praise from the coaches. Cogs was fine at this stage of training. He feigned about 4 gives in traffic before trying a banana on the boundary which was smothered by Schulz. Browny though left the track after the scratch match and went inside the rooms. He looked okay though.

Next up the group split into two groups of midfielders and about 4 forwards/defenders who went 1-on-1 for a rebounding from defence and hitting a inside 50 target. From memory inside 50 it was Polak vs Gourdis (Dave did well spoiling actually), Morton vs McMahon (Mitch won this duel easily - he was on fire today), Bowden vs Rance and Jack vs Silvester. Each of the two midfield groups would be split into teams of attackers and defenders and the attackers starting in defence needed to get it to one of the forwards inside 50. After each go the trainers had a couple of tackle bags with a ball on top and the midfielders had to run back to the wing and slam into the bags and then get the ball back to a teammate. They repeated this attacking inside 50 drill starting with a stoppage on the wing. Blingers again and Morton stood out.

For the last drill, it was another rebounding from defence one whereby McRae would bomb the ball into the defensive 50 where Richo would knock the ball down or either mark and give off by hand to crumbers who would cut it out to a teammate sitting wide off the pack and then they would all run forward linking up and footpassing to others in space. As well as Richo, Kingy and Foley joined in and Kingy looked fine and didn't seem hampered by his wrist injury.

After the main drills, they finished off in smaller groups doing specialised training. Collard, Rance, Gourdis, Jack, Putt and Cotchin were working on tackling techniques with McRae. Jack also joined Silvester, McGuane and Rawlings for mark on a bag. McGuane once didn't bother with the bag and took a bit of a specky on the back of Rawlings which got a cheer and a laugh. Foley, White, Jacko and Hyde were pairing up with one trying to stop the other from sprinting in on goal. Cartledge and Gus did some ruckwork with Monkhurst. Petts was doing some goalkicking and cracked it once when he missed and swore loudly. A friend said to me he's one frustrated footballer because he can't get back into the side. The rest of the group were on the other side of the ground chatting with Royal I think. And that was it.

As usual, any questions just fire away.
