Fringe Tigers’ star performances prove Richmond, scarily, should only get better

February 20, 2020 1:07pm
Tom Morris
FOX SPORTS

Opposition clubs, beware.

Richmond’s intra-club on Thursday morning at Punt Road went off without a hitch. There were no new injuries and ample reasons for Tigers fans to dream big.

Not that any of this comes as a huge surprise, but there will be plenty of unlucky players at selection before Round 1.

Shai Bolton’s first half was electric, booting two goals and having a hand in several others. He was on the stronger yellow team, which was essentially Damien Hardwick’s best 22.

Bolton took a spectacular mark early and was a constant threat in the front half. “He was exceptional,” assistant coach Justin Leppitsch said post-match.

Teammate Riley Collier-Dawkins, who Hardwick said had put on 7kg over the summer, will be hard to keep out of the senior team. Ditto Sydney Stack, who booted two goals.

One of the shining lights in the weaker team was Oleg Markov, who finished with three majors and presented well all morning.

At half-time, Tom Lynch, Jack Riewoldt, Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin, Bachar Houli and Shane Edwards swapped sides. All six have been selected in the Bushfire Relief match next Friday, which Leppitsch noted will allow the Tigers to give opportunities to half-a-dozen fringe players in the Marsh Community Series.

The change of line-ups meant the yellow side resembled the team Richmond is likely to take into its first Marsh Series match in a couple of weeks.

At three-quarter time, Houli and Cotchin took off their GPS monitors and boots, while the other four big guns played on. Houli had been slightly winded but smiled and took photos with fans before heading into the changing rooms.

The Tigers had a few teething issues early in the match with rotations, which prompted Hardwick to come down from the Jack Dyer Stand – where he was sitting next to assistants Adam Kingsley and Craig McRae – to the bench.

The stronger team began the match with three deep forwards and plenty of space in front of them: Martin, Lynch and Riewoldt. The latter two booted three majors between them, while Martin spent plenty of time on the ball and even in the back half, which is an area he rarely frequented in 2019.

Jack Higgins and Stack were on the ‘weaker’ team, but Leppitsch was impressed by their efforts.

“They performed really well,” the former Brisbane coach said.

“They could easily slot into our group and play regular senior footy this year. Jack was terrific and gets a lot of the ball. More importantly, it’s great to see him back.”

Marlion Pickett defied his light build several times in the clinches and looked every bit the player he was on Grand Final day last September.

There was one particular piece of play which had both benches applauding when Pickett, under serious duress, somehow saw Liam Baker 40 metres inboard and with his non-preferred foot, hit him on the chest.

“He is leaner,” Leppitsch said of Pickett.

“It’s his first AFL pre-season. Even at 27, the improvement you can get by being in the AFL season. He is still blind turning everyone which is good to see.”

Jack Graham played just the first term as he recovers from a shoulder injury. He’s unlikely to play against Collingwood next week but should be available for Round 1.

Nankervis played the first term in the ruck for the weaker black team and got through unscathed. He showed no obvious signs of the adductor injury that significantly impacted his summer. He then did some additional work on the sideline with fitness staff.

Kamdyn McIntosh ran laps pre-match as he recovers from a twisted ankle, while draftee Thomson Dow stayed at home due to illness.

Fox Footy's Tom Morris' twitter commentary of the intra-club:

On deck for Richmond’s intra-club at Punt Road.

Yellow team considerably stronger than the black one. Draftee Thomson Dow is away sick. Kamdyn McIntosh running laps. Jack Graham expected to play limited minutes. Updates to come.

Dusty just had two disposals deep in the back half. Don't see that often. Tom Lynch makes amends after dropping an easy mark and sets up Jason Castagna, who slots it from 30.

1/4 time. Bolton has had four shots on goal. Yellow team up by about 20 points. Riewoldt/Lynch/Dusty as a three-pronged attack is ominous.

Chol's chip pass rolls through for a goal. Jack Ross getting a bit of it now too.

Lynch gets his first immediately after. Set shot from 25.

Bolton is best on ground at the moment. Electric in the front half. Snaps his second goal. Great follow-up work.

Pickett? Yep. Has been good.

Draft pick No.44 Will Martyn slides through traffic and kicks his first. Excellent finish from 40. Then lines up on Dusty at the next centre bounce.
1/2 time at Punt Road.
Ralph Carr in the house watching the game.

Lynch, Riewoldt, Dusty, Cotchin and Houli swapping teams.
Markov, Ross, Collier-Dawkins, Chol, Eggmolesse-Smith and Edwards going back the other way.

Different jumper, same result! Markov snaps truly towards the Bridge Road end.

Pickett does some crazy stuff. Under serious pressure, he somehow saw Baker and snapped with his left inboard to find his target 35 metres away.

Dusty being very vocal. Sick of the overuse of handball, telling his teammates to 'kick it!' with a few other words in there too. Like it.

Riewoldt slots his first and then Collier-Dawkins snags one for the other team. He's following Dusty in the midfield.

Stack gets his second. Goals flowing now. Collier-Dawkins looks seriously good.

Cotchin and Houli have taken their GPS monitors off... They are done for the day. Both are playing next Friday in the charity match.

Where's Stack playing? Forward. He's kicked two.

Who was the best out of the recent draftees? Really like Will Martyn.

Pretty scary stuff at Richmond intra-club today. The selection squeeze is on.

Opposition clubs, beware. Promising intra-club efforts from its youngs guns prove @Richmond_FC, scarily, should get better.

Seven non-flag Tigers pushing for Round 1 selection

Sam Landsberger
Herald Sun
21 Feb 2020

Damien Hardwick overlooking reigning best-and-fairest Dion Prestia in Victoria’s line-up for the State of Origin blockbuster might prove a blessing for the Richmond coach.

That tough conversation is set to become something of a norm at Punt Rd with a bunch of in-form Tigers bracing for Round 1 disappointment.

With just 27 days until the season-opener against Carlton, Richmond boasts a shallow injury list and depth reminiscent of Australia’s Test team 20 years ago.

The likes of Jack Ross, 19, a bulked-up Riley Collier-Dawkins, 20, Noah Balta, 19 and Sydney Stack, 19, are all pressing for selection.

That’s before you get to injured pair Kamdyn McIntosh (ankle) and Jack Graham (shoulder), who should both be ready by the pre-season game against Grand Finalist GWS in Wagga Wagga on March 8.

And then there is Jack Higgins, who played without apprehension — and without a helmet — in Thursday’s intra-club at Punt Rd after his remarkable recovery from intrusive brain surgery.

That’s already seven players striving to break into a premiership team that lost only Brandon Ellis to Gold Coast.

The problem for that seven is that fringe premiership players, such as Shai Bolton and one-gamer Marlion Pickett, are sparkling in the summertime.

Assistant coach Justin Leppitsch said Bolton was “exceptional” after the livewire booted two goals in Thursday’s intra-club.

“We’re a bit unsure (of our best 22) at this point,” Leppitsch said.

“The guys that didn’t play in the Grand Final a lot of them played really well out there today. It’s going to be difficult.

“Noah’s one that’s looking for an opportunity and he played in our best defence today and was probably one of our best players.

“It’s really hard, because you’ve got to fit another player in. He’s made it really difficult for us at the selection table, that’s for sure.

“I’m sure he’ll get an opportunity next week in our first game.”

Pickett is completing his first AFL pre-season at the ripe age of 27, and it’s showing.

“He does look good, he looks sharp. He’s still blind-turning everybody, which is good to see,” Leppitsch said.

Leppitsch said Higgins was “terrific, he gets a lot of the ball and just knows how to find it” after his brave return.

“He and Sydney started in what you’d perceive as the ‘B team’ and both performed really well. They could easily slot into our group and play regular senior footy for us this year.”

Leppitsch said Stack was “a real weapon” given his ability to play all over the ground.

In the early rounds of last season the Tigers were fielding line-ups swamped with VFL names, but the accelerated development that gave the lesser-lights is paying dividends.

Tiger hopefuls show the hunger to break into Richmond team

Michael Gleeson
The Age
21 Feb 2020

Some of the most eye-catching players in Richmond’s first intra-club match of the year didn’t play in last year's premiership.

Desperate to break into the reigning premiership side, Sydney Stack, Noah Balta, Jack Higgins, Riley Collier-Dawkins and Mabior Chol were the ones who worked harder and did more to present themselves than most.
Noah Balta.

The surfeit of Richmond small forwards has the pressure elevated for places in the team. Stack, who could play anywhere on the ground, was clean and clever, and Daniel Rioli took the best mark of the day.

Balta shifted to defence late last season and has trained there over the summer. He was as impressive as anyone on the field.

But it was Shai Bolton who caught the eye more than any other player on Punt Road Oval on Thursday morning. That is, any player other than Dustin Martin, who always demands the ball and your attention.

Bolton was electric in the first half. He kicked the first goal in the opening 30 seconds of the match that pitted the nominal best Richmond 22 against the hopefuls. Bolton was in the best 22. He will stay there.

“The guys who didn’t play in the grand final, a lot of them played really well. Noah was one who is looking for an opportunity, he played in our best defence today and was one of our best players,” assistant coach Justin Leppitsch said.

“Consistent players like Jack Ross, Riley Collier-Dawkins, Sydney Stack, they all played really well and Shai Bolton was exceptional as well.

“It’s a real challenge for us how you fit them in, how many mids, how many forwards. It is going to be difficult for us at the moment.”

Collier-Dawkins, playing on the ball or out on a wing, will force his way into the team.

Marlion Pickett’s stunning debut in the grand final appears only to have intensified his motivation. He has returned fitter and leaner – not that there was a lot of him last year – but he is sharp.

“Yeah, he is leaner,” Leppitsch said. “It’s his first AFL pre-season. Even at 27 years of age the improvement you can get just by being in an AFL system … he does look good, he looks sharp, still blind-turning everyone which was good to see.”

Toby Nankervis coming back from injury played in the B team for a quarter then ran laps. He is very good when out there but it still leaves the most vexing of selection questions unanswered - who plays in the ruck?

Ivan Soldo started up forward but was good when moved into the ruck, Chol was excellent around the ground. And Callum Coleman-Jones did some good things.

"We still talk about it every day, who is our best ruckman and best ruck combination?" Leppitsch said. "It's going to be a real challenge."

Bachar Houli sat out the last quarter after being heavily brought to ground in the third quarter and got up winded and rubbing his shoulder.

Mark Stevens on Ch 7 news said today's training session at Punt Rd was a tough one. Like a first day of preseason with repeat sprints and time trials. Players bent over and gasping for air. He also said we looked in really good shape.
